L'arte di semplificare

Prima di andare avanti nel racconto degli anni che seguirono, è necessario approfondire ancora il punto a mio avviso più importante, ossia come Bruce concepiva veramente la sua arte marziale.

Che fosse un atleta di altissimo livello e un insegnante di kung fu eccezionale l'abbiamo già visto. Ho solo accennato però al fatto che dal suo lavoro quotidiano stava sorgendo qualcosa di completamente nuovo. La tentazione di definirlo uno stile tutto nuovo è forte, ma così violerei uno dei comandamenti più importanti di Bruce riguardo il Jeet Kune Do. Per dirla con le sue parole, quello di cui sto per parlare è infatti “uno stile senza stile”. Quando ci si confronta su Bruce Lee con degli esperti, emerge subito il suo inconfondibile modo di combattere: rapido, preciso, inesorabile, in uno stato di perenne anticipo sull'avversario. Anticipare sempre l'avversario: è su questo aspetto che bisogna per prima cosa enfatizzare. Il sistema acquisì un nome verso il 1967, quando venne creato appunto il Jeet Kune Do, abbreviato spesso semplicemente con JKD. “La via del pugno che intercetta”, questo letteralmente il suo significato, doveva soddisfare la concezione rivoluzionaria di arte marziale di Bruce Lee.

Il suo approccio era come ho già accennato olistico, totale, capace di racchiudere in un gesto un'intera filosofia. Questo non è un libro che pretende di illustrare tecnicamente il Jeet Kune Do. Esistono moltissimi volumi sull'argomento, a partire dalle raccolte di manoscritti dello stesso Bruce, che meritano di essere almeno sfogliati già solo per le splendide illustrazioni realizzate di suo pugno. A me interessa unicamente cercare di cogliere e restituire l'essenza, lo spirito che ha animato il lungo e complesso percorso di ricerca di Bruce Lee, e che ha trovato la sua suprema sublimazione nel “metodo senza metodo”, per usare un'altra delle fulminanti espressioni del suo creatore. Nel suo “metodo senza metodo” Bruce andava a caccia di semplicità. Uno dei punti su cui Bruce ha sempre insistito è stata la diffidenza nei confronti delle tecniche marziali particolarmente scenografiche ed esuberanti. A che serve fare bella mostra di sé quando non si è efficaci? Chi ha visto combattere Bruce Lee ha sempre provato l'inebriante sensazione dell'essenzialità, di assistere a ogni cosa come fosse al posto giusto nel momento giusto, senza eccessi e manierismi. Benché fosse capacissimo di esibirsi in calci volanti e altre “mosse” di efficacissimo impatto visivo, la maggior parte dei calci del JKD sono bassi, stroncano l'avversario e lo riducono quasi in cenere prima che questi possa compiere ciò che ha in mente di fare. Bruce non diceva mai “fai un bel calcio”, diceva invece: “Scegli i bersagli più facili, quelli raggiungibili più semplicemente e colpisci”.

Bruce era consapevole che il talento poteva essere importante; prima di tutto però era fondamentale acquisire la conoscenza, cosa possibile solo attraverso il sacrificio e la più completa abnegazione. Non è un caso che la sua fonte ispiratrice principale fosse costituita dallo Zen e dal Tao, due tra le discipline spirituali e fisiche più severe al mondo. Nello Zen, inoltre, uno dei capisaldi è rappresentato dalla dissoluzione dell'ego, altro elemento importante per il vero cultore di Jeet Kune Do. Per noi può essere complicato mettere assieme una volontà di ferro e la dissoluzione dell'ego, cioè di quel centro personale con cui, nella civiltà occidentale, siamo abituati a fare i conti quotidianamente e che reputiamo essere il motore che genera la volontà stessa. Eppure non è così, e una volontà granitica può esistere soltanto in presenza di un ego che si dissolve. Quello infatti che noi scambiamo per forza di volontà è banale ostinazione, orgoglio, cocciutaggine: tutte qualità deprecabili e che portano a risultati soltanto provvisori. Quando Bruce ammonisce di “diventare un fantoccio di legno, che non ha ego, non pensa, non afferra e non stringe nulla”, sta attingendo alla profondissima saggezza di cui era figlio, e lo fa attraverso una delle tipiche espressioni icastiche di quella cultura.

Diventare un fantoccio di legno significa rinunciare al proprio orgoglio, al proprio tornaconto, al proprio successo. E, proprio per questo, trionfare. Una delle domande più frequenti che viene posta nei seminari di filosofia orientale è la seguente: come è possibile conciliare mancanza di ego e azione? Bruce dice continuamente: “Agisci!”, ma se non ho un ego come faccio ad agire? La risposta è che essere completamente nelle cose, privi di quella maschera che è l'ego, significa agire continuamente e naturalmente. L'arte e l'azione divengono veramente tali, nella loro più alta forma, solo quando sono privi di autocoscienza. Solo quando l'autocoscienza svanisce, e quindi quello che il grande Sekkei Harada, autore del fondamentale L'essenza dello Zen, chiama l'io-sé, scompare, a quel punto cessa ogni divisione. Noi e gli oggetti della nostra percezione diveniamo un'unica cosa. Persino se si tratta del nostro nemico.

Il Jeet Kune Do nasce da questi presupposti (dissoluzione dell'ego, essenzialità ed efficacia, disciplina quasi logorante), e naturalmente anche da una competenza tecnica superiore. Come sappiamo Bruce era espertissimo nel wing chun, eppure a un certo punto della sua vita comprende chiaramente che è necessario “gettare alle ortiche tutti i modelli, gli schemi, gli stili”. Anzi il concetto stesso di stile perde per lui ogni valore. Bisogna andare più in profondità nell'animo umano, cercare un atteggiamento interiore. Il Jeet Kune Do appare così come una liberazione, la sua personale forma di liberazione, in cui tutti i metodi possono essere utilizzati e si può far ricorso a qualunque stile, senza preconcetti ma con competenza.

