Encore quelques degrés, et elle atteindrait le point précis de l'espace où devait s'opérer sa rencontre avec le projectile. D'après ses propres observations, Barbicane calcula qu'il l'accosterait par son hémisphère nord, là où s'étendent d'immenses plaines, où les montagnes sont rares. Car la situation eût été terrible si le boulet, manquant son but et entraîné au-delà du disque, se fût élancé dans les espaces interplanétaires. En ce moment, la Lune, au lieu d'apparaître plate comme un disque, laissait déjà sentir sa convexité. Si le Soleil l'eût obliquement frappée de ses rayons, l'ombre portée aurait fait valoir les hautes montagnes qui se seraient nettement détachées. Le regard aurait pu s'enfoncer dans l'abîme béant des cratères, et suivre les capricieuses rainures qui zèbrent l'immensité des plaines. Mais tout relief se nivelait encore dans un resplendissement intense. On distinguait à peine ces larges taches qui donnent à la Lune

Cette inquiétude eût encore redoublé s'ils avaient senti combien leur vitesse était médiocre. Elle leur eût paru bien insuffisante pour les conduire jusqu'au
