Les Prépositions (French Prepositions)

A preposition is a word that indicates place, time, or movement. As in English, a preposition must precede a noun.

The preposition à can often be combined with a definite article. When that happens, there needs to be a contraction.

à + le = au

Je suis allé au supermarché.

à + la = à la

Nous avons vu Marie à la fromagerie.

à + l’ = à l’

Ils se sont rencontrés à l’école.

à + les = aux’

Le professeur a distribué les examens aux élèves.

The preposition chez also can have multiple meanings–its most common translation is “at ______’s house” but it can also be used for businesses or other similar establishments..

On a dîné chez Pierre hier.

Elle est allée chez le dentiste.

Vous avez acheté ces baguettes chez le boulanger LeClerc?

Generally, these prepositions function the same way as English prepositions, though there are some exceptions.

Depuis is like “since” in that it is used to describe events that have happened since a specific time, or for specific durations of time.

J’habite à Paris depuis 2002.
Il étudie le français depuis 3 ans.

Elle était professeur de maths depuis 5 ans la dernière fois que je lui ai parlé.

Pendant is similar to depuis, but it refers to an action in the past that has no relation to the present.

Je vais habiter au Canada pendant deux mois.
Nous avons travaillé pendant 2 ans (and then we quit working).
J’attendais pendant 5 minutes avant qu’il est arrivé.

The rules regarding the contraction of à and a definite article still applies when à is used as a preposition of movement.

Il va au cinéma.
Tu vas à l’université.
Nous allons aux Maldives.
Ils vont à la bibliothèque.
The preposition de also contracts with definite articles.
Je reviens du cinéma.
Elle revient de l’université.
Vous revenez des Maldives.
Elles reviennent de la bibliothèque.
