12. The Inquisition

Sorpresa, sí, a que no os lo esperabais.

Claro, nadie espera a la Inquisición Española.

Pues sí, hoy vamos a hablar de la Inquisición,

vamos a hablar de verdades, de cosas que realmente, como realmente era,

y de mitos, de cosas que no son exactamente verdad.

Hola, pues sí, estamos todavía en la época de los Reyes Católicos y los Austrias.

No hemos avanzado, ¿no?

Pero vamos a ver otro aspecto de la sociedad de esta época,

que es la Inquisición, que es la parte de la religión que había en este momento en los reinos,

los reinos que en el futuro se convertirán en España.

Entonces, la Inquisición.

La Inquisición se creó en 1478 por los Reyes Católicos.

No, Fernando II y Isabel I.

Y duró hasta 1834.

Entonces, sí, duró bastante tiempo, pero hoy vamos a acabar en 1614.

Porque después de 1614 tuvo menos y menos poder, menos y menos influencia.

Entonces, ¿qué era la Inquisición?

Voy a hacer una ahí, aquí, grande. Esto es la Inquisición.

¿Qué era la Inquisición?

La Inquisición era un tribunal, un tribunal.

Eran jueces, ¿no?

Pero era un tribunal de la iglesia, de la iglesia de España,

que en esta época era solamente la iglesia católica.

Bueno, a partir de cierto momento, ¿no?

En 1478, todavía no, había otras religiones que estaban permitidas.

El judaísmo, el islam.

Entonces, al principio, la Inquisición solamente vigilaba a los cristianos,

a las personas que eran cristianas, ¿no?

Había cristianos, había cristianos, había judíos y había musulmanes, ¿no?

Entonces, la Inquisición solamente podía juzgar, juzgar a los cristianos.

Y la Inquisición vigilaba que los cristianos fueran buenos cristianos.

Y, sobre todo, vigilaba la herejía.

La herejía es un delito grave contra la religión.

Un delito muy fuerte contra los valores de la religión.

Un tipo muy típico de herejía es decir ser cristiano,

pero en verdad seguir practicando los ritos de otra religión.

Seguir practicando ritos, pues, musulmanes o judíos.

Entonces, a partir de 1492, en 1492, como sabéis, se echa a los judíos.

Los judíos o se van, se van de España o se convierten al catolicismo, ¿no?

Y en 1492, también los musulmanes, a los musulmanes se les obliga a convertirse, convertirse al catolicismo.

Los musulmanes no podían, no podían irse de España.

Entonces, a partir de 1492, el cristianismo, el catolicismo, era la única religión permitida en España.

Las otras religiones, pues, ya no se podían seguir practicando.

Entonces, en la práctica, la Inquisición, pues, ya tenía poder sobre todo el mundo, todas las personas de España.

Entonces, España no fue el primer país donde hubo una Inquisición.

En otros países de Europa ya había, ya había inquisiciones.

La primera parece ser que era en Francia, en una región de Francia, donde tuvieron problemas con otra religión.

Y normalmente era el papa, el papa de Roma, el que decidía crear inquisiciones en otros países, en países, pues, del mundo católico, ¿no?

Y sí, había otras, pero por algún motivo la Inquisición española es la más conocida.

Y hoy os voy a explicar por qué. Es la más conocida gracias a Monty Python.

Bueno, no lo sé, puede ser, en parte, pero bueno, seguro que hay más razones.

Y hoy os voy a explicar, pues, toda la historia de la Inquisición española.

Entonces, voy a volverlo a explicar. La Inquisición era un tribunal.

Eran jueces, jueces que juzgaban a personas cuando se consideraba que estas personas cometían crímenes contra la religión.

Pero la Inquisición no estaba controlada a lo más alto, al nivel más alto, no estaba controlada por la iglesia, no estaba controlada por curas, ¿no?

Por obispos, cardenales o por el papa, no.

Sino que estaba controlada por los reyes, la controlaban los reyes.

Normalmente las inquisiciones de Europa las dirigía, las controlaba el papa.

