1er novembre, soir Rien de nouveau de toute la journée ; nous n'avons rien trouvé qui ressemblât à ce que nous cherchions. Nous remontons maintenant la Bistritza, et si nous nous sommes trompés dans nos conjectures, alors nous aurons laissé passer notre chance. Nous avons examiné tous les navires, grands et petits. Tôt ce matin, un équipage nous a pris pour un navire gouvernemental, et nous a traités en conséquence. Nous y avons vu un moyen de faciliter les choses, aussi à Fundu, là où la Bistritza se jette dans le Sereth, nous nous sommes procuré un drapeau roumain, que nous arborons maintenant ostensiblement. Avec chaque navire que nous avons abordé depuis, cette ruse a fonctionné ; on nous a témoigné une grande déférence, et pas la moindre objection à ce que nous pouvions demander ou faire. On dirait qu'il y a une infinité de ruisseaux descendant des montagnes pour se jeter dans cette rivière, mais comme aucun n'est très large – en ce moment, en tout cas, même s'ils doivent être redoutables en hiver et lors de la fonte des neiges – ils n'ont pas dû présenter un obstacle bien sérieux aux deux cavaliers. J'espère que nous pourrons les voir avant d'atteindre Strasba, car si à ce moment-là nous n'avons pas dépassé le Comte, il sera nécessaire de tenir conseil pour déterminer la suite de notre action. Nous avons entendu dire à Fundu que la steamer avait remonté la Bistritza. Si seulement il ne faisait pas aussi froid. Il y a des signes annonciateurs de neige, et si elle tombe abondamment, elle nous forcera à nous arrêter. Dans ce cas, nous devrons trouver un traîneau, et continuer à la russe. 4 novembre. Aujourd'hui nous avons appris que le steamer avait été retardé par un accident en essayant de remonter les rapides. Les navires Slovaques le font sans problèmes, en s'aidant d'une corde, et de la bonne connaissance qu'ils ont de ces eaux. Certains venaient à peine de passer quelques heures auparavant. Godalming est lui-même un mécanicien amateur, et c'est évidemment lui qui a remis le bateau en état de marche. Finalement, ils ont pu franchir les rapides sans encombre, avec un peu d'aide, et ont repris la chasse. Mais je crains que depuis l'accident, le navire ne soit plus en très bon état : les paysans nous ont dit qu'après avoir repris son chemin sur des eaux plus calmes, il avait continué à s'arrêter régulièrement tant qu'il était en vue. Arrivés à Veresti à midi. Le Professeur m'a dit que ce matin, à l'aube, il a eu énormément de mal à m'hypnotiser, et que tout ce que je pouvais dire était : « noir et silencieux ». Il est parti, maintenant, en quête d'un attelage et de chevaux. Il dit qu'il essaiera plus tard d'acheter d'autres chevaux, afin que nous puissions en changer en chemin. Nous avons un peu plus de 70 miles à parcourir. Le pays est charmant, et très intéressant; si seulement nous nous trouvions dans d'autres circonstances, il serait vraiment délicieux de visiter tout cela. Si Jonathan et moi nous étions tous les deux seuls en voyage ici, quel plaisir cela serait. S'arrêter, voir des gens, apprendre quelque chose de leur vie, et remplir nos esprits et nos mémoires de toute la couleur locale et de tout le pittoresque de ce beau pays sauvage, et de ses gens. Mais hélas ! - Plus tard. Le Dr Van Helsing est revenu. Il a l'attelage et les chevaux; nous devons prendre un diner, et partir dans une heure. La tenancière nous prépare une gigantesque corbeille de provisions; qui semble suffire pour un régiment de soldats. Le Professeur l'encourage, et me murmure que nous ne trouverons peut-être rien à manger pendant toute une semaine. Il a été faire des courses, également, et a fait envoyer à l'auberge un merveilleux assortiment de manteaux de fourrure, de châles, et de toutes sortes de choses chaudes. Il n'y a vraiment aucun risque que nous ayons froid. Nous allons bientôt démarrer. J'ai peur de songer à ce qui peut nous arriver. Nous sommes véritablement entre les mains de Dieu. Lui seul sait ce qui peut advenir, et je le prie, de toute les forces de mon âme triste et humble, de garder mon cher époux… que Jonathan sache, quoi qu'il puisse arriver, que je l'ai aimé et honoré plus que je ne saurais l'exprimer, et que ma suprême et ultime pensée sera toujours pour lui.

