Mais je ne dois pas sauter d'étapes, et poursuivre ma narration. Je relevai dûment Van Helsing dans sa surveillance de Lucy. Nous voulions qu'Arthur aille également se reposer, mais il refusa d'abord. Ce ne fut que lorsque je lui dis que nous aurions besoin de son aide pendant la journée, et que nous ne devions pas tous nous écrouler de fatigue, ce dont Lucy pouvait avoir à souffrir, qu'il accepta d'y aller. Quand je regagnai mon siège, je me rendis compte que Lucy avait légèrement bougé et avait arraché les fleurs d'ail de son cou. Je les replaçai, aussi bien que je pus, et m'assis auprès d'elle. Elle se réveilla à cet instant, et je lui donnai à manger, comme Van Helsing l'avait prescrit. Elle ne mangea que peu, et encore, avec langueur. L'instinct de survie, qui avait accompagné sa lutte lors de toute sa maladie, semblait l'avoir abandonnée. Une chose me frappa : au moment où la conscience lui revint, elle pressa les fleurs d'ail contre elle.