Pero aquí, en España, los reyes católicos, pues eran muy amigos con el papa, se llevaban muy bien con el papa.

Entonces, pues, el papa, como favor especial, les dejó a ellos controlar la Inquisición.

Entonces, ¿por qué se hizo, por qué se creó, cuál fue el motivo de los inicios de la Inquisición en España?

Entonces, ¿cuál era la situación de las religiones en España durante el siglo XV, durante los años 1400 y pico?

Durante la Edad Media, en los reinos de España, había, sobre todo, había tres religiones.

El cristianismo, el judaísmo y el islam.

Y la convivencia era relativamente pacífica, era bastante pacífico.

Pero en 1391, en 1391 hubo violencia contra los judíos.

Hubo bastante violencia y murieron bastantes judíos.

Y durante el siglo XV fue habiendo más y más un sentimiento contra los judíos.

Y debido a esta violencia, debido a este sentimiento, los judíos se empezaron a convertir, a convertir al cristianismo.

Entonces, ya antes de que los obligaran, ya antes de 1492, ya muchos judíos se estaban convirtiendo al cristianismo.

Además, los judíos tenían prohibidas algunas cosas.

Tenían prohibidos algunos trabajos.

Tenían prohibidos algunas posiciones, prohibidas algunas posiciones oficiales.

Algunos trabajos en el gobierno, algunas posiciones de poder las tenían prohibidas.

Y eso es otra razón por la que muchos ya se habían empezado a convertir.

Entonces, cuando un judío se convertía al cristianismo, se les llamaba cristianos nuevos, los cristianos nuevos.

Y muchos, algunos, algunos judíos o algunos cristianos nuevos llegaron a puestos importantes de la sociedad.

Llegaron a tener bastante poder.

Entonces, en la sociedad también empezó a haber un sentimiento contra los cristianos nuevos.

Como un poco de rencor o, no sé, envidia quizá, porque los judíos tienen fama de ser gente muy trabajadora y muy inteligente en los negocios y tal.

No sé, creo que el tópico, el cliché es que muchas sociedades tienen envidia de los judíos.

Yo no conozco exactamente el por qué, pero parece que sí, que incluso por los que ya se habían convertido al cristianismo, pues empezó a haber este sentimiento de rencor.

Entonces, en el reino de Aragón, aquí tenemos dos reinos, ¿no?

Tenemos Aragón y tenemos Castilla.

Aquí había Navarra, pero Navarra más adelante pasará a ser parte de Aragón también.

Entonces, en Aragón ya había Inquisición. Ya había una Inquisición en Aragón y ésta la había puesto el Papa, la había establecido el Papa de Roma.

Y en 1478 los reyes católicos crearon una Inquisición también en Castilla.

Se creó una Inquisición porque habían encontrado a conversos, se habían encontrado a cristianos nuevos que de escondidas seguían practicando el judaísmo, las tradiciones judías, ¿no?

Y esta Inquisición, la Inquisición de Castilla, fue la que el Papa dejó a los reyes que la administraran ellos, que la dirigieran ellos.

Y una de las primeras cosas que hizo esta Inquisición de Castilla fue coger a seis cristianos nuevos, seis judíos conversos y quemarlos, quemarlos vivos.

Quemarlos en la hoguera, ¿no? Esto era la especialidad de la Inquisición, era quemar a gente todavía viva y, bueno, como se hacía en el pasado con las brujas y tal, pues...

Pero bueno, ya vais a ver que la Inquisición española tiene poco que ver con las brujas. Ahora os lo voy a explicar más adelante en el vídeo.

Entonces, esta Inquisición empezó en el sur, empezó en la parte sur por Andalucía, en la parte sur del reino de Castilla y luego se extendió por todo el reino de Castilla.

En Aragón fue más difícil porque en Aragón ya había una Inquisición y Fernando II, que era el rey de Aragón, intentó tomar el control de la Inquisición de Aragón, pero hubo resistencia.

Sí, no quería, el reino de Aragón no quería que el rey tomase control de la Inquisición. Y el papa también estaba en contra. El papa de Roma les dejó a los reyes la Inquisición de Castilla, pero la de Aragón no quería, al principio no quería.

