Ford fissò Arthur, che cominciò a pensare che, dopotutto, non era una cattiva idea quella di andare al pub.

«Ma, e la mia casa...?» si lagnò.

Ford diede un'occhiata al signor Prosser, e a un tratto gli venne un'idea diabolica.

«Vuole buttarti giù la casa?»

«Sì, perché vogliono costruire...»

«E non riesce a farlo perché tu stai sdraiato davanti al bulldozer?»

«Sì, e...»

«Sono sicuro che riusciremo ad arrivare a un accordo» disse Ford. «Mi scusi!» urlò rivolto a Prosser.

Il signor Prosser (che stava dibattendo con un portavoce dei conducenti di bulldozer la questione se Arthur Dent costituisse o meno un pericolo per la salute mentale, e a quanto sarebbe ammontato in caso affermativo il risarcimento dovuto) si guardò intorno. Fu con sorpresa, e anche con un po' di paura, che si accorse che Arthur aveva compagnia.

«Sì? Buongiorno!» gridò. «Allora, è rinsavito il nostro signor Dent?»

«Supponiamo che non lo sia affatto» gridò Ford.

«Ebbene?» sospirò il signor Prosser.

«E supponiamo anche che abbia intenzione di restare qui tutto il giorno...»

«E allora?»

«E allora tutti i vostri operai devono restare qui tutto il giorno senza fare niente?»

«Eh, può essere, sì...»

«Se è già rassegnato a tutto questo, non ha realmente bisogno che lui se ne stia sdraiato nel fango tutto il tempo, no?»

«Cosa?»

«Non ha realmente bisogno che lui stia qui» ripeté Ford, paziente. Il signor Prosser rifletté sulla cosa.

«Be', no, non è esattamente un bisogno...»

Prosser era preoccupato. Gli sembrava che uno dei due stesse dicendo cose senza senso.

Ford aggiunse: «Dunque se lei fosse disposto a dare per scontato che lui sia realmente qui, noi potremmo andarcene al pub per una mezz'oretta. Che ne dice?».

Il signor Prosser pensò che gli sembrava assolutamente folle.

«Mi pare assolutamente ragionevole...» disse, con un tono di voce rassicurante. Si chiese chi stesse cercando di rassicurare.

«E se vuole fare un salto al pub anche lei, dopo» propose Ford «possiamo sempre coprirla noi.»

«Allora» disse Ford Prefect «se non le spiace, vuole venire a sdraiarsi qui?»

«Cosa?» domandò il signor Prosser.

«Ah, mi scusi,» fece Ford «forse non mi sono spiegato molto bene. Qualcuno deve pur stare sdraiato davanti ai bulldozer, no? Sennò nessuno gli impedirebbe di avanzare per demolire la casa del signor Dent.»

«Cosa?» ripeté il signor Prosser.

«È semplicissimo» disse Ford. «Il mio cliente, il signor Dent, dice che smetterà di stare sdraiato qui nel fango solo a patto che lei prenda il suo posto.»

«Ma cosa stai dicendo?» disse Arthur, però Ford gli diede un colpetto col piede per fargli capire di star zitto.

«Vuole che io vada a sdraiarmi là...» disse Prosser, cercando di decifrare quel nuovo, inaspettato messaggio.

«Sì.»

«Davanti al bulldozer?»

«Sì.»

«Al posto del signor Dent?»

«Sì.»

«Nel fango?»

«Sì, nel, come dice lei, fango.»

Appena il signor Prosser si rese conto che il perdente era in sostanza proprio lui, fu come se un peso gli fosse stato tolto dalle spalle: la situazione adesso gli riusciva più familiare. Sospirò.

«E se io mi sdraio lì lei porterà il signor Dent al pub?»

«Esatto» confermò Ford. «Proprio così.»

Il signor Prosser fece qualche nervoso passo avanti, poi si fermò.

«Me lo promette?» domandò.

«Promesso» disse Ford. Poi si rivolse ad Arthur: «Su, alzati e lascia il posto al signore». Arthur si alzò. Gli sembrava di vivere come in un sogno.

