Lord Godalming est allé au consulat pour voir si un télégramme à son adresse n'y était pas arrivé, tandis que les autres ont gagné cet hôtel – « l'Odessus ». Il se peut que le voyage ait connu quelques incidents ; toutefois j'étais trop impatient d'arriver pour m'en soucier. Jusqu'à ce que le Czarina Catherine arrive au port, rien dans le vaste monde ne pourra présenter le moindre intérêt pour moi. Dieu merci ! Mina va bien, et semble reprendre des forces et des couleurs. Elle dort énormément ; pendant le voyage, elle a pratiquement dormi tout le temps. Avant le lever et le coucher du soleil, toutefois, elle est tout à fait alerte et éveillée, et c'est devenu une habitude pour Van Helsing de l'hypnotiser à ce moment-là. Au début, il fallait fournir un effort, et il devait accomplir de nombreuses passes, mais maintenant, elle semble s'abandonner immédiatement, comme par habitude, et il n'a presque rien à faire. Il a quatre télégrammes, un pour chaque jour depuis que nous sommes partis, et tous avec la même information : le Czarina Catherine n'a été aperçu nulle part à la connaissance de la Lloyd's. Lord Godalming a pris des arrangements avant de quitter Londres afin que son agent lui envoie chaque jour un télégramme pour lui dire si le navire avait été vu quelque part. Il devait recevoir un message chaque jour même si le navire n'avait pas été vu, afin d'être certain qu'on restait vigilant à l'autre bout de la ligne.

Nous avons dîné et sommes allés nous coucher tôt. Demain, nous devons voir le Vice-Consul, et nous débrouiller, si nous pouvons, pour monter à bord du navire dès son arrivée. Van Helsing dit que nous aurons toutes nos chances si nous pouvons monter à bord entre le lever et le coucher du soleil. Le Conte, même s'il prend la forme d'une chauve-souris, ne peut franchir une eau vive de sa propre volonté ; en conséquence il ne peut donc quitter le navire. Et comme il ne peut quitter sa forme humaine sans éveiller les soupçons – ce qu'il doit naturellement éviter – il doit rester dans sa caisse. Donc si nous pouvons monter sur le navire après le lever du soleil, alors il sera à notre merci, car nous pourrons ouvrir la caisse et nous occuper de lui, comme nous l'avons fait pour la pauvre Lucy, avant qu'il ne s'éveille. Il n'aura pas à attendre beaucoup de pitié de nous. Nous pensons que nous n'aurons pas de difficultés avec les fonctionnaires ou avec les marins. Dieu merci ! Voici un pays où la corruption peut tout accomplir, et nous sommes très bien pourvus en matière d'argent. Nous devons seulement nous assurer que le navire n'entre pas au port entre le coucher et le lever du soleil, sans que nous en soyons avertis, et alors nous n'aurons rien à craindre. Le Dieu Argent règlera cela, je crois bien ! 16 octobre. Mina nous rapporte toujours la même chose : vagues, ténèbres et vents favorables. Nous sommes évidemment dans les temps, et lorsqu'on annoncera la Czarina Catherine, nous serons prêts. Comme le navire doit passer les Dardanelles, nous sommes certains d'avoir de ses nouvelles. 17 octobre. Tout est maintenant parfaitement organisé, je pense, pour souhaiter la bienvenue au Comte à son retour de voyage. Godalming a dit aux armateurs qu'il pensait que la caisse envoyée depuis l'étranger pouvait contenir quelque chose qui avait été volé à un de ses amis, et il a obtenu une demi-autorisation d'ouvrir la caisse à ses propres risques. Le propriétaire du navire lui a remis un document recommandant au capitaine de lui accorder toute facilité pour faire tout ce qu'il jugera bon à bord du navire, et il dispose aussi d'une autorisation similaire pour son agent de Varna. Nous avons vu cet agent, qui a été fortement impressionné par les manières aimables de Godalming à son égard, et nous sommes tous pleinement convaincus qu'il fera tout ce qu'il pourra pour aider à la réalisation de nos projets. Nous avons déjà prévu ce que nous ferons si nous parvenons à ouvrir la caisse. Si le Comte s'y trouve, Van Helsing et Seward lui couperont la tête sans attendre et lui planteront un pieu dans le cœur. Morris, Godalming et moi-même empêcherons quiconque d'intervenir, même si nous devons pour cela utiliser les armes que nous avons préparées à cet effet. Le Professeur dit que si nous pouvons disposer ainsi du corps du Comte, il tombera en poussière peu après. Dans ce cas, il n'y aura aucune preuve contre nous, si nous venions à être soupçonnés de meurtre. Mais même si ce n'était pas le cas, nous assumerions nos actes, et peut-être un jour ce manuscrit lui-même pourrait-il sauver certains d'entre nous de la corde. Quant à moi, c'est avec gratitude que je saisirai cette opportunité si elle s'offre à moi. Nous avons l'intention de remuer ciel et terre pour atteindre notre objectif. Nous nous sommes assurés auprès de certains fonctionnaires que dès que le Czarina Catherine sera en vue, nous en serons informés par un messager spécial. 24 octobre. Toute une semaine d'attente. Journal du Docteur Seward 25 octobre. Comme mon phonographe me manque ! Ecrire un journal à l'aide d'un crayon est vraiment agaçant, mais Van Helsing affirme qu'il le faut. Nous étions tous très excités hier quand Godalming a reçu son télégramme de la Lloyd's. Je sais maintenant ce que ressentent les hommes au milieu de la bataille lorsque retentit le signal de l'action. Seule Mrs. Harker ne montre aucun signe d'émotion. Après tout, ce n'est pas surprenant, car nous avons pris de grandes précautions afin qu'elle n'en sache rien, et nous nous sommes efforcés de ne montrer aucun signe d'excitation lorsque nous étions en sa présence. Avant, je suis certain qu'elle s'en serait rendue compte, quelles que soient les précautions prises pour lui dissimuler la chose, mais à cet égard elle a beaucoup changé ces trois dernières semaines. La léthargie la gagne, et même si elle semble forte et bien portante, et retrouve un peu de ses couleurs, Van Helsing et moi-même ne sommes pas satisfaits. Nous parlons souvent d'elle, mais nous n'avons toutefois encore rien dit aux autres. Cela briserait le cœur de ce pauvre Harker – et certainement aussi ses nerfs – s'il savait que nous avons le moindre doute sur ce sujet. Van Helsing surveille très attentivement les dents de la jeune femme, à ce qu'il me dit, quand elle est sous influence hypnotique ; il prétend que tant qu'elles ne commencent pas à devenir plus pointues, il n'y a pas de risque de changement dangereux en elle. Si cela devait arriver, il serait nécessaire de prendre des mesures ! … Nous savons tous deux quelles devraient être ces mesures, même si nous ne partageons pas ces réflexions à haute voix. Aucun de nous ne reculera devant cette tâche – quelque affreuse qu'elle puisse être.
