La psicosi del coronavirus in Italia

Ciao a tutti, benvenuti, o bentornati, su Podcast Italiano, il podcast per imparare l'Italiano attraverso contenuti interessanti ed autentici. E io sinceramente non volevo parlare dell'argomento di oggi, volevo evitare di parlarne. Ma, dato che si parla solamente di questo in Italia, dato che tanti studenti mi hanno chiesto di spiegare la situazione, ho deciso che forse è il caso di cercare di fare chiarezza, cercare di spiegarvi che cosa sta succedendo esattamente in Italia, cercando anche di essere… di dare informazioni esatte, perché in questi casi, in questi frangenti, in queste situazioni, gli Italiani diventano tutti esperti: abbiamo 60 milioni di esperti; e a me questa cosa non piace.

Io non mi ritengo esperto in nulla, e mi ritengo una persona normale. Quindi, cercherò di darvi informazioni che mi sembrano attendibili, provenienti da fonti attendibili, perché è anche difficile districarsi tra le informazioni che sono presenti nei giornali, nei giornali online, nei siti; perché, davvero, si parla solamente di questo, quindi il rischio è anche quello di darvi informazioni non attendibili, informazioni non corrette, inaffidabili, ed è quello che voglio evitare: voglio dire cose vere, cose esatte, per quanto possibile (ricordate che non sono un virologo, quindi non è il mio ambito di competenza).

Ma prima di iniziare questo episodio, due informazioni.

Ed ora ci sentiamo l'episodio. Volevo prima di tutto iniziare parlando del nome di questo virus, perché giornalisticamente è stato chiamato “coronavirus”. Tutti sentiamo parlare del “coronavirus”, ma, in realtà, “coronavirus” è una famiglia di virus. Per esempio, c'è il coronavirus che nel 2002/2003 aveva causato un'epidemia, l'epidemia di SARS. La SARS in realtà era la sindrome, la malattia causata dal coronavirus, dal nuovo coronavirus, perché i coronavirus possono mutare, possono crearsi nuovi coronavirus. E questo è un nuovo coronavirus, che in un certo senso si dice che sia “fratello” del coronavirus del 2002. Il nome tecnico di questo virus è: SARS-CoV-2; ovvero “Sindrome respiratoria acuta grave”, che sarebbe la traduzione in Italiano dell'acronimo “SARS”, “CoV”, coronavirus, 2. Poi, chiaro che non è certamente un nome molto facile da usare, quindi si è parlato, e si continua a parlare, semplicemente di “coronavirus”.

Ma poi c'è anche la malattia provocata dal nuovo Coronavirus, che è stata chiamata “COVID-19”: “CO” sta per corona; “VI” sta per virus; “D” sta per “disease”, malattia; “19” è l'anno in cui si è manifestata. Io, in ogni caso, lo chiamerò coronavirus, perché tutti ormai lo chiamano così: tutti i media, tutti i giornali, tutte le persone lo chiamano così, quindi non avrebbe tanto senso chiamarlo “SARS-CoV-2”, oppure “COVID-19”, o cose di questo genere.

I coronavirus, non solamente questo, ma anche le epidemie precedenti, come quella di SARS nel 2002 che abbiamo già menzionato, ma anche l'epidemia nel 2012 di MERS, cioè la sindrome respiratoria mediorientale comparsa in Arabia Saudita, causano infezioni respiratorie: sono malattie infettive delle vie respiratorie. Le vie respiratorie sarebbero i polmoni, i bronchi: tutto ciò che ci aiuta a respirare, diciamo.

E vi ricorderete quanto è successo con il nuovo coronavirus. L'infezione è nata, è stata annunciata, nella città di Wuhan, in Cina, ad inizio gennaio. Le autorità cinesi hanno annunciato che c'era questa nuova malattia infettiva, causata da un coronavirus che non si era mai visto, con cui l'uomo non era mai entrato in contatto prima. Questo virus poi si è diffuso in tutte le città principali della Cina, ma anche in altri paesi del mondo.