Ford chiamò con un cenno Prosser che, triste e goffo, si mise a sedere nel fango. A Prosser pareva che la sua vita fosse tutta un sogno, e a volte si chiedeva di chi fosse quel sogno, e se a chi lo faceva piacesse. Il fango gli si raccolse intorno al sedere e alle braccia, e gli colò nelle scarpe.

Ford lo guardò con occhi severi.

«E non provi a buttar giù la casa del signor Dent mentre lui è via, chiaro?» intimò.

«Questo pensiero non mi è passato nemmeno per l'anticamera del cervello!» brontolò Prosser, finendo di accomodarsi nel fango.

Vide il rappresentante del sindacato conducenti di bulldozer avvicinarsi e affondò la testa nel fango, chiudendo gli occhi. Cercò di riordinare le idee, preparandosi a dimostrare di non costituire un pericolo per la salute mentale, come fino a un attimo prima lo era stato Dent. Non era affatto sicuro di non rappresentare un simile pericolo, visto che si sentiva la testa piena di rumori, cavalli, fumo, e puzzo di sangue. Gli capitava sempre così ogni volta che si sentiva triste o raggirato, e non era mai riuscito a spiegarselo. In una sublime dimensione di cui noi non sappiamo nulla il possente Khan, evidentemente, urlava di rabbia, ma il signor Prosser, come sempre, si limitò anche questa volta a tremare un po' e a frignare. I suoi occhi si appannarono di lacrime. Beghe burocratiche, uomini arrabbiati stesi nel fango, imperscrutabili sconosciuti capaci di infliggere le più inspiegabili umiliazioni, e, dentro la sua testa, un ignoto esercito di uomini a cavallo che lo deridevano. Ah, che giornata!

Che giornata. Ford Prefect sapeva che non aveva la benché minima importanza che la casa di Arthur fosse demolita o meno.

Arthur, dal canto suo, era sempre molto preoccupato.

«Ma possiamo fidarci di lui?» domandò.

«Ah, io sono pronto a fidarmi di lui almeno fino alla fine del mondo» disse Ford.

«Oh, bene,» commentò Arthur «e quanto manca?»

«Circa 12 minuti» disse Ford. «Su, vieni, ho bisogno di un drink.»

2 Ecco come si esprime l'Enciclopedia galattica sull'alcol. Dice che l'alcol è un liquido volatile incolore originato dalla fermentazione di zuccheri, e fa inoltre notare i suoi effetti intossicanti su certe forme di vita a base carbonio.

Anche la Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti nomina l'alcol. Dice che la miglior bevanda alcolica che esiste è il Gotto Esplosivo Pangalattico.

Dice che quando si beve un Gotto Esplosivo Pangalattico si ha l'impressione che il cervello venga sbatacchiato da una fettina di limone legata intorno a un grosso lingotto d'oro.

La Guida insegna perfino come ci si può preparare da soli il Gotto. Prendete una bottiglia di Liquore Janx, dice. Riempitevi un bicchiere.

Poi versateci una dose d'acqua dei mari di Santraginus V. Ah, quell'acqua di mare santraginese!, dice la Guida. Ah, quei pesci santraginesi!! ! Fate sciogliere tre cubetti di Mega-gin di Arturo nella mistura (che dev'essere opportunamente ghiacciata, altrimenti l'alcol va perso). Aggiungete quattro litri di gas delle paludi falliane, in ricordo di tutti quei felici autostoppisti che sono morti di piacere nelle Paludi di Fallia.

Sul retro di un cucchiaio d'argento fate galleggiare una dose di estratto d'Ipermenta Qualactin, fragrante dei violenti sentori delle buie paludi Qualactine, dolci, pungenti e mistiche.

Aggiungete il dente di una Tigre del Sole Algoliana. Osservatelo dissolversi e diffondere il fuoco dei Soli di Algol nel cuore della bevanda.

Spruzzate un po' di Zanfuor. Aggiungete un'oliva.

