#87 – 5 momenti storici dal festival di Sanremo

Tra le cose che si raccontano sugli italiani e sulle italiane ce n'è una che si ripete. Si dice che noi amiamo litigare, discutere e dividerci su tutto. La spiegazione di tutto questo? C'è chi la trova nel calore del carattere mediterraneo, il famoso temperamento italiano. C'è chi invece attribuisce tutto alla storia italiana, fatta di lunghi secoli di divisioni e che ci portano ancora oggi a sentirci più legati all'identità locale che a quella nazionale.

Che dire? Forse c'è del vero in entrambe le osservazioni, ma molto probabilmente nessuna delle due è davvero risolutiva. E in fondo non è quello di cui vogliamo parlare oggi.

Ma del fatto che ci sono due situazioni precise in cui gli italiani e le italiane improvvisamente diventano davvero una nazione unita.

Della prima situazione abbiamo parlato qualche volta nel nostro podcast, sono le partite degli azzurri. In nome del calcio, religione nazionale, siamo in grado di unirci. Almeno per novanta minuti.

La seconda situazione è una simile al calcio, almeno nella sua capacità di essere universale. Anzi, nazionalpopolare, per usare la parola più usata per descriverla.

Sto parlando del Festival di Sanremo, il grande concorso della canzone italiana che va in scena ininterrottamente dal 1951 proprio nella città di Sanremo.

Non tutti amano Sanremo. Anzi, alcuni lo detestano. Ci sono persone che lo trovano un'occasione per ascoltare canzoni nuove e godersi uno spettacolo molto suggestivo, e ci sono persone che invece lo trovano un appuntamento conservatore e ipocrita. C'è chi conosce a memoria tutti i vincitori del festival dalla prima edizione a oggi, e chi odia ogni singola nota mai suonata sul palco del teatro Ariston.

Per semplificare, diciamo che ci sono tre tipi di persone in Italia. Quelli che guardano Sanremo, quelli che criticano quelli che guardano Sanremo, e quelli che criticano quelli che criticano quelli che guardano Sanremo. E comunque tutti ne parlano.

Perché il Festival è un fenomeno così capillare che ci riguarda tutti. Ha raccontato, e continua a raccontare, l'evoluzione della società italiana. E alcune cose successe a Sanremo sono diventate storia del nostro Paese.

Per questo, ho scelto di raccontartene cinque. Questo è un podcast per perfezionare il tuo italiano. Con parole ed espressioni nuove, ma anche con le storie che condividiamo come nazione.

Sanremo 1967 – Addio a Luigi Tenco

Nel 1967 partecipa al festival di Sanremo, un giovane musicista irrequieto. Si chiama Luigi Tenco. È di origine piemontese anche se è cresciuto in Liguria e fa parte della cosiddetta scuola genovese. È amico, tra gli altri, di una vecchia conoscenza di questo podcast: Fabrizio De André. Tenco, come altri cantautori della sua generazione, è molto ambizioso. Non gli piace l'idea di scimmiottare gli americani, lui vuole prendere la tradizione della canzone italiana e modernizzarla.

Negli anni precedenti alla sua partecipazione a Sanremo, Tenco mostra una vena artistica di grande valore e anche un'anima tormentata e ribelle. Frequenta ambienti di sinistra e per questo la polizia lo tiene d'occhio, la censura controlla le sue canzoni.

Quando decide di partecipare a Sanremo, lo fa di malavoglia e con una canzone che si chiama Ciao amore ciao. Il titolo sembra classico e anche un po' melenso, e il ritmo un po' la fa sembrare una canzone allegra. In realtà è un pezzo malinconico e profondo sull'Italia, sempre più fatta da persone che lasciano la campagna per andare in città e si trovano improvvisamente smarrite.

Una canzone bellissima. L'idea però è troppo moderna per la giuria di Sanremo e il risultato è deludente. Per Tenco, che si sente da anni un artista incompreso, quella è la goccia che fa traboccare il vaso. Dopo l'esibizione, torna in albergo, prende una pistola, se la punta alla tempia e si uccide.