Ecco, prima di parlare dei nuovi casi di contagio di questo coronavirus, di ciò che sta succedendo proprio in questi giorni, in realtà c'erano già stati 2, anzi 3 casi: 2 turisti cinesi che si trovavano in Italia, e poi anche un ricercatore italiano di 29 anni, che lavorava a Wuhan e che era rientrato da pochi giorni in Italia. Questi tre casi sono stati messi in quarantena (la quarantena è questo periodo in cui non ci possono essere contatti con l'esterno) e sono tutti e tre guariti. Poi, però, tre settimane dopo, senza nessun nuovo caso confermato, è iniziato tutto il caos che è iniziato adesso, perché sono stati confermati nuovi casi. Prima, un caso di un trentottenne che risiede, che abita, dalle parti di Lodi, in una cittadina chiamata Codogno, che è una cittadina che tutti gli italiani hanno scoperto proprio in questi giorni. Quindi, un trentottenne dalle parti di Lodi: Lodi è una città, anche una provincia, a Sudest di Milano; e poi parallelamente c'è anche stato un caso di due anziani residenti a Padova, o meglio, in provincia di Padova. Se non sapete, in Italia abbiamo le provincie, che sono delle unità amministrative che non sono le regioni, ma sono più piccole delle regioni. Quindi, le regioni in un certo senso sono suddivise in provincie.

Quindi, due anziani nella provincia di Padova, che si trova in Veneto, quindi Nord-est, e uno dei due è morto. E quindi, dopo questi casi iniziali, sono iniziate le misure di prevenzione e di contenimento dell'infezione al fine di evitare che si diffondesse ulteriormente. Ecco, questi due luoghi che vi ho detto, il lodigiano (lodigiano, tra l'altro, significa la zona di Lodi) e il padovano (la zona di Padova) sono chiamati, in Italiano, i due “focolai” dell'epidemia. Un “focolaio” significa il luogo dove inizia l'epidemia; ma si usa in realtà anche per dire il luogo dove inizia qualcosa, dove può iniziare una rivolta, per esempio, popolare, “il focolaio della rivolta”, deriva da “fuoco” focolaio. Quindi, questi due focolai adesso a quanto pare sono connessi: si pensava che fossero separati, che non ci fossero connessioni tra i due focolai, ma in realtà sembrano essere connessi. Quindi, in realtà, il focolaio veneto, di Padova, è una sorta di derivazione, o una conseguenza del focolaio principale in Lombardia, ovvero nel Lodigiano.

Quindi adesso abbiamo, in Italia, 453 casi confermati e 12 morti, ma anche 3 casi di persone che sono guarite. Chiaramente, la situazione è in costante aggiornamento; quindi, io ve ne sto parlando alle 11.30 del 27 febbraio, poi, chiaramente, ogni ora la situazione cambia, i numeri cambiano. E io sinceramente trovo anche un po' ridicola questa attenzione così maniacale al numero preciso, al numero esatto, la diretta, la live… penso che non sia davvero così necessario, però questa è l'attenzione che c'è su questo fenomeno, un'attenzione davvero totale da parte di tutti i media. E ci possiamo chiedere: ma perché così tanti casi in Italia di COVID-19, di coronavirus? Perché negli altri paesi europei i casi, i numeri, sono molto inferiori? Cioè in Francia adesso vedo, in questa mappa interattiva, ci sono 28 casi, in Spagna 13, in Germania sono 27, in Italia sono 453 [i numeri sono già cambiati molto]. E potremmo chiederci: perché in Italia c'è questa situazione? Beh, in Italia abbiamo avuto la sfortuna che l'epidemia è nata all'interno di un ospedale; è stata amplificata da un ospedale, come dice Massimo Galli, che è ordinario di malattie infettive all'università di Milano. È la situazione più sfortunata possibile quando un'epidemia si innesca in un ospedale, un po' come è successo anche per la MERS, di cui vi ho parlato prima, nel 2015. All'ospedale di questa cittadina chiamata Codogno, nella provincia di Lodi, c'era un paziente, c'era qualcuno che era infetto da coronavirus. Non si sa, a dire il vero, esattamente chi fosse la prima persona che ha iniziato questo contagio; non è stato ancora capito, e sinceramente potremmo anche fare a meno di capirlo. Cioè, perché ci interessa tanto sapere chi sia stata la prima persona? Non si sa.