Bevete... ma... con molta attenzione...

La Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti vende parecchio di più dell'Enciclopedia galattica.

«Sei pinte di birra» ordinò Ford Prefect al barista dello Horse and Groom. «E presto, per favore. Il mondo sta per finire.»

Il barista dello Horse and Groom non meritava quel trattamento: era un bravo vecchio. Si mise a posto gli occhiali, che gli erano scesi un po' sul naso, e fissò Ford Prefect stringendo gli occhi. Ford non lo degnò di un'occhiata e guardò fuori dalla finestra. Il barista allora passò a fissare Arthur, che alzò le spalle e non disse niente.

Allora il barista disse: «Davvero, signore? Be', se non altro fa bel tempo» e cominciò a spillare la birra.

Poi riprovò a parlare.

«Allora andate a vedere la partita oggi pomeriggio?» Ford si girò a guardarlo.

«No, non ha senso» disse, e tornò a guardare fuori della finestra.

«Ah, allora secondo voi il risultato è già scontato, signore?» chiese il barista. «L'Arsenal non ha speranze?»

«No, no» rispose Ford. «Il fatto è che il mondo sta per finire.»

«Oh, sì, signore, l'ha già detto» disse il barista, dando un'occhiata ad Arthur da sopra gli

occhiali. «Se fosse davvero così, sarebbe un bel modo di farla franca, per l'Arsenal!» Ford si girò a guardarlo, chiaramente meravigliato.

«No, non un gran bel modo, direi» precisò, aggrottando la fronte. Il barista tirò un gran respiro. «Ecco qui le sei pinte, signore.»

Arthur abbozzò un sorriso e alzò ancora una volta le spalle. Si girò e offrì lo stesso tiepido sorriso alla gente che stava nel pub, caso mai le parole di Ford fossero giunte all'orecchio di qualcuno.

Nessuno invece le aveva sentite, e nessuno capì perché lui avesse quello sciocco sorriso dipinto sulla faccia.

Un uomo seduto accanto a Ford guardò i due, guardò le sei pinte, fece un rapido calcolo, giunse a una conclusione che lo soddisfaceva e rivolse loro uno stupido e speranzoso sorriso.

«Giù le mani,» disse Ford «la birra è nostra» e gli lanciò un'occhiata che avrebbe ridotto al silenzio una Tigre del Sole di Algol.

Ford sbatté sul bancone una banconota da cinque sterline. «Tenga il resto» disse.

«Il resto di cinque sterline? Grazie.»

«Le restano dieci minuti per spenderle.»

Il barista decise semplicemente di allontanarsi un pochino.

«Comincia a bere» lo invitò Ford. «Hai tre pinte da far fuori.»

«Tre pinte?» fece Arthur. «All'ora di pranzo?»

L'uomo vicino a Ford sorrise e annuì, tutto contento. Ford non gli badò. Disse: «Il tempo è un'illusione. L'ora di pranzo è una doppia illusione».

«Un pensiero molto profondo» commentò Arthur. «Dovresti mandarlo al Reader's Digest. Dedicano una pagina a gente come te.»

«Bevi.»

«Perché dovrei scolarmi tre pinte?»

«Perché ti fa rilassare i muscoli, e presto avrai bisogno di farli rilassare.»

«I muscoli?»

«I muscoli.»

Arthur fissò la sua birra.

«Ho fatto qualcosa di male oggi» domandò «o il mondo è sempre stato così e io ero troppo rinchiuso in me stesso per accorgermene?»

«E va bene» fece Ford. «Tenterò di spiegarti. Da quant'è che ci conosciamo?»

“Da quant'è?” pensò Arthur. «Ehm, circa cinque anni, forse sei» rispose. «Allora le cose sembravano avere più senso.»

«Bene» disse Ford. «Come reagiresti se ti dicessi che non sono di Guildford, ma di un piccolo pianeta nelle vicinanze di Betelgeuse?»

Arthur si strinse nelle spalle, come a dire “boh”.

