El pie

Muchos no volvieron. Muchos de los ciudadanos del mundo que marcharon a luchar por la república española, bajo tierra española quedaron.

Abe Osheroff, de la Brigada Lincoln, sobrevivió.

Un balazo le había arruinado una pierna. Con un pie quieto y el otro pie caminando, regresó a su país.

España fue su primera guerra perdida. Y desde entonces, llevado por su pie andariego, Abe no paró.

A pesar de las traiciones y las derrotas, los palos y las cárceles, no paró. Un pie no podía, pero el otro pie quería y seguía. Un pie le decía: aquí me quedo, pero el otro decidía: ahí te llevo. Y una y otra vez ese pie, el andante, volvía al camino, porque el camino es el destino.

Y ese pie cargaba con Abe a través de los Estados Unidos, de punta a punta, de mar a mar, y lo metía en líos, un lío tras otro, contra la cacería de brujas de McCarthy y la guerra de Corea y la segregación racial y la pena de muerte y el golpe de estado en Irán y el crimen de Guatemala y la carnicería de Vietnam y el baño de sangre en Indonesia y las explosiones nucleares y el bloqueo de Cuba y el cuartelazo en Chile y la asfixia de Nicaragua y la invasión de Panamá y los bombardeos de Irak y de Yugoslavia y de Afganistán y otra vez Irak y.

Abe ya tenía noventa años y seguía siendo un caminante, cuando su amigo Tony Geist le preguntó, por preguntar no más, cómo andaba. El alzó su cabeza de león de melena blanca y sonrió, de oreja a oreja:

—Aquí ando, con un pie en la tumba y el otro pie bailando.
