Portuguese words only have one stressed syllable per word.

ENGLISH WORDS ENDING IN
‘-e’‘-o’‘-a’Are usually stressed on the penultimate (second-to-last) syllable
‘-s’‘-m’‘-ns’
‘-i’‘-u’Are stressed at the last syllable
‘-i’ or ‘-u’followed by:‘-m’ or ‘-s’
Any diphthong (or a diphthong followed by ‘-s’)
Regular verbs endings ‘-ar’, ‘-er’, ‘-ir’ at infinitive
GRAPHIC ACCENTUATION
ACUTE ACCENTA written accent marks the syllable that is stressed
CIRCUMFLEX ACCENT
