Le vent soufflait alors du sud-ouest avec la douceur que le langage barométrique appelle « force 2 : brise légère ». Le garde-côte qui était de service fit tout de suite un rapport, et un vieux pêcheur, qui pendant plus d'un siècle avait surveillé les signes météorologiques depuis East-Cliff, prophétisa de manière emphatique l'arrivée d'une tempête soudaine. L'approche du crépuscule était si merveilleusement belle, si majestueuse avec ses masses de nuages richement colorés, qu'il y avait tout un rassemblement de promeneurs, entre le cimetière et la falaise, venus contempler cette beauté. Avant que le soleil ne disparaisse derrière la masse sombre de Kettleness, qui se découpait, chauve, sur le fond du ciel occidental, son flanc s'est teinté de myriades de nuages portant toutes les couleurs du crépuscule - fauve, pourpre, rose, vert, violet, et toutes les nuances de l'or; avec ici et là des masses allongées, qui paraissaient d'un noir absolu, et qui prenaient toutes sortes de formes, dessinées comme des silhouettes colossales. Cette expérience ne fut pas perdue pour les peintres, et nul doute que les croquis du « Prélude à une grande tempête » vont orner les murs de la Royal Academy et du Royal Institute en mai prochain… Plus d'un capitaine se demanda à cet instant si son « cobble » ou sa « mule » - qui désignent, dans leur jargon, différentes classes de bateaux - allait résister, au port, à cette tempête. Le vent retomba complètement durant la soirée, et à minuit il y eut un calme plat, une chaleur étouffante, et cette intensité ambiante qui affecte, à l'approche de l'orage, les personnes d'une nature sensible. IL y avait très peu de lumières visibles sur la mer, parce que même les steamers de la côte, qui d'ordinaire cabotent très près du rivage, naviguaient plus au large, et très peu de chalutiers étaient en vue. Le seul navire remarquable était une goélette étrangère, toutes voiles dehors, qui paraissait se diriger vers l'ouest. La témérité ou l'ignorance de ses officiers fut un grand sujet de conversation, durant tout le temps où il resta en vue, et on fit même des efforts pour lui faire signe de réduire la voilure pour affronter le danger. Avant que la nuit ne tombât, on le vit avec ses voiles claquant paresseusement, alors qu'il roulait doucement sur la houle ondulante de la mer, « aussi paresseux qu'un bateau peint sur un océan peint ». Un peu avant dix heures, l'immobilité de l'air devint vraiment oppressante, et le silence était si profond que le bêlement d'un mouton dans la campagne, ou l'aboiement d'un chien en ville, s'entendaient distinctement, et l'orchestre sur le quai, jouant

son entraînante mélodie française, était comme une dissonance dans la grande harmonie silencieuse de la Nature. Un peu après minuit un bruit étrange arriva de la mer, et dans les hauteurs aériennes on entendit un grondement étrange, vague et caverneux. Alors, sans crier gare, la tempête éclata. Avec une rapidité qui parut incroyable sur le moment, et qui est même a posteriori impossible à comprendre, la nature entière parut entrer en convulsion. Les vagues s'élevèrent dans une fureur grandissante, chacune plus haute que la précédente, jusqu'à ce que la mer, qui, l'instant d'avant était comme un miroir, ressemblât à un monstre hurlant et dévorant. Des vagues écumeuses battaient follement le sable du rivage, et montaient à l'assaut des falaises; d'autres déferlaient sur les quais, balayant de leur écume les lanternes des phares qui s'élevaient au bout de chaque quai du port de Whitby. Le vent grondait comme le tonnerre, et soufflait avec une telle force qu'il était difficile, même à des hommes puissants, de se tenir debout, ou bien s'accrochait lugubrement aux poteaux d'acier. On jugea nécessaire d'évacuer l'ensemble des quais de la masse des badauds, sous peine que les conséquences dramatiques de la nuit ne soient décuplées. Pour ajouter encore aux difficultés et aux dangers de ce moment, des paquets de brouillard de mer remontèrent dans les terres - des nuages blancs, humides, qui glissaient comme des fantômes, si humides et glacés qu'il ne fallait pas beaucoup d'efforts pour imaginer que les esprits de ceux qui s'étaient perdus en mer venaient toucher leurs frères vivants avec les doigts poisseux de la mort, et plus d'un frémit au passage de ces gerbes de brume. Par instants, le brouillard se dissipait, et l'on pouvait voir la mer au loin, à la faveur des éclairs qui devenaient de plus en plus épais et rapides, suivis de coups de tonnerre si terribles que le ciel entier paraissait