Chapitre 27 Journal de Mina Harker, 1er novembre Nous avons voyagé toute la journée, et à vive allure. Les chevaux semblent se rendre compte qu'ils sont bien traités, car ils ne rechignent pas à brûler les étapes le plus vite qu'ils peuvent. Nous en avons changé si souvent, maintenant, en retrouvant à chaque fois le même entrain, que nous sommes encouragés à penser que le voyage sera facile. Le Dr Van Helsing ne parle pas beaucoup; il dit aux fermiers que nous sommes pressés de nous rendre à Bistritz, et il paye bien pour l'échange des chevaux. Nous prenons une soupe chaude, ou du café, ou du thé, et nous repartons. C'est un pays charmant; plein de beautés de toutes sortes, où les gens sont braves, forts, simples, et remplis de qualités agréables. Ils sont très, très superstitieux. A la première maison où nous nous sommes arrêtés, quand la femme qui nous servait a vu la cicatrice sur mon front, elle s'est signé, et a pointé deux doigts vers moi, comme pour repousser le mauvais oeil. Je pense qu'ils se sont donné la peine de mettre une dose supplémentaire d'ail dans nos plats, et je ne peux supporter l'ail… Et cela, même depuis que je prends soin de ne pas ôter mon chapeau ou ma voilette, et que j'ai donc échappé à leur suspicion…Nous voyageons vite, et comme nous n'avons avec nous aucun cocher susceptible de colporter des histoires, nous ne craignons pas le scandale mais je dois dire que la peur du mauvais oeil nous poursuivra longtemps. Le professeur semble infatigable; de toute la journée il ne prend aucun repos, bien qu'il me fasse dormir de longs moments. A l'heure du crépuscule, il m'a hypnotisée, et m'a dit que j'avais répondu comme d'habitude : « obscurité, clapotis de l'eau et bois craquant »; donc, notre ennemi est toujours sur la rivière. J'ai peur de penser à Jonathan, et pourtant, il me semble que je n'ai plus de craintes, ni pour lui ni pour moi. J'écris ces lignes pendant que nous attendons, dans une ferme, que les chevaux soient préparés. Le Dr Van Helsing s'est endormi. Le pauvre, il paraît bien fatigué, vieux et gris, mais sa bouche est aussi ferme que celle d'un conquérant; même dans son sommeil il semble instinctivement déterminé. Quand nous aurons franchi quelque distance, je dois le forcer à se reposer et à me laisser les rênes. Je lui dirai que nous avons des jours de voyage devant nous, qu'il doit éviter de craquer, et ménager ses forces pour le moment où elles seront nécessaires… Tout est prêt, nous partons incessamment. 2 novembre, matin J'ai obtenu ce que je souhaitais, et nous avons conduit l'attelage à tour de rôles toute la nuit; et maintenant le jour nous éclaire, lumineux mais froid. Il y a quelque chose qui pèse étrangement dans l'air - je dis « qui pèse » car je ne trouve pas de meilleur mot; je veux dire que cela nous oppresse tous les deux. Il fait très froid, et ce n'est que grâce à nos chaudes fourrures que nous nous sentons bien. A l'Aube Van Helsing m'a hypnotisée; à ce qu'il m'a rapporté, j'ai dit « obscurité, craquement de bois, et eaux grondantes », donc la rivière doit être en train de changer tandis qu'il la remonte. J'espère vraiment que mon amour n'est pas en danger - pas plus que nécessaire; mais nous sommes entre les mains de Dieu. 2 novembre, nuit

Nous avons roulé toute la journée. La contrée devient de plus en en plus sauvage, et les immenses contreforts des Carpathes, qui à Veresti nous paraissaient si éloignés et si bas à l'horizon, semblent maintenant se rassembler devant nous pour nous faire rempart. Nous avons tous les deux un état d'esprit positif - je pense que nous faisons, chacun de notre côté, un effort pour rassurer l'autre; et de cette manière nous nous rassurons nous-mêmes. Le Dr Van Helsing a dit que nous atteindrions la Passe de Borgo pendant la matinée. Les maisons se font de plus en plus rares, et le Professeur dit que les derniers chevaux que nous avons pris devront peut-être continuer jusqu'au bout avec nous, car nous ne pourrons peut-être pas en changer. Nous en avons pris deux supplémentaires, en plus des deux que nous avons changés, si bien que nous avons maintenant un attelage de quatre. Ces chers chevaux sont patients et bons, et ne nous donnent aucun souci. Nous ne sommes pas gênés par les autres voyageurs - et ainsi, même moi je peux conduire. Nous traverserons la Passe de jour; nous ne voulons pas arriver avant. Aussi nous ne nous pressons pas, et nous veillons à prendre un repos suffisant, à tour de rôle. Oh, qu'est-ce que demain nous apportera ? Nous devons fouiller ce lieu où mon pauvre mari a tant souffert. Que Dieu nous permette de suivre le bon chemin, et qu'Il daigne garder mon mari et ceux qui nous sont chers à tous les deux, et qui se trouvent en si grand péril. Quant à moi, je ne suis pas digne de son intérêt. Hélas !
