Mes chers camarades bien le bonjour !

Aujourd'hui je vous emmène visiter la cathédrale d'Evreux, sans doute un des lieux les plus maudits de la région. Vraiment, quand j'ai attaqué le sujet, je me suis dis “mais c'est pas possible, ils ont pas de bol…”, Allez, on va revenir ensemble sur son histoire et vous allez le voir, y'a matière !

Début XIIe, la cathédrale romane est flambant neuve, un petit bijou...mais pas pour longtemps…

En 1119, Henri 1er, roi d'Angleterre, envoie ses troupes sur le comte d'Evreux, Amaury III de Montfort, vassal du roi de France. Sur les conseils de l'évêque d'Evreux, Audin, qui lui est fidèle à l'Angleterre, Henri 1er brûle toute la ville, y compris la cathédrale qui devient un véritable champ de ruine.

Son baptême du feu, c'est le cas de le dire, va vite devenir une tradition locale…

La reconstruction du bâtiment commence dès 1126 et se poursuit jusqu'en 1140. Le choeur, le transept et la nef sont refaits, la cathédrale devient plus belle que jamais.

J'aimerais d'ailleurs qu'on fasse une petite aparté, parce que perso je sais pas vous, mais moi, quand il s'agit d'architecture, je suis pas hyper à l'aise. Alors c'est bien beau de dire le choeur, le transept et la nef, mais c'est quoi exactement ?

Le choeur c'est là où se trouve l'autel. pas trop compliqué.

La nef, c'est en gros la partie qui va de l'entrée de la cathédrale jusqu'au coeur, sachant qu'il peut y avoir plusieurs nef.

Dans ce cas là cette partie que je viens de décrire, c'est la nef principale.

Ensuite, Le transept. C'est un cas particulier de nef puis que c'est la nef qui va couper la nef principale perpendiculairement. En gros le transept c'est la nef qui va former la croix chrétienne dans l'architecture du bâtiment et qui passe souvent par le choeur.

On peut ajouter qu'au fond des bâtiments religieux comme ici dans la cathédrale d'Evreux, vous avez souvent un arrondi qui vient après le choeur, ça c'est le prolongement de la nef avec ce qu'on appelle le déambulatoire où l'on peut...déambuler ! Voilà, vous êtes maintenant architecte, félicitations et bonne partie de Minecraft !

La cathédrale est donc toute neuve fin XIIeme ! Mais là encore… pas pour longtemps ! En effet les tensions entre la France et l'Angleterre sont plus vives que jamais. Jean sans Terre, frère du roi d'Angleterre Richard coeur de Lion et régent de la ville d'Evreux, convoque près de 300 officiers français à un grand banquet et, comme dans Game Of Thrones, les fait tous massacrer au moment de porter un toast. Le roi de France, Philippe Auguste, vit assez mal cette situation et décide de tout cramer en 1195...y compris la cathédrale…

Suite à ça, les travaux n'ont pas vraiment le temps de se relancer puisqu'en 1198,

Richard revient à Evreux et la brûle une nouvelle fois dans la foulée.

Voilà.

Il faudra près de 20 ans pour accumuler assez de fonds pour lancer les campagnes de restauration.

Alors là aussi, il faudrait une vidéo spéciale sur l'architecture pour comprendre les réelles différences, ou plutôt les changements qui s'opèrent dans une certaine continuité de l'architecture romane, parce que c'est complexe. Mais en gros, on apporte un peu plus de lumière, on renforce cette impression de verticalité, de hauteur vu de l'intérieur, les motifs se font plus complexes. Toutefois, ces travaux n'en finissent pas et 100 ans plus tard, seuls la nef et le choeur de la cathédrale sont terminés.

Ce qui n'est peut être pas une si mauvaise chose...Car en 1356, rebelote !

Le roi de France Jean II, dit “Le bon”, est en conflit avec son gendre Charles II de Navarre, comte d'Evreux, dit “le mauvais”, qui veut prendre sa place. Le roi Jean décide donc de...mettre le feu à la ville et à la cathédrale...Et ça marche moyen puisqu'il ne parvient pas à reprendre Evreux.

Mais quand Jean II passe l'arme à gauche, Charles V le remplace et lui, il veut reprendre la ville. Et en 1378, devinez ce qu'il fait notre bon roi pour arriver à ses fins ?

Oui...il remet le feu à la ville et donc...à la cathédrale ! Encore...

Enfin la paix pour la cathédrale d'Evreux ?

Malheureusement non, car la tradition, c'est la tradition !

Bien plus tard, le 11 juin 1940, les allemands bombardent la ville d'Evreux. Les maisons prennent feu, les flammes se propagent aux tours de la cathédrale, la célèbre flèche de plomb de la tour du transept fond et le métal en fusion se déverse par la bouche des gargouilles. Une vision d'apocalypse qui laisse une grande partie de l'édifice en ruine.

Pas de bol hein ? Quand ça veut pas...ça veut pas...

Ouf !? Non.

C'était sans compter sur dame nature ! Après avoir résistés aux guerres et aux incendies pendant près de 6 siècles, sans même avoir été protégés, ces fameux vitraux seront victimes d'une incroyable pluie de grêlons de la taille d'un oeuf en 1983. Ils seront tout simplement pulvérisés…
