Le Comte, à nouveau, s'excusa : il avait dîné lorsqu'il était dehors. Mais il s'assit comme la nuit précédente, et discuta avec moi tandis que je mangeais. Après le souper, je fumai, comme la veille, et le Comte resta avec moi, me posant des questions sur tous les sujets imaginables, heure après heure. Il se faisait vraiment très tard, mais je ne le lui fis pas remarquer, car je me sentais obligé d'exaucer tous les désirs de mon hôte. Je n'avais pas sommeil : mon repas de la veille m'avait revigoré. Toutefois je ne pus m'empêcher d'éprouver ce frisson que chacun ressent à l'approche de l'aube. L'aube est d'une certaine façon comme une marée nouvelle. On dit que ceux qui sont mourants expirent souvent à l'approche de l'aube, ou au changement de marée, et tous ceux qui, ayant dû rester à leur poste alors qu'ils étaient épuisés, ont vécu cette expérience, voudront bien me croire. Soudain, nous entendîmes le chant du coq déchirer l'air tranquille du matin d'une façon surnaturelle. Le Comte Dracula, se levant soudain, me dit : « Eh bien, voici le matin à nouveau ! Je suis impardonnable de vous faire veiller si longtemps. Vous devez vous efforcer de rendre moins intéressantes nos conversations sur mon nouveau pays, l'Angleterre, que je chéris déjà, afin que nous ne laissions pas ainsi filer le temps ! » Et, s'inclinant courtoisement, il me quitta sans attendre. Alors je refermai les rideaux, et m'attelai au compte-rendu de cette journée. 8 mai Je commençais à penser qu'en écrivant ce journal, je m'étais trop dispersé, mais je suis heureux maintenant d'être entré dans le détail dès le début, car il y a en ce lieu, et en tout ce qu'il abrite, quelque chose de si étrange, que je ne puis m'empêcher d'être inquiet. J'aimerais en sortir sain et sauf, ou n'y être jamais entré. Peut-être cette étrange existence nocturne a-t-elle des effets sur moi, si seulement ce n'était que cela ! Si j'avais quelqu'un à qui parler, je pourrais tout supporter, mais il n'y a personne. Je ne peux parler qu'au Comte, et lui… ! J'ai bien peur d'être la seule âme vivante ici. Soyons prosaïque et factuel : cela m'aidera à tenir le choc, sans me laisser gouverner par mon imagination. Sinon, je suis perdu. Voici donc ce qui s'est passé, du moins me semble-t-il. Je ne dormis que quelques heures, après m'être mis au lit. Sentant que je ne pourrais plus dormir, je me levai. J'avais accroché mon miroir à la fenêtre, et je commençais juste à me raser. Soudain, je sentis une main sur mon épaule, et j'entendis la voix du Comte : « Bonjour. » Je sursautai : j'étais très surpris de ne pas l'avoir vu, car le miroir me permettait de voir l'intégralité de la pièce derrière moi. En sursautant, je me coupai légèrement, mais je ne m'en rendis pas compte sur le moment. Après avoir rendu au Comte son salut, je me retournai vers le miroir pour essayer de comprendre comment j'avais pu me tromper à ce point. Cette fois, il n'y avait pas d'erreur possible, puisque l'homme était tout près de moi : je pouvais le voir par-dessus mon épaule. Mais il n'y avait aucun reflet de lui dans le miroir ! Je pouvais voir toute la pièce derrière moi, mais aucun être humain, à part moi-même. C'était déconcertant, et après tant de choses étranges, cela renforçait encore ce vague sentiment de malaise que j'éprouvais toujours en présence du Comte. Mais à ce moment, je vis que la coupure avait quelque peu saigné : le sang coulait sur mon menton. Je posai le rasoir, et me retournai à la recherche de ce qui pourrait me servir de compresse. Quand le Comte vit mon visage, ses yeux se mirent à briller d'une fureur démoniaque, et soudain il me saisit à la gorge. Je me reculai, et ses mains touchèrent le chapelet auquel était suspendu le crucifix. Son attitude changea immédiatement, et sa fureur disparut si vite qu'il était difficile d'imaginer qu'il ait pu se mettre dans un tel état. « Prenez garde » dit-il, « Prenez garde à la façon dont vous vous coupez. C'est plus dangereux que vous ne le pensez dans ce pays. » Puis, saisissant le miroir, il poursuivit : « Et c'est à cet objet de malheur que vous le devez ! Hors de ma vue ! » Et, ouvrant la lourde fenêtre d'un seul geste de sa main puissante, il lança le miroir, qui se brisa en mille morceaux sur les pierres de la cour en contrebas. Puis il se retira sans un mot. C'est très ennuyeux, car je ne vois pas comment je vais pouvoir me raser, sauf si je puis utiliser le boitier de ma montre, ou le fond de mon nécessaire à barbe, qui, heureusement, est fait de métal. Quand je retournai dans la pièce où je prenais mes repas, le petit déjeuner était servi, mais je ne pus trouver le Comte nulle part. Je déjeunai donc seul. Il est étrange que je ne l'aie vu jusqu'ici ni manger, ni boire. Ce doit être un homme très particulier ! Après le petit déjeuner, j'ai exploré quelque peu le château. Je suis sorti dans l'escalier, et j'ai découvert une pièce orientée au sud. La vue était magnifique, et de là où j'étais, je pouvais en profiter pleinement. Le château se trouve juste au bord d'un