«Non lo so» disse, bevendo un sorso di birra. «Perché, stai per dirmi una cosa di questo tipo?»

Ford lasciò perdere. Era inutile sprecare tanta fatica, visto che il mondo stava per finire. Così si limitò a dire: «Bevi».

Poi, con la stessa naturalezza, aggiunse: «Il mondo sta per finire».

Arthur tornò a guardare la gente nel pub con un sorriso smorto. La gente del pub lo guardò con la fronte aggrottata. Un uomo alzò una mano, facendogli cenno di smettere di sorridere e di pensare agli affari suoi.

«Oggi dev'essere giovedì» si disse Arthur chinandosi sopra la sua birra. «Non sono mai riuscito a capirli, i giovedì.»

3 In quel particolare giovedì, qualcosa si muoveva placidamente nella ionosfera, molte miglia sopra la superficie del pianeta; anzi, vari qualcosa, parecchie dozzine di grossi, enormi cosi lastriformi, grandi quanto interi isolati, silenziosi come uccelli. Si libravano tranquilli, crogiolandosi ai raggi elettromagnetici della stella Sol, raggruppandosi, preparandosi, in attesa di agire.

Il pianeta sotto di essi ignorava quasi completamente la loro presenza, il che, per il momento, era proprio quello che volevano. Gli enormi cosi gialli passarono inosservati su Goonhilly, volarono anonimamente su Cape Canaveral, furono del tutto ignorati anche al loro passaggio su Woomera e Jodrell Bank (peccato per questi ultimi, che avevano sempre sperato di individuare quel tipo di oggetti).

L'unica cosa che registrò la loro presenza fu un piccolo congegno nero chiamato Sub-Eta Sensomatic, che si mise a lampeggiare da bravo in silenzio. Era ripo sto, al buio, nella borsa di pelle che Ford Prefect era solito portare al collo. Il contenuto di questa borsa era in effetti molto interessante, e avrebbe fatto strabuzzare gli occhi a qualsiasi fisico terrestre: era proprio per questo che Ford Prefect aveva sempre nascosto il tutto piazzandoci in cima un paio di copioni spiegazzati che dovevano in teoria servirgli per un'audizione. Nella borsa, oltre al Sub-Eta Sensomatic e ai copioni, Ford teneva un Pollice Elettronico, cioè un bastoncino nero, corto e tozzo, liscio e opaco, con un paio di pulsanti e levette a un'estremità. Inoltre, Ford possedeva anche un congegno che aveva l'aspetto di una calcolatrice sovradimensionata. Questo congegno presentava un centinaio di piccolissimi tasti piatti e uno schermo di circa tre pollici per quattro sul quale si poteva far apparire in qualsiasi momento la pagina che si voleva (le pagine erano un milione). L'aggeggio appariva spaventosamente complesso, e questa era una delle ragioni per cui sulla copertina erano stampate in grandi e rassicuranti caratteri, le parole NIENTE PANICO. L'altra ragione era che il congegno rappresentava il libro più notevole che fosse mai stato pubblicato dai grandi gruppi editoriali dell'Orsa Minore, ovverosia la Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti. La ragione per cui era pubblicato in forma di microelemento elettronico sub-mesonico era che, se fosse stato stampato in forma di libro normale, l'autostoppista galattico avrebbe avuto bisogno di numerosi edifici estremamente ingombranti per portarselo dietro.

In fondo alla borsa, sotto il libro, Ford Prefect teneva alcune penne a sfera, un notes e un ampio asciugamano da bagno acquistato da Marks & Spencer. La Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti dice alcune cose sull'argomento asciugamani.

