Gospel of Luke, Luc 14

Luc 14

14 1 And it happened when Jesus entered the house of a certain ruler of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, and they were observing him. 2 Et ecce homo quidam hydropicus erat ante illum. 2 And behold, there was a man with dropsy before him. 3 Et respondens Jesus dixit ad legisperitos et pharisæos, dicens : Si licet sabbato curare ? 3 And answering Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to take care on the Sabbath? 4 At illi tacuerunt. Ipse vero apprehensum sanavit eum, ac dimisit. But he, having caught him, healed him, and let him go. 5 Et respondens ad illos dixit : Cujus vestrum asinus, aut bos in puteum cadet, et non continuo extrahet illum die sabbati ? 5 And he answered them and said: Which of you will the ass or the ox fall into the well, and not immediately pull it out on the Sabbath? 6 Et non poterant ad hæc respondere illi. 6 And they could not answer him to these things.

7 And he spoke a parable also to those who were invited, intending how they should choose to recline first, saying to them: 8 When you have been invited to a wedding, do not recline in the first place, lest perhaps you be more honored by him who has invited you. 9 And when the one who called you and him is coming, let him say to you: Give him a place, and then begin to hold the last place with the blush. 10 But when you have been called, go and recline in the last place: so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you: Friend, go up higher. Then you will have glory before those who recline together: 11 because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled: and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

12 And he said to him who had invited: When you make lunch or dinner, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbors; 13 but when you make a feast, call the poor, the weak, the lame, and the blind: 14 and you will be happy, because they do not have to repay you: for you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.

15 Hæc cum audisset quidam de simul discumbentibus, dixit illi : Beatus qui manducabit panem in regno Dei. 15 When one of those reclining together heard this, he said to him: Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. 16 At ipse dixit ei : Homo quidam fecit cœnam magnam, et vocavit multos. 16 But he said to him: A certain man made a great dinner and invited many people. 17 And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to tell those who were invited to come, because everything was already ready. 18 Et cœperunt simul omnes excusare. 18 And they all began to apologize at the same time. The first said to him: I have bought a villa, and I must go out and see it: I beg you, excuse me. 19 Et alter dixit : Juga boum emi quinque, et eo probare illa : rogo te, habe me excusatum. 19 And the other said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and with that to prove them: I beseech thee, excuse me. 20 Et alius dixit : Uxorem duxi, et ideo non possum venire. 20 And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. Then the master of the house, angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city: and bring here the poor, and the weak, and the blind, and the lame. 22 And the servant said: Lord, it is done as you commanded, and there is still room. 24 But I tell you that none of those men who were called will taste my supper.

25 And many multitudes went with him: and he turned and said to them: 26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet also his own soul, he cannot to be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not glorify his cross and comes after me cannot be my disciple. 28 Quis enim ex vobis volens turrim ædificare, non prius sedens computat sumptus, qui necessarii sunt, si habeat ad perficiendum, 29 ne, posteaquam posuerit fundamentum, et non potuerit perficere, omnes qui vident, incipiant illudere ei, 30 dicentes : Quia hic homo cœpit ædificare, et non potuit consummare ? 28 For who among you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the costs which are necessary, if he has to complete it, 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation and is unable to complete it, all who see him begin to mock him, 30 saying: Because this man He began to build, and was not able to finish? 31 Aut quis rex iturus committere bellum adversus alium regem, non sedens prius cogitat, si possit cum decem millibus occurrere ei, qui cum viginti millibus venit ad se ? 31 Or what king, going to commit war against another king, does not first sit down and consider whether he can meet him with ten thousand, who comes to him with twenty thousand? 32 Alioquin adhuc illo longe agente, legationem mittens rogat ea quæ pacis sunt. 32 Otherwise, he is still acting at a great distance, sending an embassy to ask for the things of peace. 33 Therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he possesses cannot be my disciple. 34 Bonum est sal : si autem sal evanuerit, in quo condietur ? 34 Salt is good: but if the salt is gone, in what shall it be seasoned? 35 It is not good for the earth, nor for the dunghill, but it will be thrown outside. Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
