Les mérovingiens : les premiers rois du Moyen Âge ! (1)

Mes chers camarades, bien le bonjour !

Le Moyen ge a longtemps eu une mauvaise réputation qui nous fascine encore aujourd'hui : celle des

âges sombres (Dark Ages en anglais), qui seraient une période de violence,

de régression durant laquelle on vivait dans la crasse et la pauvreté.

Cette vision d'une époque barbare et sale nous vient en partie des auteurs de la renaissance,

qui ont fait passer leurs prédécesseurs pour des bouseux sans foi ni loi afin de

se revendiquer comme les dignes descendants spirituels de l'Antiquité lumineuse. On a

donc appelé cette période le « Moyen » « ge » pour bien faire comprendre qu'il

ne s'agissait que d'une parenthèse, d'une transition entre deux périodes civilisées.

Evidemment, on est revenus sur ces idées fausses : on sait bien que c'était à l'époque

moderne qu'ils avaient peur du savon ! On connait désormais assez bien le Moyen ge,

la féodalité, les châteaux, les guildes de marchands ou encore les Vikings... Cependant,

on a du mal à y voir clair sur ce qu'il s'est passé durant les trois premiers siècles de la

période. Ce qu'on appelle le haut Moyen ge et qui s'étire du Ve au IXe siècle.

Allez, accrochez-vous à vos braies, on part à la rencontre des mérovingiens !

De nos jours, nous possédons assez peu de sources écrites pour étudier ces premiers

siècles du Moyen ge. On en possède bien plus sur l'Antiquité ou sur la fin du Moyen ge,

ou encore sur l'époque moderne. On commence à avoir plus de témoignages écrits entre les

VIIIe et IXe siècle, donc sous la dynastie des carolingiens, surtout dans le domaine diplomatique

mais pour les mérovingiens, la première dynastie des rois du Moyen ge, c'est une autre histoire.

Si l'on en croit les auteurs contemporains ou presque, comme Frédégaire, Eginhard ou même

Grégoire de Tours qui est LA référence historique sur le début du haut Moyen

ge…et bien les rois mérovingiens étaient presque entièrement une bande de glandeurs,

peu d'entre eux à part Clovis ont trouvé grâce à leurs yeux. Et c'est ce comportement,

selon notre bon Grégoire, qui les aurait menés à leur perte, jusqu'à ce que les Pipinides,

plus connus sous le nom de carolingiens, viennent enfin mettre de l'ordre dans tout ça.

On a donc eu la vision d'une période assez pauvre culturellement, carrément barbare même(au sens

romain du terme, donc les « non-romains »), ce qui a conduit à faire des amalgames et à penser

qu'il s'agissait de gros crasseux qui ne savaient pas faire grand-chose de leurs dix doigts. Alors,

la Gaule a-t-elle été aux mains de rois de la glandouille au début du Moyen ge ? Enquête !

Plantons rapidement le décor : au tout début du Ve siècle, la Gaule est un large territoire

divisé en provinces romaines où l'on pouvait rencontrer des cultures très diverses. Certaines

régions comme la côte méditerranéenne étaient très romanisées et d'autre moins, bien que certaines

villes plus éloignées de Rome comme Bordeaux ou Autun présentaient tout de même des traditions

culturelles fortement romanisées. Aux alentours de 406, des groupes de populations « barbares »,

dont des Vandales, des Alains et des Suèves, franchissent le Rhin et passent la frontière

germanique. A cette période, l'Empire romain d'Occident a cessé de s'étendre et cherche plutôt

à maintenir ses frontières en place. Devant la pression de certains groupes barbares, notamment

dans le nord de la Gaule, l'Empire ne va pas avoir d'autre choix que de les fédérer, par le foedus :

un pacte qui instaure la paix entre les partis et autorise l'installation de groupes sur les terres

de l'Empire, en échange de leur soutien à Rome. Fun fact pas vraiment fun : au XIXe siècle,

les historiens ont appelé ces mouvements de populations germaniques les « grandes invasions

». Depuis la fin de la seconde Guerre Mondiale, on est revenu sur ce terme car il donnait une

fausse idée de ces incursions et mouvements migratoires, en les présentant comme des

invasions organisées ayant pour but de s'emparer des territoires et d'en chasser – voire d'en

tuer – les occupants. Ce qui est pas du tout le cas ! On parle maintenant des migrations ou de la

période des migrations barbares et vous pouvez d'ailleurs en apprendre plus sur cette période

assez complexe en allant voir l'épisode que j'ai fais dessus, je vous le mets en description !