Porque el papa ya se había dado cuenta que con esto, con la Inquisición, con este tipo de crímenes tan difíciles de demostrar, era muy fácil culpar a cualquier persona, culpar a tu vecino, decir...

Ah no, ese es judío, ese sigue haciendo tradiciones judías y que lo metiesen en la cárcel o que lo matasen, no. Era muy fácil denunciar a otros sin ninguna prueba. Pero finalmente el rey lo consiguió, Felipe II consiguió hacerse con el control de la Inquisición y el papa de Roma le dio permiso, le dijo que vale.

Y de esta manera, de hecho, se deshicieron de muchos cristianos nuevos en el gobierno de Aragón. Se deshicieron de muchos ex judíos que eran personas importantes en Aragón. Se deshicieron de muchos de ellos.

Entonces, a partir de este momento y la mayor parte del tiempo, casi todo el tiempo, la Inquisición de Castilla y de Aragón sería una sola entidad, una sola organización. Había un solo inquisidor general. El director de la Inquisición era el inquisidor general.

Y la mayor parte del tiempo había uno, solamente uno, solamente uno para los dos reinos.

Entonces, entre 1480 hasta 1530, la mayor parte de la actividad de la Inquisición fue contra los cristianos nuevos o los judeoconversos, los conversos. La mayoría de condenas fue para este grupo, esta parte de la sociedad.

Y en esta época hubieron unas dos mil personas, unas dos mil personas que fueron ejecutadas, que se les dio la pena de muerte, que las mataron.

Y claro, la Inquisición también se quedaba con las propiedades de estas personas. Se quedaba con sus casas, se quedaba con su dinero. Entonces, pues esto también era una motivación muy grande para la Inquisición para condenar a muchas personas.

Y también, seguramente, la Inquisición tuvo un papel importante en lo que pasó en 1492, en que se echaran a los judíos de España. Seguramente la Inquisición influyó mucho a los reyes para que tomaran esta decisión.

Pero entonces, claro, en 1492, cuando los judíos tuvieron que escoger entre irse de España o convertirse al catolicismo, pues muchos más se convirtieron. Muchos judíos escogieron convertirse al catolicismo.

Y claro, pasaron a haber muchos más católicos nuevos, cristianos nuevos, y también mucho más trabajo para la Inquisición. Pero a partir de 1530 bajó bastante la cantidad de juicios, bajó la cantidad de personas que se condenaban por la Inquisición.

Y a partir de 1560 empiezan a aumentar la cantidad de juicios por protestanismo, por ser protestante, por ser luterano. A partir de 1560 empieza a haber muchos casos de esos.

Porque el luteranismo se había empezado a extender bastante por Europa. Y en España llegó poco, llegó relativamente poco. Pero bueno, aún así hubo juicios.

Entonces, desde 1560 hasta 1614, que es el final del periodo del que vamos a hablar hoy, en esta época fue sobre todo los protestantes, los luteranos... Voy a dibujarlo así, un corazón con una cruz dentro.

Entonces, los luteranos... Eso. En este periodo fue sobre todo los luteranos y los moriscos. Los moriscos eran los que se habían convertido del islam al cristianismo.

Entonces, se cree que unos 100, unas 100 personas también las quemaron por practicar el luteranismo, por ser protestantes.

Entonces, además de juicios, de juzgar a personas, de condenar a personas... Bueno, las condenas... Os he hablado de muertos, pero muchas condenas, la mayoría, eran condenas de prisión. También hubo muchas condenas de prisión.

Entonces, además de estos juicios, de estas condenas, la Inquisición también prohibía libros. Prohibía ciertos libros. Tenía listas de libros que estaban prohibidos.

En estos libros se incluían las traducciones de la Biblia, las traducciones al español, las traducciones a la lengua hablada de las personas, porque esto era otra cosa que enfrentaba los católicos con los luteranos.

La iglesia católica creía que la Biblia se tenía que seguir usando en latín, que los curas, que las personas religiosas, tenían que explicar el significado de la Biblia a las personas.

