Una stella è nata

Serie televisive a parte, la maggior parte degli ammiratori di Bruce ha fatto la sua conoscenza attraverso i quattro film usciti mentre era ancora in vita. Questi titoli sono entrati nella leggenda non solo dei film d'azione. Essi sono: Il furore della Cina colpisce ancora del 1971, Dalla Cina con furore e L'urlo di Chen terrorizza anche l'Occidente, entrambi del 1972 e quest'ultimo anche con la sua regia, e I tre dell'Operazione Drago, diretto da Robert Clouse e uscito nel 1973. Per arrivare a realizzare queste quattro pellicole, vere pietre miliari del cinema, Bruce, nonostante il suo strepitoso talento, dovette faticare infinitamente.

L'inizio degli anni Settanta è per lui un momento cruciale. Anche se ancora non recita in film da protagonista, riesce a ottenere molte consulenze tecniche per scene di combattimento e parti minori in alcuni episodi di serie tv, tra cui la famosa Longstreet, scaturita anch'essa dalla penna di Silliphant, forse l'amico-allievo che maggiormente si è speso per il suo successo. Ma sono contentini, a dirla tutta.

Alla fine del 1971 si fa strada l'idea di una serie televisiva da realizzare con la Warner Bros., dal titolo The Warrior. Bruce è reduce dal successo strepitoso de Il furore della Cina colpisce ancora, girato in Thailandia e prodotto dalla hongkonghese Golden Harvest. La regia è di Lo Wei, un vero marpione che pare avesse anche stretti legami con la mafia cinese, ma comunque un regista abituato a sbancare i botteghini.

Grazie a questo film a Hong Kong Bruce Lee diventa una vera star, ma a lui non basta, vuole sfondare in America. Sa che deve sfruttare adesso questo successo commerciale in Asia per diventare finalmente un divo anche lì dove si trova il centro del mondo.

A dicembre, nonostante le premesse ottimali, riceve però la notizia che The Warrior, benché sgorgato in buona parte dalla sua mente, avrà come protagonista un altro attore, bianco, di nome David Carradine. La serie cambia nome ma non spirito, diventa la famosissima Kung Fu, un successo destinato a durare per tre stagioni, e che venne precluso a Bruce Lee per il semplice fatto di essere cinese. La cosa può apparire oggi paradossale, addirittura grottesca, ma questa era la Hollywood di quegli anni.

Lo spazio che Bruce non riusciva a trovare in America per via del colore della sua pelle continuava invece a essergli ampiamente concesso a Hong Kong. Fist of Fury (da noi Dalla Cina con furore, conosciuto negli Stati Uniti anche come The Chinese Connection), secondo pilastro della sua “tetralogia” cinematografica, divenne un successo inaudito. L'intensità drammatica della pellicola era davvero nuova per Hong Kong, e Bruce era un perfezionista, capace di girare decine di volte una scena fino alla sua piena soddisfazione. Anche da un punto di vista della produzione, e soprattutto della regia – i rapporti con Lo Wei peggioravano di giorno in giorno – sentiva di poter fare di più. Nel successivo Way of the Dragon (L'urlo di Chen terrorizza anche l'Occidente) Bruce decise di fare tutto da solo e nel progetto investì tutte le proprie risorse, mentali, fisiche ed economiche. Dopo aver fondato una propria casa di produzione insieme a Raymond Chow, si dedicò a ogni parte del suo film, realizzando sceneggiatura, regia, coreografie. Tutto doveva essere sotto il suo meticoloso controllo.

La storia passava per Roma e il Colosseo (ricostruito in studio), con un'epica battaglia finale tra lui e Chuck Norris. Quello che colpisce di questa scena è che alla fine, dopo un trionfo da vero guerriero, con altrettanto onore Bruce rende omaggio al corpo dell'avversario sconfitto, con un rispetto che ai nostri occhi risulta quasi cavalleresco. Il fatto che Bruce avesse lavorato con tutte le sue risorse a un film suo, e che l'avesse parzialmente ambientato in una città occidentale, è significativo. Il messaggio che voleva dare era qualcosa del tipo: “Se non mi date voi lo spazio che cerco, sarò io a prenderlo con le mie mani”, più o meno cioè quello che aveva sempre fatto da che era venuto al mondo.

Le riprese di Way of the Dragon l'avevano sfinito, ma Bruce era soddisfatto. Dopo un breve periodo di riposo si rimise all'opera, con in testa solo una vaga idea del suo film successivo. Si trattava di Game of Death, il suo vero testamento. La sceneggiatura era stata pensata per strizzare l'occhio anche al mercato occidentale, e all'orizzonte si profilò a un certo punto la possibilità di una coproduzione con la Warner Bros. La quale, però, aveva pensato per lui un altro titolo, ossia I tre dell'Operazione Drago (Enter the Dragon). L'America finalmente si accorgeva di lui. L'occasione non andava assolutamente persa. Bruce collaborò personalmente con Michael Allin alla sceneggiatura, mentre, come accennato, la regia fu affidata a Robert Clouse, un buon regista che, qualche anno dopo, si sarebbe impegnato nella restituzione al pubblico proprio di Game of Death, noto in Italia con il titolo di L'ultimo combattimento di Chen. Dopo la morte di Bruce, avvenuta nel 1973, del film erano rimasti soltanto 36 minuti e 40 secondi di girato. A partire dalle pochissime scene lasciate da Bruce e con l'uso spesso sfacciato di controfigure, Clouse è riuscito comunque a restituire questo progetto, che sarebbe stato probabilmente il capolavoro di Bruce, basato sulla sfida marziale a livelli. Concetto che mescolava all'azione la sua idea di arti marziali come ascesa spirituale e che al contempo si poneva a modello della struttura dei videogiochi. Un progetto geniale che pur nell'avventurosa edizione imbastita da Clouse è entrato nel mito del cinema (immortale lo scontro con il cestista Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) e dell'immaginario pop (una prova su tutte: la tuta gialla ripresa in tempi recenti da Kill Bill di Quentin Tarantino, film-omaggio al cinema di arti marziali). Quel futuro mitico e mitizzato era però ancora lontano, e Bruce pensava univamente al presente. Dopo l'offerta della Warner Bros. non stava nella pelle, e gioiosamente abbandonò Game of Death per dedicarsi al nuovo film. Il suo sogno si stava realizzando.

I tre dell'Operazione Drago andò come previsto: lo consacrò a livello internazionale. Per la Warner si trattò di un'intuizione tardiva ma eccezionale, che le fruttò un incasso enorme, secondo quell'anno soltanto a L'esorcista. Un successo straordinario che il protagonista assoluto, la nuova fulgida stella del cinema d'azione, non fece però in tempo a godersi.
