Our breakfast is one of the best in the world.
So how have we come to the point where there is such a big selection of breakfast cereals in the supermarket?
When and why did this all-American staple become so popular here in Israel?
Kellogg's first box of Cornflakes
was sold here all the way back from the mandate era
and it's main clientele was the British soldiers who were familiar with the brand from back home.
Us on the the other hand, took another four decades
until we started to seriously adopt cereal.
Throughout this time, consumption per capita here is
on several dozen to several hundred grams a year. That's all.
The former importer of Kellogg's, Tzila Horowitz,
once said in an interview how hard it was to convince Israelis
that they weren't talking about bird food because let's be real here.
So what had changed? And why?
In one word: America.
In 19th century America, the classic breakfast consisted of meat.
Especially pork.
This fattening diet may have provided energy for those who worked labor intensive jobs,
but it also caused more than a few people to develop health issues.
Various experts, mainly religious, tried to find meatless alternatives.
For health reasons but also because they believed
that the consumption of meat encourages inappropriate thoughts and self-indulgence.
One of the was Dr. John Harvey Kellogg,
who ran a well-known health resort for the rich in the town of Battle Creek in Michigan.
Dr. Kellogg would offer his patients flavorless grain cookies
because what wouldn't you do for health?
This was until a surprising breakthrough came in 1894.
During a culinary experiment that was conducted with his younger brother, Will Kellogg,
the pair had forgotten the soaked corn kernels.
Since it hurt them to throw the kernels in the garbage,
they decided to bake them and to their surprise, the results were actually delicious.
At least that's what the establishment's patients thought,
especially after putting this strange food into milk.
And so, at least according to legend, corn flakes or Cornflakes were born.
The commercial success of Cornflakes and breakfast cereals in general,
brought all sorts of entrepreneurs who saw the potential.
and the first one who saw great success was Charles Post,
whose cereals we eat to this day.
After he tasted Dr. Kellogg's tasty corn flakes,
Post decided to settle in Battle Creek and create a rival product
and publish numerous ads that would emphasize the medical qualities in his product
including healing chronic illnesses and raising one's IQ.
The religious Kellogg refrained from promoting his product through advertisements
because the advertising industry was associated with shady merchants and criminals.
Then, only then. But for his younger brother will, there wasn't a problem.
He copied Post's brilliant marketing tactics
and in a short amount of time he himself would be a successful businessman.
In the years to come, other entrepreneurs flocked to Battle Creek in an attempt to replicate the success
and in the first decade of the new century, this small town alone developed
more than 100 new breakfast cereal products.
The tough competition forced the manufacturers to perfect not only the recipes,
but most of all, the marketing and advertising.
Suddenly every brand had his own mascot
that was primarily meant to attract the eyes of children.
But the advertisers always managed to include a catchy slogan,
sometimes health oriented, for adults.
This innovative and aggressive market turned breakfast cereal
into a healthy alternative in the United States
and this notion wasn't undermined even after they started adding in food coloring
and harmful sweeteners in the 40's. Back to us.
The relationship between the Israeli market and breakfast cereals
started to change only in the 1970's.
The various cereals penetrated the local market in great strides.
Based on 3 strategically important attributes:
The need for milk to prepare them, their nutritional value
and the laziness of man to chew.
Essentially, this is the best Jewish mother in a more modern package.
Instead of porridge which was a bother to make, you just had to pour milk over the cereal.
And yet, the real breakthrough came after another decade.
This happened with a lot of thanks to the marketing people of Telma
who recognized the potential and convinced their managers to create a line of cereals made in Israel
and launched an advertising campaign.
Maybe the fact that the pace of life here became faster helped them
because people now had less time to spend on making breakfast.
Maybe it's simply the desire to copy the Americans.
Bottom line, the campaign succeeded
and nobody though the they were talking about bird food this time around.
And What about today?
40% of the children in Israel eat cereal at least once a day.,
from the sugary to the healthier and more nutritious kinds
at least according to the people at Telma.
In adults by the way, that figure stands at around 30%,
and this puts us at 12th place in the average consumption of cereal per person.
at 2.7 kg a year. We're not far off from the Americans.
