Torniamo al 1967.

A nemmeno 27 anni Bruce ha già messo a punto un'idea di arte marziale innovativa e addirittura rivoluzionaria, talmente potente da coinvolgere la concezione stessa della vita. Pronta per essere applicata a tutti gli aspetti del vivere quotidiano, anche in ciò che apparentemente non ha niente a che vedere con lo scontro fisico. Il 1967 è un anno molto particolare per Bruce: gli amici lo descrivono come presuntuoso, persino arrogante, incredibilmente sicuro di sé.

Il guaio è che, come per esempio afferma Silliphant, lui era “veramente il migliore”. Non c'era nulla che Bruce non vedesse, apprendesse al volo, e ripetesse subito dopo in maniera eccelsa, anzi ineguagliabile. Bruce era uno di quegli autentici fenomeni della natura che hanno avuto accesso a una sorta di benedizione. Solo che, nel suo caso, questa benedizione se l'era conquistata un giorno dopo l'altro, sudando come pochi altri. Ed Parker, che, come abbiamo già detto, di arti marziali se ne intendeva, non esitava a dire: “Bruce era uno su due milioni.

Bruce aveva tutti i talenti”. Aggiungo che li aveva perché se li era conquistati un grammo dopo l'altro. Non dovrebbe stupire troppo, pertanto, questo smodato orgoglio che già dava fastidio a tanti. Un caso abbastanza eclatante di questo suo inarginabile senso di superiorità si verificò a Hong Kong, negli studi televisivi di un canale cinese, nel corso di un programma piuttosto popolare.

Bruce era stato invitato insieme ad altri importanti maestri, esponenti delle varie tradizioni. Si sentiva un po' un pesce fuor d'acqua, era visto come una specie di eretico, un parvenu, sebbene in fondo fosse rispettato da tutti perché il Jeet Kune Do aveva già mostrato la sua brutale efficacia. A un certo punto accadde che uno tra i più anziani maestri presenti si alzò, si mise in posizione con grande cura e un fare quasi ieratico e sfidò ciascun esponente delle varie scuole a spostarlo da lì.

Sembrava davvero una di quelle stampe cinesi che ritraggono antichi maestri in posa. Lee guardò gli altri maestri fallire, uno dopo l'altro. Tutti provavano a spingere l'anziano combattente rispettato e quasi venerato, ma nessuno ci riusciva. Bruce si presentò per ultimo.

Il vecchio lo invitò con aria di sfida, certo che la montagna anziana e saccente del suo corpo non sarebbe crollata neppure di fronte a questo giovane sfacciato. Lee si avvicinò con quella sua andatura leggermente spocchiosa, da bulletto di Hong Kong cresciuto dando calci per le strade, lo sguardo del vittorioso arrogante già dipinto in volto. Era il suo turno, ma anziché spingerlo, come avevano fatto tutti gli altri, gli assestò un tremendo pugno in faccia. L'anziano maestro vacillò, quindi stramazzò a terra, travolto dallo sconcerto. In Oriente la sfida era forse più bruciante, perché Bruce si poneva realmente come un eretico. Ma dissidi simili li ebbe anche negli Stati Uniti, dove le comunità cinesi – persino più conservatrici di quelle della madrepatria – si guardavano bene dall'insegnare al nemico dalla pelle bianca i segreti di un'arte millenaria. Un patto fortissimo correva tra tutti i dojo, e nessuno, fino a che non era arrivato Bruce, aveva osato violarlo. Tra i vari episodi che Bruce stesso amava citare ce n'era uno, accaduto già nel 1964, in cui gli venne lanciato un ultimatum circa la sua volontà di insegnare ai bianchi.

La sfida però non ebbe subito luogo perché l'avversario se la diede a gambe. Il tizio era un buon corridore, e Bruce dovette faticare per acciuffarlo. Fu per questo motivo che lo ribattezzò “runner”, alludendo a Road Runner, il celebre “struzzo” inseguito da Wile Coyote nel cartone animato della Warner Bros. Alla fine riuscì ad agguantarlo e a batterlo con pochi colpi. Tuttavia, dopo quell'incontro, Bruce si sentì stremato, e realizzò che la sua forma fisica non era ancora quella che avrebbe voluto.

Da quel momento il suo allenamento divenne quell'incredibile tour de force che conosciamo, uno stato di continuo super-allenamento. Anche questo episodio è dunque significativo per illustrare il carattere e la tenacia senza uguali di Bruce.

Egli desiderava ardentemente migliorarsi, per giungere a un livello superiore a quello di chiunque altro. Una persona qualsiasi, persino un grande combattente, si sarebbe compiaciuto della vittoria e dello sforzo estremo necessario per ottenerla. Il fatto che il termine “arte marziale cinese” stesse pian piano liberandosi di un'accezione unicamente dispregiativa proprio grazie al suo lavoro tenace, gli permetteva di stilare un bilancio parzialmente positivo. Inoltre, il fatto che tutti e tre i campioni americani di free style, ossia Joe Lewis, Mike Stone e il grande Chuck Norris, fossero suoi allievi, gli sembrava una prova irrefutabile del suo successo nel campo dell'insegnamento.
