Subjunctive

독일어의 가정법은 영어보다 오히려 더 자주 사용됩니다. 가장 흔히, 그것은 누군가가 무엇을 하려고(would) 하는지를 표현할 때 사용됩니다.

이번에서 would의 영어 사용처럼 동사 활용형을 사용할 때 가장 단순한 형태를살펴볼 것입니다. 부정사를 추가하기만 하면 됩니다.

All you need to memorize is the subjunctive conjugation of one single verb: werden. Here it is:

ich würde	I would
du würdest	you would
er/sie/es würde	he/she/it would
wir würden	we would
ihr würdet	you (pl.) would
Sie/sie würden	they/you (formal) would

Easier in English, admittedly, but once you get these down, simply add the infinitive.

Das würde ich nicht tun.
I wouldn’t do that.

Would very often goes together with if. And for that, you’re going to need a new tense of every verb. Still, it’s not so bad to make.

In most cases, you can simply take a verb’s preterite form and add an umlaut. Take haben and können for example, probably the most common regular subjunctive verbs.

haben - hatte - hätte
können - konnte - könnte

Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich auch gehen.
If I had more time, I would go too.

Wenn er ein Flugzeug hätte, würde er fliegen.
If he had an airplane, he would fly.

The most common irregular verb is werden:

Wenn ich ein Chef wäre, würde ich mehr Macht haben
If I were a boss, I would have more power.