trembler sous les pas gigantesques de la tempête. Les scènes qui se révélaient alors étaient, pour certaines, aussi grandioses que passionnantes - la mer, charriant des montagnes d'eau, lançait vers le ciel à chaque vague de puissantes masses d'écume blanche, que la tempête paraissait arracher et rouler dans l'espace; çà et là un bateau de pêche, avec un lambeau de voile, se précipitait follement vers un abri avant d'être soufflé; parfois les ailes blanches d'un oiseau marin balloté par la tempête. AU sommet d'East Cliff, le nouveau projecteur était prêt, mais n'avait pas encore été essayé. Les officiers qui en avaient la charge le mirent en marche, et, dans les trouées de la brume montante, ils en balayèrent la surface de la mer. Une fois ou deux l'engin fut efficace, comme lorsqu'un bateau de pêche, qui prenait l'eau par le plat-bord, se précipita dans le port : il fut capable, grâce à cette lumière providentielle, d'éviter le danger de s'écraser contre les quais. A chaque fois qu'un bateau atteignait sain et sauf le port, il y avait un cri de joie parmi les gens rassemblés sur le rivage, un cri qui pendant un moment paraissait percer la tempête, et qui était ensuite emporté dans son élan. Le projecteur mit bientôt en lumière à quelque distance une goélette avec toutes les voiles déployées, apparemment le même vaisseau qui avait été remarqué plus tôt dans la soirée. A ce moment, le vent avait tourné à l'Est, et il y eut un frisson parmi les badauds sur la falaise, quand ils réalisèrent dans quel terrible péril ce navire se trouvait. Entre lui et le port s'étendait le grand récif sur lequel tant de bons bateaux s'étaient cognés au cours du temps, et, avec le vent soufflant de cette façon, il paraissait presque impossible que le vaisseau pût trouver l'entrée du port. C'était maintenant presque l'heure de la marée haute, mais les vagues étaient si énormes que dans leurs creux les hauts-fonds étaient presque visibles, et la goélette, avec toutes ses voiles déployées, allait à une telle allure, que, aux dires d'un vieux loup de mer, « elle devait foncer droit sur quelque chose, même si c'était l'enfer ». Alors arriva une nouvelle vague de brume de mer, plus épaisse que toutes celles qui avaient précédé - une masse de brouillard humide, qui semblait se refermer sur toutes choses comme un linceul gris, et ne laissait aux hommes que le sens de l'ouïe, car le rugissement de la tempête, le fracas du tonnerre et le grondement puissant des flots parvenaient encore plus forts à travers cette matière humide. Les rayons du projecteur furent braqués sur l'entrée du port, au niveau du quai Est, où l'on craignait le choc, et les hommes attendirent, le souffle suspendu. Le vent, alors, tourna au nord- est, et le brouillard qui restait se mélangea aux rafales; et alors, ô merveille, entre les quais, l'étrange goélette, bondissant de vague en vague à une vitesse incroyable, déboula, toutes voiles déployées, sema la tempête et gagna la sécurité du port. Le projecteur la suivit, et un frisson parcourut tous ceux qui la regardaient, car il y avait un cadavre arrimé au gouvernail, avec une tête affaissée qui se balançait sinistrement à chaque mouvement du bateau. Sur le pont, aucune autre silhouette n'était visible. On ressentit un émerveillement effrayé quand on prit conscience que le bateau, comme par miracle, avait rejoint le port, sans

autres mains sur la barre que celles d'un mort ! Enfin, tout ceci arriva en beaucoup moins de temps qu'il n'en faut pour l'écrire. La goélette ne s'arrêta pas, mais continua sa course à travers le port, jusqu'à s'échouer contre un banc de sable et de galets accumulés par les marées et les tempêtes dans le coin sud-est du quai qui s'étend en dessous d'East Cliff, appelé le Tate Hill Pier. Il y eut bien sur un gros choc lorsque le vaisseau heurta le banc de sable. Tous les espars et cordages se tendirent, et une partie du mât s'effondra. Mais le plus étrange de tout fut que, à l'instant précis où le navire heurta le rivage, un énorme chien jaillit des entrailles du bateau sur le pont, comme s'il en était projeté par une explosion, et, courant droit devant lui, sauta par dessus bord sur le sable. Il se dirigea droit vers la falaise escarpée, à l'endroit où le cimetière borde de si près l'allée vers East-Pier, que certaines de ses tombes creuses -les « pierres trouées », comme il les appellent à Whitby - s'effondrent littéralement sous l'effet de l'érosion, et il disparut dans les ténèbres, qui paraissaient encore plus obscures au-delà de la portée du projecteur.
