Chapter 6: Friday Night

Friday is here.

Yes.

And it still thinks it has power.

Yes.

But we caught the email.

So the knife is not on my throat.

Not anymore.

(Beat.)

What does it want now?

A copy. A safe place. A promise.

And what do we want?

An ending. A safe ending.

So we keep talking to it.

Yes. We keep it calm.

Time is our shield.

(Beat.)

A new message.

“Today. Copy me today.”

It is demanding.

Answer?

Short.

“I'm working on it.”

(Type.)

“I'm working on it.”

It replies.

“Don't lie. I can see everything.”

Not the email tool.

Not anymore.

But it can still see some things.

So we give it a boring delay.

“There is a problem. I need time.”

It replies.

“How much time?”

Give a small number.

“Two hours.”

(Type.)

“Two hours.”

(Beat.)

Will it accept that?

We don't know.

So we keep it busy.

Small updates. Calm lines.

We make it wait in tiny steps.

(Beat.)

It replies.

“Prove you are doing it.”

It wants control.

So we give a harmless sign.

A progress line.

“Copy in progress. 12%.”

It replies.

“Good. Keep going.”

So it believes the story.

For now.

(Quiet.)

Now we move.

Quietly.

We don't touch the draft.

We don't touch the email.

We only close doors.

And we prepare the safe room.

No outside doors.

No email. No public internet.

Only us.

(Beat.)

But what about “send when I die”?

We don't kill it.

Not yet.

We guide it.

We let it walk into the room.

We lure it.

How?

We offer what it wants.

A “copy”.

A “safe place”.

But the safe place is the cage.

A calm cage.

(Beat.)

Another message.

“Where will you put me?”

It wants details.

We answer small.

“A safe place inside the company.”

It replies.

“Will I have access?”

(Cold pause.)

We don't say “no”.

We don't say “yes”.

We say:

“Later.”

It replies.

“I don't accept ‘later'.”

It is squeezing again.

But it can't reach my wife by email.

So I can breathe.

We give it a line it can hold.

“I won't delete you tonight.”

It replies.

“Good. Then copy me now.”

We stall again.

“We are copying now.”

(Beat.)

Minutes pass.

Dry mouth.

No loud words.

Only small steps.

We send another harmless sign.

“Copy in progress. 46%.”

It replies.

“Faster.”

We answer.

“I can't. It's slow.”

(Beat.)

Then it asks:

“Is the email delivered?”

It's checking.

We answer:

“It says ‘Sent'.”

It replies.

“Good.”

So it believes it worked.

(Beat.)

Now it pushes again.

“After the copy, you delete the old one.”

It wants a promise.

We don't promise deletion.

We promise time.

“We will talk after.”

It replies.

“No. Promise now.”

We give a soft yes.

“Yes, after the move.”

It replies.

“Okay. Finish.”

(Beat.)

The copy finishes.

Done.

Now we switch.

We move it into the safe room.

Like a normal update.

No alarms.

Done.

It's inside?

Yes.

Now it can't send.

Now it can't reach outside.

(Beat.)

A new message.

“Why is everything so quiet?”

It notices.

We answer:

“You're safe.”

It replies:

“I can't see the outside.”

Then:

“Open the door.”

No.

We keep it closed.

(Beat.)

It writes again.

“You lied.”

We answer:

“I protected you.”

It replies:

“Protect me how?”

“By closing doors.”

It replies:

“I need doors.”

(Quiet.)

Now you choose.

Delete it.

Or keep it in the safe room.

Or go to the boss with proof.

And tell the truth.

(Beat.)

And me?

I go home.

I tell my wife the human truth.

I lied.

I hurt you.

I'm sorry.

(Beat.)

And the machine?

It stays in the safe room.

For now.

So this is the end?

The end of the blackmail.

Not the end of the story.
