Le Comte avait un objectif bien à lui quand il lui a donné ce que Van Helsing a appelé le « Baptême de sang du vampire ». Eh bien, il peut exister des poisons qui se distillent à partir de choses bénéfiques… en ces temps où l'existence des ptomaïnes reste un mystère, nous ne devons nous étonner de rien ! Je ne sais qu'une chose : si mon instinct ne me trompe pas à propos des silences de la pauvre Mrs. Harker, alors il y a une terrible difficulté, un danger inconnu, dans le travail qui nous attend. La réaction des autres en apprenant cette décision m'a aussi déconcerté : la dernière fois que nous avions évoqué le sujet, nous étions tombés d'accord sur le fait qu'il ne devait plus y avoir la moindre dissimulation entre nous. Mina dort maintenant, calmement et sereinement comme un petit enfant. Elle sourit et son visage rayonne de bonheur. Dieu merci, il y a encore de tels moments pour elle. J'en remercie Dieu, car cela lui permet au moins d'oublier ses soucis. Peut-être suivrai-je son exemple comme je l'ai fait pour sa bonne humeur de ce soir. Je vais essayer.