Certains des groupes germaniques descendent donc jusqu'en actuelle Espagne, d'autres

s'installent en Gaule, comme les Alains aux alentours de 440 en Gallia ulterior,

qui correspond au nord de la Loire actuelle. Les Wisigoths, peuple originaire du Danube,

s'installent dans le sud-ouest de la Gaule après avoir mis Rome à sac en

410. Ils occuperont une place importante dans le paysage politique de cette région avant d'être chassés par les Francs et de s'installer au nord de l'actuelle Espagne.

Les Burgondes, sans doute rendus célèbres par Kaamelott il faut l'avouer, sont le troisième

groupe barbare à s'installer « officiellement » en Gaule, dans la région de l'actuelle Savoie.

Entre le Ve et le IXe siècle, on observe de nombreux échanges entre barbares et gallo-romains,

les premiers s'intégrant avec succès à l'aristocratie locale. Selon les régions,

on peut clairement voir – dans les textes comme par les sources matérielles – des adoptions et

des abandons de ce qui constitue les cultures barbares et romanisées de la

Gaule de cette période. Les derniers arrivés, mais les mieux servis sont les Francs saliens.

Ce sont eux qui nous intéressent plus particulièrement aujourd'hui car ils

vont s'installer peu à peu en nouant des liens avec Rome,

tout en combattant et en s'alliant à ceux qui les entourent. Et c'est eux, les francs saliens,

qui fondent à terme la dynastie mérovingienne ! L'histoire des origines de cette dynastie pourrait

faire un bon scénario, mais attention, les sources écrites du haut Moyen ge sont assez

floues et elles se contredisent parfois, donc il est difficile de savoir qui est vraiment

le fils de qui, ou même qui a vraiment existé… Le nom de « mérovingiens » vient de « Mérovée »,

une figure semi-mythique qui serait le père de Childéric Ier, et donc le grand-père du

célèbre Clovis. Dans les chroniques de Frédégaire, on apprend un détail très

intéressant : Mérovée serait un descendant du chef franc Chlodion, et aurait pour père un Quinotaur,

un monstre marin qui aurait agressé et fécondé sa mère alors qu'elle se baignait tranquillement.

Bon, je vous avais prévenu que les sources étaient floues hein…

La vision classique que l'on a du début du Moyen ge oppose les populations barbares aux

populations romanisées. Les premiers Francs qui s'installent en Gaule,

menés donc par Childéric Ier, sont alors logiquement présentés dans les textes

comme des païens encore très attachés à leur culture barbare. C'est à partir de Clovis que

la christianisation aurait finalement unis pour le meilleur, les barbares païens aux gallo-romains.

Mais les choses ne se sont pas si simples ! Ces changements ne se sont pas passées

aussi rapidement et uniformément et pour le coup il y a autant des francs qui

adoptait des coutumes romaines que l'inverse. Un exemple de l'adoption de certaines coutumes

romaines par les francs nous est parvenu via la sépulture que l'on attribue au roi Childéric Ier,

le fils présumé de Mérovée, qui règne de 458 jusqu'à sa mort en 481. Souvenez-vous,

les textes du haut Moyen ge sont rares et ne présentent pas une foule de détails comme les

sources historiques de l'époque moderne… alors imaginez le bonheur qu'on ressenti les érudits

historiens lorsque l'on a découvert à Tournai, le 27 mai 1653, une sépulture qui renfermait

de nombreux objets en or et en grenats, dont une bague sur laquelle était gravée CHILDERICI

REGIS // « Childéric le roi ». On a compté de nombreuses pièces de parure dont plus de

trois cents abeilles en or, mais également une épée longue au pommeau en or et grenats,

un scramasaxe, une hache, et 200 monnaies dont certaines provenaient de Byzance .