Mientras que los luteranos pensaban que no, que la Biblia se tendría que traducir, que cualquier persona tendría que poder leer la Biblia y entenderla ellos mismos, tener un contacto más directo con Dios.

Entonces, la Biblia traducida al lenguaje común, pues, estaba prohibida por la Inquisición.

Entonces, otra vez, los moriscos, ¿no? Los moriscos se habían convertido del islam al catolicismo.

Creo que antes, antes os lo he dicho mal, en 1492 fue solamente los judíos, ¿no? Y después, en 1500, en 1502 en Castilla y en 1526, más tarde en Aragón, se obligó a los judíos a convertirse al cristianismo.

Pero luego, más tarde, en 1568, empezó a haber problemas de violencia contra los moriscos, contra los musulmanes convertidos, ¿no? Y la Inquisición empezó también a juzgar, a juzgar a muchos moriscos.

Lo que pasa que la cantidad de penas de muerte, el porcentaje de moriscos a los que se quemaba, a los que se mataba, era mucho menor, era mucho más pequeño que las de los cristianos nuevos, que las de los judíos.

¿Qué pasa con las brujas? Las brujas eran personas, sobre todo mujeres, a las que se acusaba de hacer magia, magia negra, de usar poderes sobrenaturales, de hacer tratos con el demonio para, pues, hacer daño a otras personas, ¿no?

Pero, en general, la Inquisición española lo consideraba una superstición. No creía que las brujas existiesen. La mayoría de casos por brujería, pues, no se juzgaban, no se investigaban.

En general, la mayoría. Sí que hubo algún caso, hubo muy pocos casos, pero hubo algún caso. El caso más grande fue en Navarra. En Navarra sí que se condenó a seis personas, otra vez a seis personas, a la hoguera, a que los quemaran por brujería, ¿no?

Fue el caso más grande, los demás fueron más pequeños y hubo pocos, bastantes pocos casos. Hubo muchos menos casos que en Francia, que en Alemania o que en Inglaterra, ¿no?, donde hubo más casos por brujería.

Además, la Inquisición también juzgó a muchos cristianos. Juzgó a cristianos viejos, a familias cristianas de toda la vida por, también, por crímenes contra la religión. Entonces, por ser cristiano, no te salvabas. También te podían denunciar y te podían juzgar.

Un crimen por el que te podían juzgar era solamente por decir que tener sexo, tener relaciones sexuales antes del matrimonio, antes de casarte, que no era malo, que no era una cosa mala.

O por decir que María, que la Virgen María, que la madre de Jesús, que no era virgen, que había estado con un hombre para quedarse embarazada, ¿no? Pues por eso también te podían juzgar.

Que te juzgasen no quiere decir que te quemasen en la hoguera. La mayoría de casos de la Inquisición fueron penas de prisión, fueron gente a la que mandaron a prisión.

En una sociedad como esta, esta época en España, en la que estaba prohibido el divorcio, estaba prohibido divorciarte, separarte de tu marido o de tu mujer.

Era bastante común tener amantes, tener pues otro hombre o otra mujer fuera de tu marido o de tu esposa, ¿no? Entonces, si tú eras hombre y descubrían que tenías un amante, te mandaban a las galeras, te mandaban a remar durante cinco años.

Cinco años, sí, sí. Cinco años te mandaban a un barco, un barco grande, que eran las galeras, y te hacían remar porque las personas que remaban en las galeras eran presos, eran personas condenadas.

Otro delito era tener relaciones homosexuales, tener sexo con una persona de, bueno, entre hombres, básicamente entre hombres. Y 102 personas fueron condenadas por tener sexo entre hombres.

No fueron condenadas, fueron ejecutadas. Se quemó a 102 personas por tener sexo homosexual. En total, en toda la existencia de la Inquisición, se calcula que se ejecutaron entre 3.000 y 5.000 personas.

Entre 3.000 y 5.000 personas fueron quemadas, quemadas vivas en la hoguera. Pero muchos casos, muchos casos de la Inquisición eran crímenes muy pequeños. No, seguramente, no las personas que fueron ejecutadas, ¿no? Pero muchos de los casos juzgados por la Inquisición eran tonterías, eran casos muy pequeños.