Comunque, come potete capire, l'ospedale è il luogo peggiore perché ci sono tante persone; anche tante persone deboli, quindi che presentano rischi maggiori di complicazioni gravi e anche di morte. E non è detto, non è detto che il contagio non acquisisca queste proporzioni anche in altri paesi europei. Chiaramente, mi auguro, e ci auguriamo tutti, che questo non succeda in altri paesi europei. Però, è probabile, è abbastanza probabile che accada nei prossimi giorni e nelle prossime settimane, anche perché non si può interrompere tutto il trasporto di persone tra paesi europei; non è possibile.

Inoltre, in Italia abbiamo anche fatto tanti test, abbiamo fatto tanti dei cosiddetti “tamponi”. I tamponi sono questo test che è stato sviluppato, che in qualche ora dà un risultato sulla positività o meno di un paziente. Quindi, dato che si è sviluppata questa situazione, in Italia abbiamo fatto molti, molti test e abbiamo anche trovato molte persone positive, ma questo non significa che in altri paesi non ci siano persone positive: magari ci sono e semplicemente non sono stati fatti i test necessari.

Quindi, anche questa potrebbe essere una spiegazione, perché io ho trovato questo dato: che in Cina sono stati fatti 200.000 tamponi, 28.000 in Corea del Sud, 4.000 in Italia; in Francia al momento sembra che siano stati fatti solamente 400 controlli con i tamponi. Quindi, l'Italia sicuramente è stata più sollecita nel fare controlli, quindi più zelante, più rapida nel fare controlli degli altri paesi, anche perché si è sviluppata la situazione del contagio; ma non è detto che non ci siano più casi, sia in Italia e sia in altri paesi europei, anche perché i sintomi di questo coronavirus, come anche degli altri coronavirus, possono ricordare i sintomi classici dell'influenza stagionale (quindi raffreddore, tosse, eccetera). In alcuni casi poi si possono sviluppare, possono diventare qualcosa di più serio; pare che nel 5% dei casi possano diventare … possano esserci complicazioni respiratorie gravi, ma non è da escludere che tante persone magari abbiano il coronavirus e lo scambino per influenza perché i sintomi sono simili, nel loro caso. Io ho fatto l'influenza la settimana scorsa, e sono stato, tra l'altro, a Milano, qualche giorno prima, per un concerto, prima che iniziasse la mia influenza, tre giorni prima. Ora, io dubito di aver contratto il coronavirus, ma c'è comunque una minima probabilità. Essendo quindi sintomi molto simili, è molto facile scambiare un'influenza normale per il coronavirus, oppure l'esatto contrario: scambiare il coronavirus per un'influenza normale. Ecco, comunque l'Italia, a parte i tamponi, ha anche reagito in maniera abbastanza veloce, abbastanza rapida, per esempio, istituendo la cosiddetta “zona rossa”. Cos'è una “zona rossa”? È quest'area nella zona di Codogno e dei comuni limitrofi (comuni limitrofi quindi vicini) nell'area del lodigiano, in Lombardia, come abbiamo visto, e sono praticamente, un po' come è successo anche in Cina a Wuhan, sono completamente bloccati. Cioè, c'è una zona all'interno della quale non si può entrare e dalla quale non si può uscire; e i punti di accesso sono presidiati dalla polizia e dall'esercito, addirittura. Cioè, è stato mandato l'esercito per impedire alle persone di entrare e di uscire! Chiaramente non è una bella situazione per le persone che vivono in queste zone, anche perché provate ad immaginare: essere chiusi in una zona all'interno della quale sei obbligato a rimanere e non puoi uscire perché c'è l'esercito, c'è la polizia, ci sono i carabinieri. È abbastanza brutto anche psicologicamente pensare una cosa del genere. Infatti, ci sono anche persone che hanno provato a scappare, qualcuno ci è anche riuscito a scappare da questa zona rossa. Chiaramente, queste persone non vengono abbandonate al loro destino: viene comunque portato loro cibo, e farmaci, però non possono uscire da questa zona, come abbiamo detto.

