攻殻機動隊 STAND ALONE COMPLEX - 西暦2030年——あらゆるネットが眼根を巡らせ、光や電子となった意思をある一方向に向かわせたとしても“孤人”が複合体としての“個”になるほどには情報化されていない時代……。 情報ネットワーク化が加速度的に進展し、犯罪が複雑化の一途を遂げる社会的混乱の中、事前に犯罪の芽を探し出し、これを除去する攻性の組織が設立された。内務省直属の独立部隊公安9課、通称「攻殻機動隊」である。 公安9課の役割は、深刻な電脳犯罪への対処、国内における要人の援護、政治家の汚職摘発、凶悪殺人の捜査から極秘裏の暗殺まで、多岐に渡っている。彼らは電脳戦を最も得意としつつ、高性能義体を生かした物理的な戦闘においても特筆すべき能力を発揮する、精鋭部隊である。
