18 1 Dicebat autem et parabolam ad illos, quoniam oportet semper orare et non deficere, 2 dicens : Judex quidam erat in quadam civitate, qui Deum non timebat, et hominem non reverebatur. 18 1 And he spoke a parable to them, because it is necessary always to pray and not to fail, 2 saying: There was a certain judge in a certain city who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 Vidua autem quædam erat in civitate illa, et veniebat ad eum, dicens : Vindica me de adversario meo. 3 Now there was a certain widow in that city, and she came to him, saying: Avenge me from my adversary. 4 Et nolebat per multum tempus. 4 And he did not want it for a long time. Post hæc autem dixit intra se : Etsi Deum non timeo, nec hominem revereor : 5 tamen quia molesta est mihi hæc vidua, vindicabo illam, ne in novissimo veniens sugillet me. After these things he said within himself: Although I do not fear God, nor do I revere man: 5 nevertheless, because this widow is a trouble to me, I will avenge her, lest in the last time she come and seal me up. 6 Ait autem Dominus : Audite quid judex iniquitatis dicit : 7 Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorum clamantium ad se die ac nocte, et patientiam habebit in illis ? 6 And the Lord said: Hear what the judge of iniquity says: 7 But will God not avenge his chosen ones who cry to him day and night, and will he have patience with them? 8 Dico vobis quia cito faciet vindictam illorum. 8 I tell you that he will quickly avenge them. 9 Dixit autem et ad quosdam qui in se confidebant tamquam justi, et aspernabantur ceteros, parabolam istam : 10 Duo homines ascenderunt in templum ut orarent : unus pharisæus et alter publicanus. 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves as righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray: one a Pharisee and the other a publican. 11 Pharisæus stans, hæc apud se orabat : Deus, gratias ago tibi, quia non sum sicut ceteri hominum : raptores, injusti, adulteri, velut etiam hic publicanus : 12 jejuno bis in sabbato, decimas do omnium quæ possideo. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed this to himself: God, I thank you that I am not like other people: extortionists, unjust, adulterers, like even this publican: 12 I fast twice on the Sabbath, I give tenths of all that I possess. 13 Et publicanus a longe stans, nolebat nec oculos ad cælum levare : sed percutiebat pectus suum, dicens : Deus propitius esto mihi peccatori. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying: God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 Dico vobis, descendit hic justificatus in domum suam ab illo : quia omnis qui se exaltat, humiliabitur, et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur. 14 I tell you, this one went down justified to his house from him: because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

15 Afferebant autem ad illum et infantes, ut eos tangeret. 15 And they brought unto him also little children, that he might touch them. Quod cum viderent discipuli, increpabant illos. 18 Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps, dicens : Magister bone, quid faciens vitam æternam possidebo ? 18 And a certain prince asked him, saying: Good teacher, by doing what shall I inherit eternal life? 19 Dixit autem ei Jesus : Quid me dicis bonum ? 19 And Jesus said to him: Why do you call me good? nemo bonus nisi solus Deus. no one is good but God alone. 20 Mandata nosti : non occides ; non mœchaberis ; non furtum facies ; non falsum testimonium dices ; honora patrem tuum et matrem. 20 You know the commandments: you shall not kill; you shall not be molested; do not commit theft; you will not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother. 21 Qui ait : Hæc omnia custodivi a juventute mea. 21 Who said: I kept all these things from my youth. 22 Quo audito, Jesus ait ei : Adhuc unum tibi deest : omnia quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me. 22 When he heard this, Jesus said to him: You still lack one thing: sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 His ille auditis, contristatus est : quia dives erat valde. 23 When he heard this, he was sad because he was very rich. 24 Videns autem Jesus illum tristem factum, dixit : Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrabunt ! 24 When Jesus saw that sad deed, he said: How difficult it is for those who have money to enter the kingdom of God! 25 facilius est enim camelum per foramen acus transire quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei. 25 For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 26 Et dixerunt qui audiebant : Et quis potest salvus fieri ? 26 And those who were listening said: And who can be saved? 27 Ait illis : Quæ impossibilia sunt apud homines, possibilia sunt apud Deum. 27 He said to them: What is impossible with men is possible with God. 28 Ait autem Petrus : Ecce nos dimisimus omnia et secuti sumus te. 28 And Peter said: Behold, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Qui dixit eis : Amen dico vobis, nemo est qui reliquit domum, aut parentes, aut fratres, aut uxorem, aut filios propter regnum Dei, 30 et non recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore, et in sæculo venturo vitam æternam. 29 He said to them: Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has left home, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 and will not receive much more in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life.

31 Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim, et ait illis : Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et consummabuntur omnia quæ scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis : 32 tradetur enim gentibus, et illudetur, et flagellabitur, et conspuetur : 33 et postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et tertia die resurget. 31 And Jesus took the twelve and said to them: Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all that has been written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. on the day he will rise again. 34 Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt, et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et non intelligebant quæ dicebantur. 34 And they themselves understood nothing of these things, and this word was hidden from them, and they did not understand what was said.

Ipse vero multo magis clamabat : Fili David, miserere mei. But he cried much more: Son of David, have mercy on me. 40 Stans autem Jesus jussit illum adduci ad se. 40 And standing, Jesus ordered him to be brought to him. Et cum appropinquasset, interrogavit illum, 41 dicens : Quid tibi vis faciam ? And when he had come near, he asked him, 41 saying: What do you want me to do for you? At ille dixit : Domine, ut videam. But he said: Lord, let me see. 42 Et Jesus dixit illi : Respice, fides tua te salvum fecit. 42 And Jesus said to him: Look, your faith has saved you. 43 Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. 43 And immediately he saw, and followed him, glorifying God. Et omnis plebs ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo. And when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
