Pronouns

Just like in English, there are words to replace nouns in Russian. Among nine types of pronouns, the most frequently used are personal, possessive, and interrogative ones.

Personal Russian pronouns

First and second person possessive pronouns are more numerous and change endings according to the gender and number.

Ямой, моя, моё, мои (my/mine)
Мынаш, наша, наше, наши (our/ours)
Тытвой, твоя, твоё, твои (your/yours)
Вываш, ваша, ваше, ваши (your/yours)
Онего (his) - его книга (f), его стол (m), его солнце (n)
Онаеё (her/hers) - ее книга, ее стол, ее солнце
Оноего (its) - его книга, его стол, его солнце
Ониих (their/theirs) - их книга, их стол, их солнце

The most frequently used interrogative pronouns are:

Кто? (who? (animate))

Кто ты такой? Who are you?
Кто они такие? Who are they?

Что? (what? (inanimate))

Что это такое? What’s this?
Что он задумал? What did he come up with?

Куда? (where to?)

Куда ты идешь? Where are you going?
Куда она уехала? Where did she go?

Откуда? (where from?)

Откуда ты идешь? Where are you going from?
Откуда ты родом? Where are you from?

Сколько? (how many/how much?)

Сколько стоит билет? How much is the ticket?
Сколько часов в сутках? How many hours in a day?

Где? (where?)

Где ты его купил? Where did you buy it?
Где он живет? Where does he live?

Как? (how?)

Как ты? How are you?
Как позвонить в полицию? How to call the police?

Какой? (which? What? (asking about quality))

Какой сегодня день? What day is it today?
Какая сегодня погода? What is the weather like today?
Какие книги ты любишь? Which books do you prefer?

There are also demonstrative (этот), determinative (весь), indefinite (кое-кто), and negative (никто) pronouns.

In Russian, a very important reflexive personal pronoun sounds like себя. It can be translated into English as self.

Я себя знаю.
Ты себя недооцениваешь.
Посмотри на себя.

One of the first words Russian babies learn to say is an emphatic pronoun сам. This word is used when you want to underline that you did something yourself (Я сам купил арбуз).
