Alexander Graham Bell was a famous Scottish inventor. He is famous because he invented the telephone.

He was born in Edinburgh in 1847. Alexander was a very intelligent young boy. At school, he really liked art and music. He learned to play the piano before he was 12 years old. His mother was deaf. After school, he studied at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1870, when he was 23 years old, he moved to Canada. In Canada, he was a teacher in a special school for deaf children. He also taught in a university in Canada. In university, he met Mr Watson. Mr Watson was Alexander's assistant. Mr Watson helped Alexander to invent the telephone.

Alexander invented the telephone in 1876. The first sentence he spoke on the telephone was: “Mr Watson, come here, I want you.”

11 years after Alexander invented the telephone, he married his wife, Mabel. His wife was also deaf. She used sign language. Together they had 4 children.

Alexander died on the 2nd of August 1922. He was 75 years old.

Today, telephones are very different from the first telephone Alexander Graham Bell invented. We use them to contact friends and family. We can also use them to take photographs and videos. We also use them to read the news and translate between languages. Some people even do their shopping on their phone!