Per anni, la tragica morte di Luigi Tenco è stata una ferita aperta per la musica italiana e per l'immagine di Sanremo. Oggi ricordiamo questo cantautore geniale, troppo moderno per i suoi tempi, con un premio che porta il suo nome, il Premio Tenco, riservato alla canzone d'autore.

Sanremo 1968 – L'equivoco di Louis Armstrong

L'edizione successiva a quella del tragico suicidio di Luigi Tenco ha un'atmosfera un po' strana. È ancora possibile fare spettacolo con leggerezza dopo quello che è successo? Non si sa, ma decidono di provarci. Dopotutto, anche questa è l'Italia. Al festival di quell'anno, partecipano molti interpreti italiani famosi ma anche una stella di livello internazionale. Il trombettista e cantante jazz americano Louis Armstrong, che partecipa con una canzonetta dal titolo Mi va di cantare. L'esibizione è un po' grottesca a dire il vero. Armstrong, secondo le regole, deve cantare in italiano, una lingua che non conosce. Così, mentre è sul palco, legge il testo da un foglio appiccicato al pavimento e storpia con il suo accento americano praticamente tutte le parole che pronuncia.

La canzone è bruttina e un po' stereotipata, ma il pubblico in sala applaude entusiasta e Armstrong, da grande artista, prende la tromba e inizia a suonare un altro brano. Il classico del gospel When the saints go marching in. La cosa prende di sorpresa gli organizzatori perché il regolamento di Sanremo permette ai cantanti in gara di cantare solo una canzone. Il presentatore allora deve salire sul palco imbarazzato e fermare in qualche modo l'artista a metà del brano.

La verità su questa storia si scoprirà solo qualche tempo dopo: Armstrong non aveva nemmeno capito di essere lì come partecipante, credeva che lo avessero invitato come ospite e -visto che lo avevano pagato bene- non gli sembrava il caso di andare via dopo solo una canzone!

Sanremo 1983 – Vasco Rossi

Facciamo un salto in avanti di 15 anni per raccontare la seconda partecipazione al festival di un personaggio decisamente unico della musica italiana: Vasco Rossi.

Anche se oggi è un po' attempato, Vasco Rossi continua a definirsi un rocker e mostra sempre uno stile trasgressivo e anticonformista. Negli anni '80, la cosa era ancora più evidente. Soprattutto in un contesto molto attento all'immagine e alla tradizione come il festival di Sanremo. Difatti è anche strano vedere uno come lui sul palco dell'Ariston. Non è il suo pubblico, non è il suo posto. Ma perché è lì? Perché Sanremo è Sanremo e concede una visibilità che in Italia non ha eguali.

Così, nel 1983, Vasco si presenta al festival decisamente a modo suo. Ha proposto una canzone dal titolo Vita spericolata. È una canzone che parla di una vita dissoluta, senza morale né valori, e orgogliosamente piena di problemi. Un testo dissacrante e autodistruttivo, lontano dalla morale italiana tradizionale. Certo, mi direte, erano gli anni 80, ma Sanremo su queste cose è sempre dieci anni indietro rispetto al resto del Paese.

Vasco canta sul palco del festival con l'aria di uno che è uscito un attimo per comprare le sigarette. Indossa un paio di jeans e un vecchio giubbotto, tiene le mani in tasca, e canta completamente indifferente. Anzi, più che cantare, praticamente biascica. E lascia il palco prima che la canzone sia finita. Il festival è un disastro, arriva penultimo. Però Vita spericolata, diventa un tormentone. E oggi è ancora la sua canzone più famosa.

Sanremo 1986 – Loredana Bertè, signora a chi?

Dopo un grande provocatore, una grande provocatrice. Loredana Bertè. Anche lei cantante dal gusto rockettaro e ambasciatrice di uno stile di vita dissoluto e libertino. Del resto, la sua canzone più famosa di sempre si intitola Non sono una signora e parla di un modello di vita femminile diverso da quello tradizionale con cui venivano e ancora vengono educate le ragazze di buona famiglia.

