Belirli ve Belirsiz Tanım Edatları

Tanım edatları cümlede sıfatlar gibi işlev görür. İngilizce'de üç tanım edatı bulunmaktadır: "a", "an" ve "the". "A" ve "an" belirsiz tanım edatları olarak ve "the" ise belirli tanım edatı olarak bilinir.

Belirli tanım edatı

Belirli tanım edatı "the" özne benzersiz ve spesifik olduğunda veya daha önce bahsedildiğinde kullanılır.

Belirli tanım edatını aşağıdaki durumlarda da kullanırız:

• Ünlü yapılardan önce

• Aile isimlerinden önce

• İsimlerinde "cumhuriyet", "krallık", veya "devlet" kelimeleri geçen ülkelerden önce

• Çoğul isimlere sahip ülkelerden önce

• On yıllardan önce

• Coğrafi bölgelerden önce

• En üstünlük ve sıralı sayılardan önce

Örnekler:

The Andersons are coming over for dinner on the weekend.

Belirsiz Tanım Edatları

Belirsiz tanım edatları "a" ve "an" ilk kez karşılaşılan şeylerden ve bir sınıfın ya da grubun belirli üyelerinden bahsederken kullanılır. Ardından gelen kelime sessiz harfle başlıyorsa "a" ve sesli harfle başlıyorsa "an" kullanın.

Belirsiz tanım edatlarını aşağıdaki durumlarda da kullanırız:

• Bir şey var

• Meslek isimleri

• Milliyetler

• Dinler

• Bir şeyin örneği

• "Ne" ve "gibi" kelimelerinden sonra

Örnekler:

There is a rat in the basement!

A police officer knocked at my door last night.

She married a Japanese man and moved to Japan.

He goes to synagogue because he is a Jew.

My mother has a large collection of vintage postcards.
