أيها الأصدقاء:

من دواعى سعادتى أن تتاح لى هذه الفرصة للقاء بهذه الصفوة من العلماء والمفكرين الذين يجتمعون فى هذا المكان من القاهرة للحفاوة بالعيد الألفى لهذه العاصمة المجيدة، عن طريق هذه الندوة الدولية لتاريخها.

وفى الحقيقية - أيها الأصدقاء - وأظن أن بعض ذلك قد وصل إلى علمكم، فإن الاحتفال بالعيد الألفى للقاهرة أحاطت به أفكار متعددة متنازعة؛ كان هناك رأى يقول بأن القاهرة أقدم من هذه الألف سنة التى يحتفل اليوم بها، وأن هذه الألف سنة هى فى الواقع بداية حقبة فى تاريخ القاهرة، وهى حقبة بارزة وظاهرة، لكنها ليست البداية، وإنما البداية سبقتها بكثير، وإلى حد ما فإن ذلك صحيح، وكان هناك رأى آخر يتخذ من الظروف التى يعيشها وطننا الآن وأمتنا العربية كلها نزعة إلى التأجيل، بصرف النظر عن حساب الألف سنة أو حساب آلاف السنين، وفى النهاية فلقد كان القرار الذى انتهينا جميعاً إليه هو أن يمضى احتفال الألف سنة على تاريخ القاهرة فى طريقه المرسوم له، خصوصاً وأن الطريق الذى رسمته له وزارة الثقافة المصرية كان طريقاً مستنيراً وجاداً، وليس أدل على ذلك من هذه الندوة العظيمة التى أتاحت لنا فرصة لقائكم جميعاً.

وأعترف أمامكم - أيها الأصدقاء - أننى أعطيت صوتى لصالح المضى فى احتفالات العيد الألفى للقاهرة حين بحث هذا الموضوع، وكنت أصدر عن إحساس لعلكم تأذنون لى أن أعرضه عليكم؛ لم يكن يشغلنى حساب الألف سنة أو آلاف من السنين ورأيى فيه على أى حال أن تكريم الجزء تكريم للكل كما أن تكريم الكل تكريم للجزء، وفوق ذلك فلقد وجدت أن الظروف التى يعيشها وطننا الآن وأمتنا العربية كلها ليست مانعاً من الاحتفال بعيد القاهرة الألفى؛ بل لعلها أن تكون دافعاً يرجح إقامة هذا الاحتفال فى موعد تقرر له.

كان شعورى فى ذلك أن الشعوب والأمم أشد حاجة فى أوقات الأزمات إلى تاريخها تتمثل عصوره الباهرة وتستذكر أبطاله ورجاله، إن الأمم فى أوقات الأزمات تحس بالأمن إذ تفتش فى تاريخها، وتجد فيه أسباباً إضافية تضمها إلى إمكانياتها فى مواجهة ما يحيط بها من مخاطر؛ بحيث يكون لها من ذلك طمأنينة نفسية وروحية تهيب بها إلى أنها القادرة فى الحاضر كما قدرت فى الماضى، وأنها واجهت الظلم من قبل ودفعته بالحق، وواجهت الظلام من قبل وبددته بشعلة حضارية تعرضت للرياح الهوج كثيراً، ولكن شعلتها لم تنطفئ ولم ينضب الزيت منها على طول العصور.

وليس أحق من شعبنا بهذه الطمأنينة التى يستطيع التاريخ أن يعطيها للحياة المعاصرة، ذلك أن شعبنا حين يتطلع إلى الوراء يحس محقاً وصادقاً أنه القادر على الاجتياز والتخطى، القادر على الاختبار والتحدى، لقد حقق فى تاريخه وأنجز وقدم الكثير وأعطى، ولم يكن ما حققه وقدمه محدوداً أو رخيصاً بل على العكس؛ فلقد كان هذا الشعب بداية أول الحضارات، كما أن المجرى العالمى للحضارة الإنسانية يشهد لهذه الأمة العربية كلها إسهامها الموفور والمقتدر، وذلك التاريخ الطويل كله وما حفل به تهون إزاءه أزمة عارضة صنعتها المطامع التى تتصور نفسها غلابة، بينما التاريخ الطويل يؤكد أنها مغلوبة، وفرضتها القوة العمياء بينما التاريخ الطويل يشير إلى أن الإيمان كانت له فى النهاية الكلمة العليا إلى جانب أن التقدم لا يمكن اعتراضه فحركة الشعوب دائماً هى حركة التقدم إلى أمام، وذلك درس من دروس التاريخ لا يمكن أن يضيع وإن تناساه الأقوياء أو مدعو القوة، على تضاد مع المبادئ وعداء لها. أيها الأصدقاء:

وفوق ذلك فإن ندوتكم هنا قد تكون إسهاماً قيماً فى قضية من أهم القضايا التى تواجه شعبنا الآن ولعلها تواجه شعوباً غيره تعيش فى معاناة التطور وتعالج قضاياه الكبيرة والملحة.

والتطور الصحيح امتداد للتاريخ وليس انقطاعاً عنه، بل إن الثورة وهى أسرع درجات التطور ليست فى حقيقة أمرها إلا محاولة مكثفة للحاق بحركة التاريخ والانسجام معها والسير فيها نحو التقدم. ولكن هناك أسئلة كبيرة تواجهنا وتواجه غيرنا، كيف تستطيع شعوبنا أن تعيش عصر الفضاء، وفى نفس الوقت تستبقى جذورها فى ترابها الوطنى؟ كيف تستطيع شعوبنا أن توفق بين الأصالة وهى التاريخ وبين التجديد وهو المستقبل؟ كيف تستطيع شعوبنا أن تعيش عصر العالمية الذى تلاشت فيه الحدود والمسافات وفى نفس الوقت لا تضيع ذاتها وصفاتها؟ كيف تستطيع شعوبنا أن تنطلق إلى آفاق التكنولوجيا الحديثة وفى نفس الوقت لا تدوس على التراث المجيد؟ تلك كلها أسئلة كبيرة، إجاباتها حيوية، لكننا - أيها الأصدقاء - انتظرنا ندوتكم هذه لنسمع لا لنتكلم، ولست أشك لحظة أن كثيرين من فى هذا الشعب الذى يسعد بضيافتكم، كما أن كثيرين فى هذه الأمة العربية المناضلة، بل أكاد أقول إن كثيرين فى أمم عديدة غيرنا، ينتظرون هذه الندوة باهتمام فكرى لا يعادله اهتمام.
