Je commençais à me frotter les yeux et à me pincer pour voir si j'étais bien éveillé. Tout cela me semblait être un horrible cauchemar, et je m'attendais à m'éveiller soudain, à me retrouver à la maison, l'aurore éclairant la fenêtre, comme cela m'arrivait parfois au petit matin après une journée de travail excessif. Mais ma chair réagissait au pincement, et mes yeux ne me trompaient pas. J'étais bel et bien éveillé et au milieu des Carpathes. Tout ce que je pouvais faire, c'était patienter, et attendre le matin. Au moment précis où j'arrivai à cette conclusion, j'entendis un pas lourd s'approcher derrière la lourde porte, et je vis, à travers une fente du bois, un rayon de lumière. Puis il y eut un bruit de chaînes, et de gros verrous que l'on tirait. On tourna une clé dans la serrure, avec un grincement qui indiquait qu'elle n'avait pas servi depuis longtemps, puis la porte fut ouverte. A l'intérieur se tenait un grand vieillard, soigneusement rasé, à part une longue moustache blanche, et habillé de noir de la tête aux pieds, sans la moindre tache de couleur sur sa personne. Il tenait à la main une antique lampe d'argent, dans laquelle la flamme brûlait sans protection aucune, projetant de grandes ombres frémissantes tandis qu'elle vacillait dans le courant d'air. Le vieil homme me fit de sa main droite un geste plein de courtoisie, disant dans un anglais excellent, mais avec une étrange intonation : « Soyez le bienvenue dans ma demeure ! Entrez librement et de votre plein gré ! » Il ne fit pas un pas dans ma direction, mais resta là debout comme une statue, comme si son geste de bienvenue l'avait changé en pierre. Mais à l'instant précis où j'eus franchi le seuil, il bondit vers moi, et, me tendant la main, saisit la mienne avec une force qui me fit grimacer de douleur. Sa main était aussi froide que la glace – c'était plus la main d'un mort que celle d'un homme vivant. Puis il répéta : « Bienvenue dans ma demeure. Entrez librement, soyez sans crainte, et laissez ici un peu du bonheur que vous amènerez avec vous ! » La force de sa poignée de main me rappelait tellement celle du cocher, dont je n'avais pas vu le visage, que pendant un moment je me demandai si je ne parlais pas à la même personne. Pour m'en assurer, je lui demandai :

« Comte Dracula ? » et il s'inclina courtoisement en me répondant : « Je suis Dracula, et je vous souhaite la bienvenue en ma maison, Mister Harker. Entrez, l'air de la nuit est froid, et vous devez avoir besoin de dîner et de vous reposer ». Tandis qu'il parlait, il pendit la lampe à un crochet fixé au mur, et sortit chercher mes bagages. Il les avait posés dans l'entrée avant que j'aie pu l'en empêcher. Je protestai, mais il insista : « Non, Sir, vous êtes mon invité. Il est tard, et mes serviteurs sont couchés. Laissez-moi veiller moi-même à votre confort. » Il insista pour porter mes valises le long du couloir, puis prit un grand escalier en colimaçon, puis à nouveau un large passage. Nos pas résonnaient lourdement sur le sol de pierre. Une fois arrivé au bout, il ouvrit une lourde porte, et je fus heureux de voir une chambre bien éclairée, où une table était dressée pour le souper, avec un grand feu de rondins qui flamboyait et pétillait dans la vaste cheminée. Le Comte s'arrêta, posa mes bagages, ferma la porte, puis, traversant la pièce, ouvrit une autre porte qui menait dans une petite pièce octogonale éclairée par une simple lampe, et visiblement sans la moindre fenêtre d'aucune sorte. La traversant, il ouvrit une autre porte, et me fit signe d'entrer. C'était une vue bien réconfortante, car il s'agissait d'une grande chambre à coucher, bien éclairée, et chauffée par un autre feu de bois, allumé depuis peu, mais qui ronflait déjà dans la grande cheminée. Ce fut encore le Comte lui-même qui amena mes bagages dans la chambre, puis il se retira, me disant au moment