terrible précipice. Une pierre tombant par la fenêtre chuterait de mille pieds avant de toucher quoi que ce soit ! Aussi loin que le regard peut porter, il n'y a qu'un océan d'arbres, avec par endroits une rupture profonde là où se trouve un gouffre. Ca et là, on peut voir des rubans d'argent, là où les rivières serpentent au fond de gorges encaissées à travers les forêts. Mais je n'ai pas le cœur de décrire ces beautés, car après avoir contemplé cette vue, j'ai poursuivi mon exploration : des portes, des portes, des portes partout, et toutes fermées à clé ou au verrou. Il n'y a aucune sortie praticable, à part les fenêtres qui s'ouvrent dans les murs. Le château est une véritable prison, et j'y suis prisonnier !

Chapitre 3 Journal de Jonathan Harker - suite Lorsque je réalisai que j'étais prisonnier, je fus envahi par une sorte de frénésie. Je dévalai et remontai les marches, essayant toutes les portes, et regardant par toutes les fenêtres que je pus trouver, mais rapidement un sentiment d'impuissance me submergea. Quand j'y réfléchis quelques heures plus tard, je me dis que j'étais devenu réellement fou pendant un moment, car je me suis comporté comme un rat pris au piège. Toutefois, lorsque j'eus acquis la conviction qu'il n'y avait aucun espoir, je m'assis tranquillement – je n'avais jamais été aussi tranquille de toute ma vie – et je réfléchis à la meilleure conduite à adopter. Je réfléchis encore maintenant, et je ne suis arrivé à aucune conclusion définitive. Je ne suis sûr que d'une chose : il ne sert à rien de faire part au Comte de mes sentiments. Il sait mieux que personne que je suis prisonnier, et comme il en est responsable et a sans aucun doute ses propres motivations, il ne ferait que me mentir si je lui exposais simplement les faits. Jusqu'ici, mon seul plan sera de conserver pour moi ce que je sais et ce que je ressens, et de garder les yeux ouverts. Soit je suis trompé, comme un petit enfant, par mes propres peurs, soit je suis réellement dans une situation désespérée, et si tel est le cas, j'ai besoin, et je vais avoir besoin, de toute mon intelligence pour m'en sortir. Je venais à peine d'arriver à cette conclusion, quand j'entendis la grande porte d'entrée se refermer, et compris que le Comte était rentré. Il ne vint pas tout de suite à la bibliothèque, aussi je retournai prudemment dans ma chambre, où je le trouvai occupé à faire le lit. C'était étrange, mais cela ne faisait que confirmer ce que je pensais depuis longtemps : il n'y avait aucun domestique dans le château. Quand plus tard je le vis, par la porte entrouverte, dresser la table dans la salle à manger, j'en fus certain, car s'il exécute lui-même ces tâches, c'est bien la preuve qu'il n'y a personne d'autre pour le faire. Cette pensée me fit frissonner : s'il n'y avait personne d'autre dans le château, alors le cocher de la voiture qui m'avait amené ici ne pouvait être que le Comte lui-même. C'est terrible, car s'il en est ainsi, cela signifie qu'il peut contrôler les loups, comme il l'avait fait alors, d'un simple mouvement de la main. Et pourquoi tous ces gens à Bistritz et dans la diligence avaient-ils si peur pour moi ? Pourquoi m'avait-on donné le crucifix, l'ail, la rose sauvage, les cendres ? Y a-t-il quelque chose dans l'essence de l'objet lui-même, ou est-il un medium qui m'aide à me remémorer ces témoignages de sympathie et de réconfort ? Plus tard, si j'en ai la possibilité, j'examinerai la question et essaierai de me faire une opinion. En attendant, il me faut apprendre tout ce que je peux sur le Comte Dracula ; cela me permettra peut-être de mieux le comprendre. Peut-être pourrai-je l'amener à parler de lui ce soir. Mais je dois être très prudent, pour ne pas éveiller ses soupçons. Minuit – J'ai eu une longue conversation avec le Comte.