L'asciugamano, dice, è forse l'oggetto più utile che l'autostoppista galattico possa avere. In parte perché è pratico: ve lo potete avvolgere intorno perché vi tenga caldo quando vi apprestate ad attraversare i freddi satelliti di Jaglan Beta; potete sdraiarvici sopra quando vi trovate sulle spiagge dalla brillante sabbia di marmo di Santraginus V a inalare gli inebrianti vapori del suo mare; ci potete dormire sotto sul deserto di Kakrafoon, con le sue stelle che splendono rossastre; potete usarlo come vela di una minizattera allorché vi accingete a seguire il lento corso del pigro fiume Falena; potete bagnarlo per usarlo in un combattimento corpo a corpo; potete avvolgervelo intorno alla testa per allontanare gas nocivi o per evitare lo sguardo della Vorace Bestia Bugblatta di Traal (un animale abominevolmente stupido: pensa che se voi non lo vedete nemmeno lui possa vedere voi – scemo quanto una capra, ma molto, molto vorace); inoltre potete usare il vostro asciugamano per fare segnalazioni in caso di emergenza e, se è ancora abbastanza pulito, per asciugarvi, naturalmente.

Ma, soprattutto, l'asciugamano ha una immensa utilità psicologica. Per una qualche ragione, se un figo (figo = non-autostoppista) scopre che un autostoppista ha con sé l'asciugamano, riterrà automaticamente che abbia con sé anche lo spazzolino da denti, la spugnetta per il viso, il sapone, la scatola di biscotti, la borraccia, la bussola, la carta geografica, il gomitolo di spago, lo spray contro le zanzare, l'equipaggiamento da pioggia, la tuta spaziale, eccetera eccetera. E dunque il figo molto volentieri si sentirà disposto a prestare all'autostoppista qualsiasi articolo di quelli menzionati (o una dozzina di altri non menzionati) che l'autostoppista possa aver, ehm, “perso”. Il figo infatti pensa che un uomo che abbia girato in lungo e in largo per la Galassia in autostop, adattandosi a percorrerne i meandri nelle più disagevoli condizioni e a lottare contro terribili ostacoli vincendoli, e che dimostri alla fine di sapere ancora dov'è il suo asciugamano, sia chiaramente un uomo degno di considerazione.

Da qui certi modi di dire entrati nel gergo dell'autostoppista, come per esempio nella frase: “Ehi, ciacci quel ganzo di Ford Prefect? È un frugo che sa davvero dove ci ha l'asciugamano!” (ciacciare = conoscere, rendersi conto di, incontrare, avere rapporti sessuali con; ganzo = tipo

proprio in gamba; frugo = tipo straordinariamente in gamba).

Riposto sopra l'asciugamano di Ford Prefect, nella sua borsa di pelle, il Sub-Eta Sensomatic si mise a lampeggiare sempre più frequentemente. Miglia e miglia sopra la superficie del pianeta, gli enormi cosi gialli cominciarono ad apparire, in schiera. A Jodrell Bank, qualcuno decise che era l'ora di concedersi una bella, rilassante tazza di tè.

«Hai portato un asciugamano?» chiese a un tratto Ford ad Arthur. Arthur, che si sforzava di bere la sua terza pinta, si girò a guardarlo.

«Perché? Mah, no... perché, dovrei forse averlo?» Ormai aveva smesso di meravigliarsi: sembrava che niente avesse più senso.

Ford fece schioccare la lingua, irritato.

«Bevi» incalzò.

Ad Arthur andò di traverso la birra. Scattò in piedi.

«Cos'è?» strillò.

«Non preoccuparti» lo rassicurò Ford. «Non hanno ancora cominciato.»

«Meno male!» fece Arthur, e si calmò.

«Sì, probabilmente stanno solo buttando giù la tua casa» disse Ford, scolandosi la sua ultima birra.

«Cosa? !» urlò Arthur. Di colpo l'incantesimo creato da Ford si spezzò. Arthur si guardò intorno con aria furiosa e corse alla finestra.

«Mio Dio, è vero! Stanno buttando giù la mia casa! Cosa diavolo ci faccio io in questo pub, Ford?»

«Ora come ora non fa alcuna differenza» disse Ford. «Falli divertire.»

«Divertire? !» strillò Arthur. «Divertire!» Tornò a guardare fuori dalla finestra, per essere sicuro che stessero parlando della stessa cosa.