A Loredana Bertè piace stupire e anche scandalizzare, con uno spirito davvero rivoluzionario e non molto comune nella canzone italiana. Nel 1986 partecipa a Sanremo con la canzone Re. Sul palco la accompagnano musiciste e ballerine che portano vestitini cortissimi e aderentissimi di pelle e borchie, e lei stessa ne indossa uno così. E non solo. Perché da sotto il vestito si vede chiaramente una pancia rotonda e soda, tipica delle donne in gravidanza. Ovviamente Loredana Bertè non è davvero incinta in quel momento. La sua è una provocazione sul ruolo della donna. Le donne incinte, ha spiegato lei stessa, vengono trattate come malate, invece sono forti e se vogliono, possono anche ballare. Nel 1986, l'Italia era ormai un Paese moderno, dove persino l'aborto era diventato legale da anni. Eppure, come detto, Sanremo da un punto di vista sociale ha sempre rappresentato la parte più conservatrice del Paese. L'esibizione di Bertè è considerata scandalosa, ne parlano i giornali e persino i politici, e la sua casa discografica le cancella il contratto. Morale? L'anno scorso, a Sanremo 2021, Bertè è tornata da ospite, con i capelli tinti di un azzurro intenso e tutto il Festival l'ha accolta con applausi scroscianti. Ci voleva tempo, Loredana, perdonaci.

Sanremo 1989 – L'universo di Mia Martini

Tre anni dopo l'esibizione di Loredana Bertè, arriva il turno di sua sorella, Domenica, che però è entrata nella storia della canzone con lo pseudonimo di Mia Martini. Rispetto alla vulcanica Loredana, Mia ha un temperamento molto diverso, più tranquillo, e presenta uno stile più tradizionale e melodico.

Il suo cavallo di battaglia è una voce assolutamente unica per potenza e varietà, una voce che le permette di interpretare brani anche molto diversi tra loro ma sempre con una grandissima partecipazione emotiva.

Tuttavia, nonostante la sua musica sia tranquilla e rassicurante, la vita di Mia Martini è piena di problemi e incidenti. Da ragazza viene arrestata per il possesso di uno spinello, una sigaretta di marihuana. Poi comincia la sua carriera artistica che diventa presto importante e riconosciuta, ma le costruisce addosso pressioni e invidie molto difficili da gestire.

Mia Martini negli anni 80 si allontana per un po' dalla musica, a causa di problemi di salute, ma anche della sua stanchezza verso il mondo discografico che la tratta come una mucca da mungere, di cui approfittare finché è possibile.

Torna dunque nel 1989, proprio a Sanremo, con una canzone dal titolo Almeno tu nell'universo. La canzone di per sé è bella, ma non indimenticabile. Però quella sera al teatro Ariston il pubblico è incantato. Perché l'esibizione di Mia Martini è semplicemente magistrale. La sua voce potente è piena di emozioni. Felicità, paura, rabbia, euforia. E si sentono tutte, nello spazio di una sola canzone.

Per la giuria del Festival, Almeno tu nell'universo merita soltanto il nono posto. In compenso, Mia Martini ottiene il premio della critica.

Vincerà l'anno dopo cominciando un nuovo periodo di successi, anche se accompagnato da molte ombre. L'ombra di una malattia grave che aveva deciso di non curare perché aveva paura che l'intervento possa cambiarle la voce. E anche l'ombra di alcool e droghe. E l'insieme di tutto questo che poi il 12 maggio del 1995 la ucciderà. La ritroveranno senza vita due giorni dopo, sola, distesa sul letto in un appartamento in affitto in provincia di Varese, in Lombardia.

La seconda storia, dopo quella di Luigi Tenco, che finisce in modo tragico. Non è quello che associamo a Sanremo. La festa dei fiori, della musica, delle canzoni d'amore e dei vestiti bellissimi.

Il festival continua a essere tutto questo ancora oggi. Le morti non sono una diretta responsabilità di Sanremo.

Come con Tenco, però, il festival di Sanremo onora anche Mia Martini. Il premio della critica, quello espresso esclusivamente da una giuria di esperti, oggi porta il suo nome.
