La Négation (Negation in French)

To make a sentence negative in French–as in, you don’t like something, or she doesn’t do something–the structure ne…pas must be placed around the first conjugated verb, even if there are two verbs in the sentence. This also applies to the passé composé; ne…pas is placed on either side of the auxiliary verb.

Il n’aime pas de fruits de mer.
Elle ne regarde pas la télévision.
Nous n’allons pas voyager au Canada cet été.
Je n’ai pas vu ce film-là.

For inverted questions, ne…pas is placed around both the verb and the subject.

Ne veux-tu pas manger ce gâteau?
N’a-t-il pas rendu visite à ses grand-parents pendant Noël?
Ne voulez-vous pas m’accompagner au restaurant la semaine prochaine?

To negate an infinitive, ne pas is kept together and placed in front of the non-conjugated verb that it negates.

Je t’ai dit de ne pas regarder la télé.
Il espère ne pas devoir repasser l’examen.
When a partitive article or indefinite article is negated, the article becomes simply de.
Avez-vous un crayon? Non, je n’ai pas de crayon.
Voulez-vous du fromage? Non, je ne veux pas de fromage.

Ne…pas can often be combined with an adverb to create a more specific negative expression.

ne…pas du tout	asla
ne…pas encore	henüz değil
ne…pas non plus	hiçbiri
ne…pas toujours	her zaman değil

Je n’aime pas du tout le film.
Tu n’as pas encore mangé.
Elle ne va pas non plus.
Vous n’avez pas toujours raison!

The phrase ne...que can be misleading, because it while it appears negative, it actually means only, rather than not only. Ne…que can also be placed around more than one verb at a time.

Nous n’avons mangé que trois pizzas.	Sadece üç pizza yedik.
Elle n’a qu’une soeur.	Sadece bir kız kardeşi var.
Je ne vais voir que deux de mes frères.	Sadece iki kardeşimi görmeye gidiyorum.
