Quand ils se furent retirés, Quincey, Godalming et moi décidâmes que nous monterions la garde chacun notre tour, pour veiller à la sécurité de la pauvre femme accablée. La première garde échut à Quincey, afin que les autres puissent aller se reposer dans leur lit aussi vite que possible. Godalming s'est déjà couché, car il a le deuxième quart. Et maintenant que mon travail est fini, je vais y aller, moi aussi. Journal de Jonathan Harker Nuit du 3 au 4 octobre, un peu avant minuit Je crus que la journée d'hier ne finirait jamais. Il y avait en moi un désir ardent de dormir, par une sorte d'absurde espoir qu'à mon réveil, je trouverais les choses changées, nécessairement pour le mieux. Avant de nous séparer, nous discutâmes de notre prochaine étape, mais nous n'arrivâmes à aucune conclusion. Tout ce que nous savions, c'était qu'il restait une boîte de terre, et que seul le Comte savait où elle se trouvait. S'il choisissait de demeurer caché, il pouvait déjouer nos plans pendant des années; et entre temps ! … la pensée est trop horrible, je n'ose me la formuler même à présent. Tout ce que je sais, c'est ceci : s'il y eut jamais une femme dotée de toutes les perfections, il s'agit de mon pauvre cher amour. Je l'aime un millier de fois plus, depuis la douce compassion qu'elle a témoignée hier soir, une compassion qui a rendu ma propre haine pour le monstre presque méprisable. Sans doute la mort d'une telle créature ne sera pas une grande perte pour la Création. Ceci représente un espoir pour moi. Nous sommes tous en train de partir à la dérive, entrainés vers des écueils, et la foi est notre seul ancrage. Dieu merci ! Mina est endormie, d'un sommeil sans rêve. J'ai peur de ce à quoi elle peut rêver, avec tant d'atroces souvenirs pour nourrir ses cauchemars. Elle n'a pas été aussi calme, à ma connaissance, depuis le coucher du soleil. Alors, pendant un moment, son visage se détendit comme une terre où vient le printemps après les giboulées de mars. Je crus à cet instant que c'était à cause de la douceur des rougeoiements du crépuscule sur son visage, mais d'une certaine façon je savais qu'il y avait là une signification plus profonde à ce phénomène. Je n'ai pas sommeil, moi-même, bien que je sois épuisé - mortellement épuisé. Mais je dois, quoi qu'il en soit, essayer de dormir, car il faut penser à demain. Il n'y aura pas de réel repos pour moi avant que … Plus tard J'ai dû m'endormir, car j'ai été réveillé par Mina, qui s'était assise dans le lit, l'air affolé. Elle soupira et l'ombre d'un sourire passa sur son pauvre visage pâle, comme elle passait les bras autour de moi et me disait doucement : « Oh, que Dieu soit remercié de nous avoir envoyé ces hommes braves et bons ! » Avec un soupir elle se recoucha et s'endormit. J'écris ces lignes car je n'ai toujours pas sommeil, même si je sais que je dois essayer à nouveau de dormir. 4 octobre, matin J'ai été réveillé une fois encore par Mina pendant la nuit. Cette fois nous avions tous les deux bien dormi, puisque les lueurs grises de l'aube accusaient la forme rectangulaire des fenêtres, et que la flamme du gaz ressemblait davantage à une petite tache qu'à un large disque de lumière. Le Professeur fit à nouveau quelques passes, puis s'arrêta, et je pus voir que son front ruisselait de sueur. Mina ouvrit les yeux, mais elle ne semblait pas être la même femme. Elle avait un regard lointain, et sa voix avait un accent tristement rêveur qui était nouveau pour moi. Levant la main pour imposer le silence, le Professeur se déplaça jusqu'à moi pour laisser entrer les autres. Mina ne parut pas se rendre compte de leur présence. Son immobilité fut brisée par la voix de Van Helsing, qui parlait d'un ton si bas qu'il ne dérangeait pas le cours de ses pensées : « Où êtes-vous ? » La réponse fut donnée d'un ton très neutre. « Je ne sais pas. Le sommeil n'a pas de lieu propre. » Pendant plusieurs minutes ce fut le silence. Mina était assise, rigide, et le Professeur était debout, les yeux fixés sur elle; quant à nous autres, nous osions à peine respirer. La pièce était en train de s'éclairer; sans lâcher Mina des yeux, le Dr Van Helsing se déplaça vers moi pour me faire signe de tirer les rideaux. Je m'exécutai, et le jour sembla nous inonder. Un rayon rouge frappa, et une lumière rosée parut se répandre à travers la pièce. A cet instant, le Professeur reprit la parole: « Où êtes-vous à présent ? » La réponse fut rêveuse, mais volontaire, comme si Mina était en train d'interpréter quelque chose. Je l'avais déjà entendue utiliser la même intonation lorsqu'elle était en train de déchiffrer des notes sténographiées. « Je l'ignore.