de fermer la porte : « Après votre voyage, vous aurez certainement besoin de vous rafraîchir et de faire votre toilette. Je pense que vous trouverez tout ce dont vous avez besoin. Quand vous serez prêt, venez dans l'autre pièce, où vous attend votre souper. La lumière, la chaleur, ainsi que l'accueil courtois du Comte, avaient dissipé tous mes doutes et toutes mes peurs. Ayant retrouvé mon état normal, je m'aperçus que je mourais littéralement de faim, et donc, après une rapide toilette, je passai dans l'autre pièce. J'y trouvai le souper déjà servi. Mon hôte, qui se tenait à côté de la grande cheminée, s'appuyant contre la pierre, désigna la table d'un geste courtois, et me dit : « Je vous en prie, asseyez-vous et soupez comme vous l'entendez. Vous m'excuserez de ne pas me joindre à vous, mais j'ai déjà dîné, et je ne soupe point. » Je lui tendis la lettre cachetée de Mr. Hawkins, qui devait me servir d'introduction. Il l'ouvrit et la lut attentivement, puis, avec un charmant sourire, il me la donna pour que je la lise à mon tour. Un passage au moins, me procura un intense plaisir : « Je suis au regret de vous informer qu'une attaque de goutte, maladie dont je souffre constamment, m'empêche absolument d'entreprendre le moindre voyage pendant un certain temps, mais je suis heureux de pouvoir vous envoyer un remplaçant efficace, en qui je mets toute ma confiance. C'est un homme jeune, plein d'énergie et de talent à sa façon, et tout à fait digne de confiance. Il est calme et discret, et a pour ainsi dire atteint l'âge d'homme à mon service. Il sera là pour vous assister durant son séjour, et suivra vos instructions en toutes matières. » Le Comte lui-même s'approcha, et souleva le couvercle d'un plat, où je découvris un excellent poulet rôti, qui, avec quelque fromage et salade, et une bouteille de vieux Tokay, dont je bus deux verres, constitua mon souper. Pendant que je mangeais, le Comte me posa beaucoup de questions sur mon voyage, et au fur et à mesure, je lui narrai toutes mes expériences. Ce faisant, je terminai mon souper, et, à la demande de mon hôte, je tirai un fauteuil auprès du feu, et commençai à fumer un cigare qu'il m'offrit, s'excusant lui-même de ne pas fumer. J'avais maintenant une occasion de l'observer, et lui trouvai une physionomie vraiment extraordinaire. Son visage était aquilin, très aquilin – le nez fin saillant au-dessus de narines particulièrement arquées, un front haut et bombé, les cheveux rares aux tempes, mais abondants partout ailleurs. Ses sourcils étaient très épais, se rejoignant presque au-

dessus du nez, et tellement broussailleux qu'ils semblaient presque boucler. La bouche, du moins ce que je pouvais en voir sous l'abondante moustache, arborait une expression plutôt cruelle, avec des dents blanches étonnamment pointues, qui s'avançaient au-dessus de ses lèvres. La rougeur remarquable de celles-ci dénotait une étonnante vitalité pour un homme de cet âge. Quant au reste, ses oreilles étaient très pâles, et extrêmement pointues ; le menton était large et fort, et les joues fermes bien que fines. Toute sa personne donnait une impression d'extraordinaire pâleur. Jusqu'ici j'avais pu observer le dos de ses mains tandis qu'elles reposaient sur ses genoux à la lueur du feu, et elles m'avaient semblé plutôt fines et blanches, mais les voyant de plus près, je ne pus manquer de remarquer qu'elles étaient plutôt grossières, larges, avec des doigts courts. Chose étrange, il y avait des poils au milieu de ses paumes. Les ongles étaient longs et fins, et taillés en pointe. Quand le Comte se pencha vers moi et que ses mains me touchèrent, je ne pus réprimer un frisson. Peut-être avait-il mauvaise haleine, mais je fus envahi par une horrible sensation de malaise, qu'il me fut absolument impossible de cacher. Le Comte, s'en étant évidemment aperçu, se retira, et, avec une sorte de