La folle histoire des bourbons - Question Histoire Adulte #10

Il y a quelques temps j'avais fais un épisode sur les dynasties qui avaient marqué l'Histoire

et vous êtes nombreux à m'avoir demandé des renseignements sur les bourbons.

Aujourd'hui, j'exauce donc vos voeux :)

Avant de commencer il faut savoir qu'il il y a eu durant l'histoire de France trois

dynasties appelées « Bourbon ». Celle qui nous intéresse aujourd'hui, la troisième,

qui est aussi la plus connue et la puissance de toute, n'a aucun lien avec les autres.

Elle débute lorsque Robert de Clermont, sixième et dernier fils de Saint-Louis, alors roi

de France, épouse Béatrice de bourgogne en 1272.

Par ce mariage, Robert de Clermont devient seigneur du Bourbon – aussi appelé Bourbonnais

–, un territoire qui correspond grossomodo au département actuel de l'Allier.

A la mort de Robert, c'est son fils Louis Ier de Bourbon qui hérite de la seigneurie,

élevée en duché en 1327.

Durant les deux siècles qui suivent, la dynastie prospère et agrandit son patrimoine, puisqu'elle

récupère les comtés de Clermont et de Forez.

La maison se divise ensuite en plusieurs branches, et elle ajoute à ses possessions bourbonnaises

plusieurs autres territoires.

L'une de ses branches se retrouvera à la tête du comté de Vendôme, un petit comté

situé dans l'ouest dans le France au nord de Tours.

Jusque-là, la dynastie des bourbons n'est pas exceptionnellement puissante, et il en

existe des dizaines comme celle-là.

Une situation qui va néanmoins changer avec Antoine de Bourbon, et c'est le moins qu'on

puisse dire.

Antoine de Bourbon (1518-1562), duc de Vendôme, de Beaumont et de Marle se marie en 1548 avec

Jeanne D'Albret, future reine de Navarre.

Lorsque son beau-père Henri II de Navarre meurt, il devient alors roi consort de Navarre,

et comte de Foix, de Bigorre, d'Armagnac, de Rodez et de Périgord par mariage.

Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, la dynastie des Valois, à la tête du royaume de France,

voit le nombre de ses héritiers diminuer, si bien qu'au bout d'un moment, Antoine

de Bourbon se retrouve parmi les héritiers potentiels du trône de France.

Il ne deviendra pourtant jamais roi lui-même, puisqu'il meurt en 1562, blessé par un

tir d'arquebuse alors qu'il pissait contre un rempart...une mort pour le moins originale...

Son fils Henri, déjà roi de Navarre par sa mère, récupère le trône de France en

1589 lorsque Henri III, roi de France et dernier des Valois meurt assassiné par un moine sur

sa chaise percée...ses chiottes… Tient d'ailleurs, petit aparté, si vous

aimez les morts à la con, j'ai fais deux épisodes là dessus, et très bientôt vous

devriez en voir un troisième...les liens des épisodes déjà dispo sont dans la description…

Bref ! Cette succession, qui porte les bourbons au

plus haut des étages du pouvoir, n'est pas sans heurt.

Henri IV hérite du trône en vertu de la loi salique qui veut que seuls les héritiers

mâles puissent être rois en France.

Il n'est alors que le cousin au 22e degré de Henri III à qui il succède.

Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, Henri IV est protestant à une époque où les guerres

de religion font rage et où le roi de France est par tradition catholique.

Lorsqu'il monte sur le trône, il doit alors faire face à une grande résistance.

Henri IV se confronte alors à la Ligue Catholique qui refuse de le reconnaître comme souverain.

Il entame une longue reconquête contre ses détracteurs, pacifiant alors le royaume tout

en cherchant à faire valoir ses droits de succession.

Victorieux, il finit néanmoins par accepter de se convertir au catholicisme.

En 1598, il met fin aux guerres de religion en proclamant l'édit de Nantes ; la même

année, il met fin à la présence espagnole et il élargit les frontières du royaume

vers l'est.

À sa mort en 1610, Il lègue à son fils Louis XIII un royaume considérablement renforcé.

La France est alors à cette époque un pays riche, et c'est aussi le pays le plus peuplé

d'Europe avec quelques 20 millions d'habitants, un chiffre considérable pour l'époque.

L'apogée du règne des Bourbons continue avec Louis XIII, qui finit par réunir les

couronnes de France et de Navarre, et surtout avec Louis XIV (1638-1715) dit « le roi soleil

» au règne de tous les records, notamment celui de longévité.

