En moins de deux jours, la Susquehanna, forçant sa vapeur, pouvait être arrivée au port de San Francisco. Elle dut donc partir sans retard. Les feux étaient poussés. À la vue de ce bâtiment de la marine nationale, arrivant à grande vitesse, son beaupré rasé, son mât de misaine étayé, la curiosité publique s'émut singulièrement. Une foule compacte fut bientôt rassemblée sur les quais, attendant le débarquement. Après avoir mouillé, le capitaine Blomsberry et le lieutenant Bronsfield descendirent dans un canot armé de huit avirons, qui les transporta rapidement à terre. Maston, Long's Peak, montagnes Rocheuses ; 4° au sous-directeur de l'Observatoire de Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ces hommes dévoués partirent sans perdre un instant, et le rail-road, qui doit traverser bientôt toute l'Amérique centrale, les conduisit à SaintLouis, où les attendaient de rapides coachs-mails. Presque au même instant où le secrétaire de la Marine, le vice-président du Gun-Club et le sousdirecteur de l'Observatoire recevaient la dépêche de San Francisco, l'honorable J.-T. Maston éprouvait la plus violente émotion de toute son existence, émotion que ne lui avait même pas procuré l'éclatement de son célèbre canon, et qui faillit, une fois de plus, lui coûter la vie. On sait, en effet, que ce gigantesque instrument avait été établi dans les conditions des réflecteurs appelés « front view » par les Anglais. Cette disposition ne faisait subir qu'une seule réflexion aux objets, et en rendait, conséquemment, la vision plus claire. Il en résultait que J.-T. Maston et Belfast, quand ils observaient, étaient placés à la partie supérieure de l'instrument et non à la partie inférieure. Ils y arrivaient par un escalier tournant, chef-d'œuvre de légèreté, et au-dessous d'eux s'ouvrait ce puits de métal terminé par le miroir métallique, qui mesurait deux cent quatre-vingts pieds de profondeur. Or, c'était sur l'étroite plate-forme disposée au-dessus du télescope, que les deux savants passaient leur existence, maudissant le jour qui dérobait la Lune à leurs regards, et les nuages qui la voilaient obstinément pendant la nuit.
