Geslacht

A general grammatical meaning of the noun is an object. The noun answers the questions who? (animate) and what? (inanimate). The nouns are concrete (книга, самолет), material (воздух, сахар), abstract (радость, любовь) and collective (листва, молодежь). Russian nouns have a gender (feminine, masculine and neuter) and number (singular and plural).

The common gender nouns can name both feminine and masculine persons:
Какой ты молодец!

Nummer

All the nouns in the Russian language are either singular (one object) or plural (many objects). Some of the nouns can be exclusively singular or exclusively plural.

There are six objective cases of Russian nouns. The nouns get different endings and change forms. This is what we call cases, and they show the role of the noun in the sentence.

Let’s take the word еда (food) and see how it changes in different cases.

Именительный - кто? что? (wie? wat?) - еда.
Овощи, фрукты, мясо, рыба - это еда. Vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish are food.

Родительный - кого? чего? (of whom? of what? Show the belonging of something or somebody to something or somebody else) - еды.
На столе было много еды. A lot of food was on the table.

Дательный - кому? чему? (to whom? to what? Show that something is given to somebody) - еде.
Основное место на столе отводится еде. The main place on the table is for food.

Винительный - кого? что? (to accuse whom? what? Shows the action object) - еду.
Я принес еду. I brought the food.

Творительный - кем? чем? (by whom? by what? Shows that there’s an instrument that is used to create something) - едой.
Иногда лучше не экспериментировать с едой. Sometimes it’s better not to experiment with food.

Предложный - о ком? о чем? (about whom? of what? Show that a place or an object are the objects of speech) - о еде.
Голодный мечтает о еде. A hungry man dreams of food.

Declension

Declension means changing the form of the noun so we can identify it’s case, gender and number. There are three declensions - I, II, and III.