Le royaume s'agrandit alors considérablement, puisque des provinces comme l'Alsace, l'Artois

ou encore le Rousillon y sont alors incorporées.

Sous Louis XV (1715-1774), la France s'agrandit du Barrois, de la Lorraine et des Dombes,

lui donnant alors une forme semblable à celle qu'on lui connait aujourd'hui.

Puis vient le règne de Louis XVI.

Ce dernier, volontiers réformiste, est confronté à de très nombreux problèmes budgétaires

mais aussi autoritaires, puisque ses ambitions se heurtent fréquemment à celle de la noblesse

et de la bourgeoisie.

Comme vous le savez certainement déjà, Louis XVI n'a pas eu une fin particulièrement

heureuse.

Bien que ce dernier ait au départ accepté de devenir Monarque constitutionnel, abandonnant

donc une bonne partie de ses pouvoirs, il est arrêté et jugé en 1792 par les républicains

qui l'accusent d'avoir comploté contre la Révolution et d'avoir tenté de fuir

le royaume.

Il est décapé le 21 Janvier 1793, signant la fin du règne glorieux des Bourbons en

France.

Certes, plusieurs rois de la dynastie des Bourbons se succéderont sur le trône de

France entre 1815 et 1848.

On assiste d'ailleurs durant cette période à une querelle dynastique entre les frères

de Louis XVI et une branche concurrente des bourbons appelée « maison d'Orléans », cette

dernière reversant la première en 1830.

Si la maison de bourbon a eu en France une fin tragique, il ne faut pas oublier que cette

dynastie a aussi été celles d'autres états d'Europe, et pour certains, elle l'est

d'ailleurs encore.

L'Espagne, par exemple.

En effet, lorsque Charles II d'Espagne meurt en 1700, c'est Philippe de France, alias

Philippe V, 2e petit-fils de Louis XIV qui monte sur le trône espagnol.

Si ce dernier avait été désigné héritier par Charles II lui-même par testament, ce

n'est pas du goût des autres nations européennes qui ont alors peur que les couronnes de France

et d'Espagne soient portées par la même personne.

En effet, si la France et l'Espagne venaient à ne faire qu'un, comme cela avait été

le cas de la France et de la Navarre avec Louis XIII, la France deviendrait de loin

l'état le plus puissant d'Europe.

L'Autriche décide alors que l'Espagne lui revient de droit, tout comme le roi de

France d'ailleurs, et l'Angleterre et les provinces-unies voudraient éviter que

l'Espagne passe à l'un ou à l'autre.

Commence alors la guerre de succession d'Espagne, à la suite de laquelle Philippe s'impose

comme roi d'Espagne, même si ce dernier doit alors pour cela renoncer à toute prétention

pour lui et ses descendants au trône de France.

Depuis, les bourbons règnent toujours sur l'Espagne, puisque le roi actuel, Philippe

VI, est de cette dynastie.

Cependant, ce règne des bourbons sur la péninsule ibérique a été discontinu : en effet, l'Espagne

a connu le bonapartisme ou encore la dictature militaire,

Autant de régimes sous lesquels la dynastie des bourbons a été écartée.

La dynastie des bourbons a également été à la tête du royaume de Naples et de Siciles

entre 1759 et 1861 par la branche des bourbons-siciles et la tête du duché de Parme de 1731 à

1801 et de 1807 à 1860, ou encore à la tête du royaume éphémère d'Étrurie entre

1801 et 1807 par la branche des bourbons- parme.

Ce qu'on sait moins, c'est que l'actuel grand-duc du Luxembourg, Henri de Luxembourg,

est également issu de la branche des bourbons de parme, même si la famille porte encore

aujourd'hui officiellement le titre « de Nassau ».

La dynastie de bourbon est surtout associée à l'Espagne nous l'avons dit, car elle

règne toujours sur le pays.

C'est d'ailleurs la plus vieille maison d'Europe encore actuellement en règne.

En ce qui concerne le royaume de France, elle n'a pas régné exceptionnellement longtemps,

elle ne lui a pas donné beaucoup de rois si on la compare à d'autres, ils ont cependant

été parmi les plus influents de leur époque et ils font partie les plus connus.

Henri IV pour ses nombreuses conversions, Louis XIV pour son règne de monarque absolu

à Versailles, Louis XVI pour avoir perdu la tête.