La bague est gravée d'un portrait d'homme en buste de face, porte une cuirasse et

arbore une lance sur l'épaule droite. Sur l'épaule gauche, il porte le paludamentum,

une sorte de cape, signe distinctif dans l'armée romaine. Ce portrait évoque donc

clairement les caractéristiques des portraits d'empereurs romains.

On peut noter que ses cheveux sont longs et reposent sur les épaules. Les premiers rois

francs étaient appelés les rois chevelus (Rex crinitus) car la longue chevelure était un signe

distinctif des guerriers et des chefs ! On a d'ailleurs mis au jour de nombreuses

sépultures de la période, dans lesquelles avaient été déposés

auprès des défunts de magnifiques peignes en os très caractéristiques.

Le fait que le défunt ait été déposé avec une épée, c'est clairement issu de la culture

franque puisque c'était une culture guerrière dans laquelle les armes prenaient une place

importante. On a donc ici un témoignage assez parlant sur le fait que des francs ont adopté

des coutumes romaines mais aussi byzantines avec la présence des monnaies, ce qui est cohérent avec

leur installation et le foedus, le pacte, passé avec l'Empire Romain. Sous le règne de Clovis,

qui succède à son père Childéric en 481, les choses vont prendre un nouveau tournant pour

les Francs. C'est à ce moment que naît l'idée de réunir politiquement les groupes pluri ethniques

présents en Gaule, que les sources romaines désignent comme franques. Pour être clair,

les francs, à cette époque, sont encore une mosaïque de tribus.

On est donc plutôt loin du bloc unifié

culturel et politique sous-entendu lorsque l'on parle de royauté franque.

Cependant, c'est bien sous Clovis, qui crée l'exercitus francorum,

que l'impulsion d'unification est donnée et qu'émerge le premier royaume des Francs. Ce

chef de guerre respecté va s'assurer le soutien de l'Eglise en se convertissant

en 496. C'est à partir de ce moment là que les aristocrates Francs, dont Clovis,

vont s'allier et développer leur identité, en construisant un système de représentation

fondé sur la notion de peuple. Clovis s'impose en roi, en faisant travailler la mémoire de ses

origines et en construisant sa généalogie enracinée dans un passé quasi mythique.

Et coup de bol, l'affaire va marcher et durer, en témoigne l'histoire de Mérovée qui nous est

parvenue. Rappelez vous, le monstre marin qui agresse sa mère tout ça...

Cette façon de revendiquer sa généalogie en faisant intervenir des éléments mythiques

est d'ailleurs un héritage romain. On pensera ici aux origines divines des lulii par exemple,

une vieille famille à laquelle appartient le célèbre César qui grâce à sa généalogie

un poil traffiquotée peut se targuer d'être le descendant de Vénus elle même !

A côté de cela, Clovis va éliminer ses rivaux et faire coucher par écrit en latin la loi salique,

qui va participer à forger l'identité des francs. Il s'agit d'un recueil de règles,

qui révise le droit romain alors en vigueur en Gaule, en apportant des

nouveautés avec l'établissement de codes de lois germaniques, qui jusque là était oraux.

Et c'est assez malin parce qu'en faisant ça, Clovis manifeste d'une part sa volonté

de s'intégrer aux élites gallo-romaines qui répondaient au droit romain, tout en

marquant bien son identité puisque ces lois se fondent sur l'origine ethnique des individus,

et établi une tarification des peines et des amendes, en fonction des crimes

que l'on avait commis. C'est bien beau de vous dire qu'il y avait des amendes

ou des peines à cette époque là mais il y a quoi concrètement dans cette loi salique

?Avant toute chose, sachez que le terme wergeld – littéralement « prix de

l'homme », est communément employé pour désigner la tarification des crimes dans la loi salique,

en posant des cadres à la vengeance privée qui était très prisée par les populations

barbares.On découvre ainsi toute une série de wergeld encadrant par exemple le vol d'animaux :