Sempre a proposito dei tamponi, solo il 4% dei tamponi che sono stati fatti hanno dato esito, quindi risultato, positivo. Quindi, questo dimostra che i tamponi vengono fatti in maniera molto, molto cautelativa, con molta cautela: non si sa mai che una persona possa avere il virus e diffonderlo, ma 4% è poco. In ogni caso, ci sono ormai tante regioni italiane che hanno dei casi: sono chiaramente la Lombardia, con il maggior numero, più di 250; ma poi il Veneto, con 87; 47 in Emilia Romagna; poi in Liguria; un caso solo in Piemonte, dove vivo io (si pensava tre, ma è sceso a uno); Lazio; Marche; Sicilia; Toscana. Quindi, sono tante regioni: il virus, chiaramente, si sta diffondendo e bisogna vedere se gli sforzi che vengono fatti saranno sufficienti per evitare una propagazione ulteriore.

E poi, oltre all'istituzione di questa zona rossa, e oltre ai tamponi che vengono fatti, sono praticamente state chiuse tutte le scuole, di ogni ordine e grado (che significa dall'asilo nido fino all'università), almeno nelle regioni del Nord, quindi anche nella mia regione è tutto chiuso. Ma anche le manifestazioni, gli eventi, per esempio il carnevale di Venezia è stato sospeso, tutti i carnevali sono stati sospesi. A Milano non si può andare nei bar, nei pub, dopo le sei di sera: in sostanza, le forme di aggregazione vengono vietate; non ci si può aggregare, non si possono radunare le persone perché chiaramente questo sarebbe rischioso e potrebbe peggiorare la situazione dei contagiati. Adesso poi non so esattamente le norme che sono state prese in ogni regione, sono più… ho maggiore familiarità con quelle che sono state prese nella mia regione, il Piemonte, però chiaramente penso che in Lombardia siano ancora più severe, e in altre regioni saranno… ci saranno alcune differenze.

In sostanza, se pensavate di pianificare un viaggio in Italia adesso, nei prossimi due mesi, io vi posso consigliare: evitate di farlo, non venite adesso, non è il momento migliore, meglio venire magari tra qualche mese, sperando che la situazione si sia risolta; adesso non è il caso (“non è il caso” significa che è meglio evitare).

