Nous sommes seulement à vingt-quatre heures des Dardanelles, à la vitesse du Czarina Catherine depuis son départ de Londres. Le navire devrait arriver au matin, mais comme il est impossible qu'il entre dans le port avant ce moment-là, nous allons nous coucher très tôt. Elle respirait naturellement, et elle semblait si tranquille, si paisible, que nous reconnûmes que le sommeil était pour elle préférable à tout autre état. Ce retard du Comte à Varna avait convaincu chacun d'entre nous que les choses ne se produiraient pas comme nous l'espérions, et nous attendions seulement de connaître la nature de ce changement. Mais quoi qu'il en soit, ce fut quand même une surprise. Je suppose que la nature se fonde sur des bases tellement optimistes que nous pensons toujours au fond de nous-même que les choses se produiront comme elles devraient se produire, et non pas comme nous savons qu'elles vont se produire. Le transcendantalisme est un phare pour les anges, même si pour l'homme il n'est qu'un feu-follet. C'était une expérience étrange, et chacun d'entre nous la vécut différemment. Van Helsing leva la main au-dessus de sa tête pendant un moment, comme s'il adressait un reproche au tout-puissant, mais il ne dit pas un mot, et quelques secondes plus tard il se releva, son visage ayant retrouvé toute sa fermeté.
