Si la pensée d'une autre mort, d'une autre existence sur laquelle pesait une chape d'épouvante, ne m'avait donné du courage, je n'aurais pu continuer. J'en tremble encore maintenant, mais tant que tout ne fut pas terminé, Dieu en soit remercié, mes nerfs tinrent bon. Si je n'avais pas vu ce soulagement, et cette joie sur le visage de la première, juste avant la dissolution finale, attestant que l'âme avait été libérée, je n'aurais pu poursuivre mon travail de boucher. Je n'aurais pu supporter l'horrible crissement du pieu qui s'abat dans la chair, le sursaut de douleur, les lèvres pleines d'écume sanglante. J'aurais fui terrifié, laissant ma tâche inachevée. Mais c'est terminé ! Il y avait quelque chose de sauvage et de troublant dans ce lieu. Nous pouvions entendre le hurlement lointain des loups. Ils étaient loin, mais le son, même étouffé par la neige qui tombait, était plein de terreur. Je comprenais, à la façon dont le Dr Van Helsing scrutait les alentours, qu'il était à la recherche de quelque lieu stratégique, où nous serions un peu protégés en cas d'attaque.
