Pronunciation

Punctuation and Intonation - Σημεία Στίξης και Τονισμός

The Greek language uses very similar punctuation to English, with only a few differences.

The semicolon (;) is the Greek equivalent of the English question mark (?). There is no “?” symbol in Greek. In the place a semicolon would normally go in English, the Greek language uses the upper dot (·).

Greek quotation marks can look like this (“...”) or this (<<...>>).

There’s also the umlaut (¨) that is used over vowel clusters and changes the way the vowels are pronounced.

Lastly, there’s stress (‘) on all words with more than one syllable. The stress shows what vowel of the word should be pronounced with more effort.
