Elle a besoin de sang, elle doit en recevoir, ou elle mourra. Je viens tout juste de consulter mon ami John, et nous étions sur le point de procéder à ce que nous appelons une transfusion de sang : le transférer depuis des veines qui en sont pleines, vers des veines qui en manquent. C'était John qui allait donner son sang, parce qu'il est plus jeune et plus fort que moi. » A ce moment, Arthur me prit la main, et, en silence, la serra avec force. « Mais maintenant, vous êtes ici, et vous êtes plus indiqué que nous, jeunes ou vieux, qui combattons le mal avec notre cerveau. Cela montrait en fait à quel point Lucy était faible. Un temps infini s'écoula avant que le sommeil ne commençât à faire vaciller ses paupières. Le narcotique finit toutefois par montrer sa puissance, et elle tomba dans un profond sommeil. Quand le Professeur jugea cela suffisant, il fit entrer Arthur, et lui demanda d'enlever son manteau. Puis il ajouta : « Vous pouvez l'embrasser, comme je vous l'avais promis, pendant que je rapproche la table. Aidez-moi, John, mon ami. » Et ainsi, aucun de nous deux ne les regardait tandis qu'il se penchait sur elle. Van Helsing me glissa : « Il est si jeune, si fort, et d'un sang si pur, que nous n'avons pas besoin de le défibriner. » Alors rapidement, mais avec des gestes très sûrs, Van Helsing procéda à l'opération. Elle était même de bonne humeur ; elle était pleine de joie et de vivacité, mais je pouvais percevoir des signes de la période de complète prostration qu'elle venait de traverser. Après un long moment, elle sembla sombrer dans le sommeil, mais elle faisait à chaque fois un effort pour se ressaisir et résister à l'endormissement. Cela se répéta à plusieurs reprises, lui demandant à chaque fois davantage d'efforts et à des intervalles de plus en plus rapprochés.