Por ejemplo, hubo denuncias por estar teniendo una conversación y que alguien mencionase la Virgen María, hablase de la Virgen María, de la madre de Jesús, y que otra persona sonriese. Tú, tú has sonreído cuando he hablado de la Virgen María. Te denuncio.

También una denuncia por haber comido cebolla y haber comido carne de cerdo en un día, un día del año, en el que la religión decía que no había que comer carne de cerdo, que no había que comer cebolla.

Pero esta persona, nadie lo vio comiendo cebolla o comiendo carne de cerdo, sino que esta persona era francesa. Y alguien dijo, tú eres francés, en Francia hay muchos herejes, en Francia hay muchas personas que no siguen la religión bien, entonces tú seguro que comiste cerdo y comiste cebolla el día en el que estaba prohibido.

Y ya está, por eso denunciaron a una persona, ¿no? Y esto era muy fácil de hacer porque podías denunciar a alguien anónimamente, podías denunciar a alguien sin que nadie supiese quién era la persona que denunciaba, quién era la persona que había dado la información, ¿no?

Y si se demostraba que no era verdad, se demostraba que esa persona no había hecho nada malo, a la persona que había denunciado o se le ponía una pena muy pequeña, un castigo muy pequeño, o no, incluso no había ningún castigo para la persona que había mentido, que había puesto una denuncia falsa, ¿no?

Entonces, claro, este sistema, pues se abusaba mucho, mucha gente abusaba de él, se usaba la Inquisición para dañar o para deshacerte de enemigos, de enemigos personales, de rivales políticos.

A veces, incluso, entre antiguos amigos que se habían enfadado o entre miembros de la misma familia que no se llevaban bien, pues se denunciaban entre ellos.

Entonces, la Inquisición tenía sus propias cárceles. Habían las cárceles del sistema de justicia oficial, del sistema de justicia del Estado, y habían otras cárceles separadas de la Inquisición.

Entonces, la Inquisición podía cogerte y meterte en la cárcel, te podía meter en la cárcel sin denunciarte, sin haber oficialmente dicho de qué te acusaban, sin haberte juzgado, te podían meter en la cárcel, sin decirle a nadie dónde estabas.

No le decían a tu familia dónde estabas, nadie te podía venir a ver, no podías hablar con un abogado, y bueno, pues también había muchas veces que se torturaba a gente, se torturaba, se hacía daño a gente para extraer confesiones, para que las personas confesaran.

Aunque esto parece que era normal en la época. Esto se hacía también incluso en el sistema de justicia normal, también se hacía bastante esto. De hecho, en la Inquisición, la Inquisición lo hacía menos que el sistema legal normal.

No porque fueran buenos, porque fueran buenas personas, sino realmente porque se habían dado cuenta que con las torturas lo que conseguías es que la gente mintiese, conseguías que la gente dijese, sí, sí, sí, yo he sido, es culpa mía, solamente porque no querían sentir dolor, no querían que los torturases.

Entonces, ¿por qué la Inquisición española tiene esta mala imagen? Es conocida internacionalmente por ser muy mala, por ser muy cruel. Bueno, seguro que esto importa, ¿no? Importa que realmente quemaron a muchas personas, que sobre todo trataron a los judíos o a los judíos conversos bastante mal.

Aunque los historiadores o muchos historiadores consideran que se le ha dado realmente mala imagen, pues que había una razón, había un motivo histórico para que otros países tuvieran pues una mala imagen de España, le dieran mala imagen porque era bastante su adversario.

Era su adversario debido a todo el poder, toda la fuerza que tenía España en esta época. Debido también a la rivalidad, la rivalidad entre protestantes y entre católicos.

Y bueno, no sé hasta qué punto la mala imagen de la Inquisición es real o es una exageración. Tampoco me voy a meter a quizá dar mi opinión ahí porque no conozco suficiente del tema para hablar de esto. O para dar una opinión para decir con seguridad pues que es cierto y que no es cierto, ¿no?