L'Italia quindi è stata molto sollecita, ha preso delle norme anche abbastanza severe, anche abbastanza dure, per evitare il peggiorarsi della situazione. Potremmo però chiederci: ok, ma è necessaria questa reazione così forte? È davvero giustificata? A questo proposito ci sono state anche delle polemiche, anche tra scienziati, quindi in seno (“in seno” significa all'interno) della comunità scientifica, per esempio tra uno dei virologi italiani più famosi su internet, che è Roberto Burioni, e una sua collega, Maria Rita Gismondo, che è la direttrice del laboratorio diagnostica bioemergenze dell'ospedale Sacco di Milano. La signora Sacco aveva minimizzato il rischio, diceva che non è così grave, che è un po' ridicola la situazione che si è creata, mentre Burioni l'ha attaccata dicendo che non si può minimizzare la situazione, bisogna cercare comunque di evitare il diffondersi del contagio. Io sinceramente non sono un esperto, non sono un virologo, quindi non vi posso dire se queste misure sono giuste, sono giustificate. Quello che vi posso riportare sono i motivi di preoccupazione da parte dei medici e degli scienziati, tra cui lo stesso Roberto Burioni. Innanzitutto, quello che viene detto è che non è un'influenza: anche se i sintomi sono simili a quelli dell'influenza, non è come un'influenza soprattutto perché ci sono più casi di complicazioni, in cui la malattia degenera e si hanno complicazioni gravi, complicazioni respiratorie, rispetto a una normale influenza, non necessariamente tra persone anziane, che sì sono le persone che maggiormente muoiono, ma anche tra persone che hanno 40, 50, 60 anni e che finiscono in terapia intensiva. I casi gravi con complicazioni e le morti sono superiori, sembrano essere superiori a quelli dell'influenza. Certo, non sembra essere grave quanto la SARS del 2002. Si stima che la mortalità sia del 2% circa. È anche vero che se uno scava in profondità, scopre che non si può davvero stimare la mortalità perché non si può sapere il numero totale di contagi in maniera precisa. Per esempio, la stessa SARS del 2002, mentre era in corso, si era stimata … anzi, l'Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità aveva stimato una letalità, una mortalità del 4%, quando poi in realtà, dopo l'epidemia, questo numero è stato aumentato al 9%, quindi più del doppio. Adesso parrebbe che la mortalità di questo coronavirus è [meglio: sia] del 2% dei contagi, ma potrebbe essere più basso, potrebbe essere più alto: non è un numero molto affidabile in questa fase; dobbiamo aspettare che l'epidemia arrivi alla fine per avere numeri più precisi. In ogni caso, sembra essere più grave dell'influenza normale. Un altro problema è che gli anziani normalmente sono vaccinati (abbiamo visto: spesso gli anziani vengono colpiti). Ma, se vengono colpiti dall'influenza, gli anziani sono vaccinati; se vengono colpiti da questo virus … beh, non esiste alcun vaccino. Il vaccino è in fase di elaborazione, ed è proprio per questo che i morti che abbiamo visto fin ora sono quasi tutti anziani, quindi ultra sessantenni, ultra ottantenni.

Un altro motivo di preoccupazione, che è un po', in un certo senso, il “filo rosso” tra tutti questi motivi di preoccupazione di cui vi sto parlando, è che non si sa molto di questo virus: è un virus nuovo; fino a dicembre del 2019 non si sapeva nulla, quindi non si sa cosa succederà al virus, non si sa se si comporterà come un virus stagionale, e quindi con l'arrivo del caldo perderà di potenza, oppure no. Non si sa, e lo vediamo tra gli scienziati che ci sono punti di disaccordo. Quindi, questo dimostra che non sappiamo ancora abbastanza informazioni su questo virus e su come si svilupperà, e anche questo è un motivo di preoccupazione perché potrebbe svilupparsi e diventare più grave … non si sa, non lo sappiamo ancora, quindi meglio la cautela che minimizzare o banalizzare; o almeno, questo dicono alcuni scienziati. L'influenza stagionale la conosciamo da cent'anni, e più o meno quella è, e non cambia più di tanto: sappiamo che ci sono morti ogni anno, ci sono circa 5000 morti ogni anno, sappiamo più o meno quante persone vengono contagiate, quindi circa, se non sbaglio, 10 milioni di italiani, quindi un buon numero; ma la conosciamo: conosciamo bene l'influenza; mentre questo virus è qualcosa di nuovo, qualcosa di imprevedibile, che può mutare, che può cambiare, su cui non sappiamo ancora tanto. Un altro problema è che questo virus è molto, molto infettivo. Anche se non è così grave, e non ha un tasso di mortalità del 50% come l'ebola, è comunque piuttosto infettivo. Quindi, essendo tanto infettivo, se ci fossero milioni e milioni di casi di persone infettate, di persone contagiate, e tra queste persone il 5% rientrasse tra i casi in cui ci sono complicazioni, che richiedono la terapia intensiva, quindi il ricovero all'ospedale in terapia intensiva, quindi se si ignorasse completamente il problema e si lasciasse che il virus si diffondesse, ci sarebbero troppe persone ricoverate, troppe persone, più persone di quante ne potrebbe accogliere il sistema sanitario italiano, e questo, chiaramente, sarebbe un grande problema per il sistema sanitario nazionale. Io penso che la cautela sia meglio dell'ignorare il problema, far finta che non esista; dall'altro lato non bisogna diffondere il panico, che è esattamente quello che è stato fatto. Abbiamo visto: i media parlano solamente di questo, spesso utilizzando anche toni catastrofisti (attenzione: non catastrofistiCI, ho aggiunto una sillaba) ma lo sappiamo, i media fanno così. Perché? Perché questo garantisce loro click, visibilità, vendita di spazi pubblicitari: in ultima istanza, soldi. In un periodo in cui i giornali cartacei, ma anche online, non se la passano molto bene, chiaramente questo virus è un po' “manna dal cielo” per loro, perché gli permette davvero tanta, tanta attenzione. E quindi, e quindi il clickbait domina, il clickbait regna sovrano, e questo è negativo perché diffonde il panico.

