Ce matin, tandis que j'étais assis au bord de mon lit, occupé à me torturer l'esprit, j'entendis au-dehors le claquement d'un fouet, et le martèlement des sabots de chevaux sur le sentier rocheux derrière la cour. Transporté de joie, je me précipitai à la fenêtre, et vis rentrer dans la cour, deux grands chariots, chacun tiré par huit robustes chevaux. Ils étaient conduits par deux Slovaques, avec leur grand chapeau, leur grande ceinture cloutée, une peau de mouton sale et de hautes bottes. Ils avaient aussi leur grande hache à la main. Je courus à la porte, espérant pouvoir les rejoindre en passant par le grand hall, pensant qu'on avait dû l'ouvrir pour eux. Mais à nouveau, ce fut un choc : la porte de ma chambre était fermée de l'extérieur. Alors je courus à la fenêtre et me mis à crier. Ils levèrent les yeux et me regardèrent stupidement, se contant de me montrer du doigt, mais alors, le « hetman » des tziganes arriva, et voyant qu'ils désignaient du doigt ma fenêtre, il dit quelque chose, et ils se mirent à rire.