«Ora li faccio divertire io!» urlò, e corse fuori dal pub agitando furiosamente il bicchiere di birra mezzo vuoto. La cosa non lo aiutò affatto a farsi degli amici, lì al pub.

«Smettetela, vandali! Distruttori di case!» urlò. «Smettetela, avete capito?, pazzi visigoti!»

Ford si sentì in dovere di seguirlo. Si rivolse in fretta al barista e chiese quattro pacchetti di noccioline.

«Ecco, signore» disse il barista, mettendo i pacchetti sul banco. «È così gentile da favorire ventotto pence?»

Ford fu molto gentile: diede al barista un'altra banconota da cinque sterline e gli disse di tenersi il resto. Il barista guardò prima la banconota, poi Ford. E a un tratto rabbrividì: provò una strana, improvvisa sensazione, una sensazione che non riuscì a capire, perché nessuno sulla Terra l'aveva mai provata prima d'allora. Nei momenti di forte stress, tutte le forme di vita esistenti emettono un infinitesimo segnale subliminale. Il segnale non fa che comunicare il senso preciso e quasi patetico dell'enorme distanza che separa l'essere che lo emette dal suo luogo di nascita. Sulla Terra è impossibile trovarsi a più di sedicimila miglia dal luogo di nascita, il che è non è molto lontano, per cui i segnali emessi sono talmente deboli che non si possono percepire. Ford in quel momento era sottoposto a un forte stress, e il suo luogo di nascita, vicino a Betelgeuse, era lontano seicento anni luce.

Il barista barcollò un attimo, colpito da quello scioccante e incomprensibile senso di distanza. Non capiva cosa significasse, ma guardò Ford Prefect con un senso di rispetto tutto nuovo, quasi con una sorta di timore reverenziale.

«Dice sul serio, signore?» chiese in un lieve sussurro che ebbe l'effetto di imporre il silenzio nel pub. «Crede davvero che il mondo stia per finire?»

«Sì» rispose Ford.

«Ma proprio oggi pomeriggio?»

Ford si era ormai ripreso e si sentiva al suo meglio.

«Sì» fece allegramente. «Direi fra meno di due minuti.»

Il barista non poteva fare a meno di ritenere incredibile quella conversazione, ma riteneva incredibile anche la sensazione che aveva appena provato.

«E non possiamo farci niente?» domandò.

«No, niente» rispose Ford, infilandosi in tasca i pacchetti di noccioline.

Tutt'a un tratto, nel bar divenuto silenzioso, qualcuno ruppe in una risata rauca che ridicolizzava la generale stupidità raggiunta dagli avventori.

L'uomo seduto vicino a Ford era ormai ubriaco fradicio. Posò i suoi occhi sbilenchi su Ford.

«Credevo» disse «che al momento della fine del mondo ci si dovesse sdraiare a terra, o infilare in testa un sacchetto di carta, o robe del genere.»

«Oh, se le va può farlo» concordò Ford.

«Be', questo è quanto mi hanno detto quando ero nell'esercito» spiegò l'uomo, e i suoi occhi ripercorsero la linea che da Ford portava al whisky.

«E funziona?» chiese il barista.

«No» disse Ford, con un sorriso cordiale. «Scusatemi» aggiunse. «Devo andare» e, salutando con la mano, uscì.

Il pub rimase ancora un attimo immerso nel silenzio, poi l'uomo dalla risata rauca rise un'altra volta, nell'imbarazzo generale. La ragazza che aveva portato al pub era arrivata, nel giro di un'ora, a provare un irrefrenabile disgusto per lui, e probabilmente sarebbe stata molto contenta di sapere che di lì a un minuto e mezzo l'abominevole tizio si sarebbe dissolto in una nube d'idrogeno, ozono e ossido di carbonio. Tuttavia, quando la cosa si fosse verificata, purtroppo lei sarebbe stata a sua volta troppo occupata a dissolversi per poterla notare.

Il barista si schiarì la voce, e sentì la sua voce dire: «Fate le ultime ordinazioni, prego».