Imparare tutti gli stili e poi dimenticarli, lasciando che sia il subconscio a utilizzare di volta in volta ciò che più è adatto alla situazione. “Sapere e non sapere”, dice ancora Harada, perché “la vera saggezza è un conoscere in cui non rimane alcuna percezione di quel conoscere”. Questo è un atteggiamento mentale talmente nuovo – e ancora oggi talmente rivoluzionario, almeno dalle nostre parti – che ad alcuni di noi risulterà faticoso persino da concepire.

Bruce afferma una cosa molto importante: “Non pensare di vincere o perdere: dimentica l'orgoglio e la sofferenza”. Solo capendo appieno queste parole possiamo veramente comprendere la sua danza d'acciaio, lo scaturire di mosse inesorabili e necessarie (nulla di meno, nulla di più), con cui Bruce annientava qualunque avversario. Ribadisco: qualunque avversario.

Una buona idea rimane tale anche se viene tratta fuori dal contesto in cui è nata. Questo è valido per le scienze, per la religione, per la filosofia, per l'arte. Come possiamo allora comprendere e applicare questo insegnamento illuminante di Bruce anche se non pratichiamo le arti marziali?

La vita non è fatta di scuole, di tecniche, di atteggiamenti e pregiudizi. È molto importante comprendere che le maschere, le personae (per usare un termine latino entrato nel nostro linguaggio con un'accezione diversa) che indossiamo, in verità non ci appartengono. Esse scaturiscono dalle contingenze e quel che è peggio da disposizioni preconcette. Più precisamente sono il prodotto di chi ci sta davanti, e dipendono da come noi reagiamo. I pregiudizi fanno la nostra personalità, e capire questo è già il primo passo per la “liberazione nell'azione” predicata da Lee. Le maschere sono reazioni, strati su strati di reazioni.

Bruce invoca in ciascuno di noi la capacità di abbandonare questi pregiudizi, che nel caso di un combattimento sono generati dall'avversario, ma che nella vita di tutti i giorni sono semplicemente l'altro che abbiamo davanti. Nel momento in cui diventiamo consapevoli di questo, cioè che un nostro dato modo di essere appartiene all'altro e non a noi stessi, questa maschera, questa modalità nata per soddisfare nel bene o nel male le richieste di qualcuno, si dissolve. La si può vedere allontanarsi come una barca deserta trascinata dalle correnti, e noi rimaniamo liberi spettatori, liberi di contemplare il nostro orizzonte. E di agire, se necessario.

Se si tratta di un combattimento diventiamo totalmente liberi di annientare l'avversario. Se si tratta del più complesso combattimento della vita, diventiamo liberi di essere finalmente noi stessi. L'azione diventa essenziale, nulla è più superfluo. Finalmente viviamo veramente.

Per arrivare ai migliori risultati Bruce chiede esplicitamente all'allievo di essere dinamico e attivo al massimo grado durante l'allenamento, ma calmo e imperturbabile durante il combattimento. Questo perché in fase di allenamento (tenete presente, però, che gli allenamenti con Bruce erano molto realistici) bisogna attingere a tutte le energie disponibili (compresa l'immaginazione) e può servire avere uno stimolo diverso dal qui e ora. Il combattimento è invece tutt'altra cosa, e deve sistematicamente rinnegare la drammaticità dell'evento in corso. Lasciar andare la presa è d'altronde il metodo migliore per risultare veramente vincitori. Questo può apparire incomprensibile per noi che viviamo in una società in cui di continuo ci viene chiesto di attaccare rabbiosamente l'avversario o i problemi (i nostri avversari in senso lato). Tale visione, tanto sciocca quanto diffusa, è sostanzialmente errata perché cieca. Essa infatti non vede come ogni volta che un problema (o un nemico) si pone davanti a noi, esso non è solo. Noi siamo come specchi, e riflettiamo immediatamente, al sorgere di un problema esterno, un omologo di esso dentro di noi. Così i nemici da combattere sono sempre due (o forse uno solo, realmente noi stessi).

Per dirla in altri termini esiste un nemico concreto, esterno, e un nemico che abbiamo introiettato, altrettanto reale, che lotta dentro di noi. Qualunque furibonda azione che mettiamo in campo non fa altro che dilaniarci dentro, perché attacca anzitutto una parte di noi stessi. Ecco perché dobbiamo mantenere la calma, e lasciare andare questo ospite indesiderato. Nel momento in cui rimaniamo veramente imperturbati, inattaccabili anzitutto dai nemici che vorrebbero insediarci nella nostra parte più intima, diventiamo eccezionalmente forti, e niente può più veramente colpirci. Vita e morte non devono riguardarci quando combattiamo, così come non deve riguardarci né l'idea del trionfo né il terrore della sconfitta. Il Jeet Kune Do è davvero, in questo senso, pura illuminazione, una luce netta che porta chiarezza. Vengono pertanto permessi tutti i movimenti e tutte le traiettorie – fermo restando il principio di economia –, qualunque sistema affiori dal subconscio per anticipare l'avversario e intercettare le sue mosse. Ogni abitudine, ogni pensiero ordinario, ogni formula devono essere trattati come spazzatura per la mente.

Il Jeet Kune Do è l'arte del semplificare, a cominciare dalla posizione di guardia, inizialmente ereditata dal kung fu e poi evolutasi in una posizione assai più fluida, e proseguendo in ogni aspetto tecnico, dalle cosiddette parate, agli attacchi, alle prese. Non c'è niente che venga trascurato dalla sua geniale, essenziale riletture.