sombre sourire, qui montra plus que jamais ses dents protubérantes, alla regagner sa place au coin du feu. Nous restâmes tous deux sans parler pendant un moment, et tandis que je regardais la fenêtre, je vis les premières lueurs de l'aube. C'était comme si un lourd silence pesait sur toute chose. Pourtant en tendant l'oreille, j'entendis les hurlements de nombreux loups qui venaient du fond de la vallée. Les yeux du Comte s'illuminèrent, et il dit : « Ecoutez-les – les enfants de la nuit. Quelle musique ils font ! » Et voyant, je suppose, quelque étonnement sur mon visage, il ajouta : « Ah, Sir, vous autres citadins ne pouvez pas ressentir les émotions du chasseur. Puis il se leva et ajouta : « Mais vous devez être fatigué. Votre chambre est prête, et demain vous pourrez dormir aussi longtemps que vous le souhaiterez. Je serai sorti jusque dans l'après-midi, alors dormez bien et faites de beaux rêves ! » Et avec une courtoise révérence, il ouvrit lui-même la porte de la pièce octogonale, et j'entrai dans ma chambre… Je suis environné de prodiges. Je doute, j'ai peur, d'étranges pensées me viennent, que je n'ose confier à mon âme. Dieu me garde, ne serait-ce que pour le salut de ceux qui me sont chers ! 7 mai A nouveau, c'est le petit matin, mais je me suis reposé et ai profité des dernières vingt-quatre heures. J'ai dormi tard aujourd'hui, et ne me suis levé que lorsque je l'ai décidé. Après m'être habillé, je me suis rendu dans la pièce où nous avions soupé, et y ai trouvé un petit déjeuner qui m'attendait, le café posé sur l'âtre pour rester au chaud. Il y avait sur la table une carte sur laquelle je pus lire : « Je dois m'absenter pour un temps. Ne m'attendez pas. D. ». Je m'installai donc et profitai de cet agréable repas. Cela fait, je cherchai une sonnette, afin de faire savoir aux serviteurs que j'avais terminé, mais je n'en trouvai aucune. Il y a des déficiences certaines dans l'organisation de la maison, compte tenu de la richesse extraordinaire dont je suis entouré. Le service de table est en or, et si délicatement travaillé qu'il doit avoir une valeur immense. Les rideaux, les tissus qui couvent les fauteuils et les sofas, et les penderies de mon lit, proviennent des fabriques les plus chères et les plus réputées, et ils devaient avoir une valeur fabuleuse lorsqu'ils étaient neufs, car ils sont vieux de plusieurs siècles, même s'ils sont encore en excellent état. J'en ai vu de semblables à Hampton Court, mais ils étaient usés et miteux. Mais dans aucune des pièces je ne trouvai de miroir. Il n'y avait même pas de miroir de toilette sur ma table, et je dus utiliser celui qui se trouvait dans mon nécessaire à barbe dans mon sac afin de me raser et de me coiffer. Je n'ai pas encore vu de serviteur, ni entendu le moindre bruit aux environs du château, à part le hurlement des loups. Un peu après avoir terminé mon repas (je ne saurais dire s'il s'agissait d'un petit déjeuner ou d'un dîner, car je le pris entre cinq et six heures), je cherchai quelque chose à lire, car je ne voulais pas déambuler dans le château avant d'en avoir demandé la permission au Comte. Il n'y avait absolument rien dans la pièce, ni livre, ni journal, ni même de quoi écrire ; alors j'ouvris une autre porte, et me trouvai dans une sorte de bibliothèque. J'essayai la porte qui se trouvait de l'autre côté de la pièce, mais elle était fermée. Dans la bibliothèque, je trouvai, à mon grand étonnement, un grand nombre de livres anglais ; certaines étagères en étaient pleines, ainsi que des journaux et magazines en volumes reliés. Au milieu de la pièce, une table était couverte de journaux anglais, même si aucun n'était récent. Les livres traitaient de sujets variés : histoire, géographie, politique, économie politique, botanique, géologie,

droit – tous relatifs à l'Angleterre, et à la vie, aux coutumes et aux manières anglaises.