Il panico non è mai buono, il panico non aiuta mai; e una parola che è molto importante per descrivere in un certo senso questa pazzia, questa isteria di massa è la “psicosi”. Psicosi è una parola che se leggete i giornali italiani vedrete molto, molto spesso in questi giorni: la “psicosi collettiva da coronavirus”. “Psicosi” è un termine psicologico, medico, però viene utilizzato in senso giornalistico per dire che le persone impazziscono, escono di testa, e iniziano a comportarsi in maniera irrazionale e stupida.

E se da un lato abbiamo i media che contribuiscono alla diffusione di questo stato di panico e di allerta; dall'altro lato abbiamo gli italiani che sono un popolo piuttosto propenso al panico e alle azioni irrazionali e assurde. E quello che abbiamo visto in questi giorni: beh, prima ancora del contagio massiccio in Italia abbiamo visto tanti casi di razzismo nei confronti dei cinesi, che è una cosa disgustosa, dalla quale io mi dissocio totalmente. Il razzismo nei confronti dei cinesi, e di qualsiasi popolo, non è mai giustificato, quindi vergogna agli italiani che hanno aggredito ed attaccato i cinesi.

Ma poi, quando il contagio è effettivamente iniziato, abbiamo visto che gli italiani si sono fiondati, cioè hanno assaltato i supermercati per comprare tipo la pasta, i prodotti di prima necessità, i legumi, il tonno, le scatolette appunto di tonno, di cibi che non sono deperibili, come se stesse per scoppiare la terza guerra mondiale e quindi bisogna fare scorte di cibo per un mese, che è una cosa ridicola, perché non sta succedendo questo, e in ogni caso lo stato non lascia da sole le persone che vengono contagiate, che sono costrette a stare in quarantena (quindi per due settimane non possono vedere nessuno, non possono uscire di casa). Lo stato le aiuta, lo stato porta il cibo, porta tutto ciò che è necessario; però, sono circolate immagini, e conosco persone che hanno visto i supermercati vuoti, o almeno alcune zone dei supermercati, con la pasta, per esempio, vuote. E in Italia la sezione della pasta è piuttosto ben fornita: noi amiamo la pasta, quindi vedere che non rimane quasi nulla, se non poche confezioni isolate, beh, sinceramente è abbastanza strano.

In ogni caso, ho cercato di spiegarvi la situazione. Come ho detto, non sono un esperto, però ho cercato di informarmi. Oramai si parla solamente di questo, quindi sicuramente se aprite i giornali italiani potrete verificare con i vostri occhi qual è la situazione attuale, quali sono gli sviluppi della situazione. Se ci fosse qualcuno che si preoccupa per me: non penso sia il caso di preoccuparsi per me, perché io sono a casa, lavoro a casa, non devo uscire di casa molto spesso. E poi comunque ricordiamoci che non è la peste nera, non è la peste bubbonica, quindi non bisogna avere panico; è una cosa che ripetono tutti.

Di fatto, gli italiani comunque vanno in panico lo stesso, entrano nel panico perché questa è la caratteristica degli italiani e i media contribuiscono a gettare benzina sul fuoco, cioè ad alimentare il panico.
