— Cum te-ai schimbat! Însă... desigur că... în bine. Numai — de! ce să zic! nu pari în fonduri, îi zise acesta.

— Ei da! M-am schimbat; cît despre fonduri, n-am fost niciodată bogat. De cîtăva vreme sunt, apoi, și fără funcțiune; dar tu, ce te-ai făcut de atîta vreme?

— Pe unde crezi că n-am umblat? Nouă țări și nouă mări: cu toate aceste nu pot să zic că mi-a mers rău.

Și din aceste momente, prietenul lui Dereanu se arătă nedespărțit de el, îl ajuta, își împărți odaia cu dînsul — dormeau și făceau chefuri împreună. Aceasta însă nu ținu mult. Cîteva cuvinte, pe care el i le spuse într-o zi, îl răniră de moarte. Trufia celui care ar hotărî și de rîndul ăsta soarta celui care e în lipsă, și puțin în urmă odaia călduroasă răsună lung de zgomotul unei uși trîntită pe țîțînele ei.

Dar, între răsunetul ușei trîntite și momentele în care se află, au trecut, pentru Dereanu, trei zile — trei zile de nemîncare și nedormire. Cu cei cincizeci de bani pe care i-a găsit în căptușeala pozunarului de la jiletcă, el și-a cumpărat o jimblă, din care i-a mai rămas o bucată, ce-i rînjește sub braț, printr-o spărtură a gazetei în care a înfășurat-o.

Nicu, care nu intrase întîia oară acolo — se așeză și el pe plușul zgîit al canapelelor, cerîndu-și paharul lui cu apă, care i se aduse cu multă bunăvoință, și se apucă să aștepte...

Ce? nu știa nici el: soarta lui? naștera Mântuitorului? — sau pe amîndouă deodată? Dar, oricum ar fi fost, el se uita cînd la pervazurile despoleite ale oglinzilor și cînd la felinarul din Piața Teatrului, ce se vedea prin ușa de geamuri a cafenelei.

Cete de băieți cu "Bună dimineața la Moș-Ajun", se bălăbăneau printr-însul, troieniți pînă la glezne, își pierdeau galoșii și, pentru a se încălzi, se loveau cu bulgări de zăpadă. Nicu ieși cel din urmă din cafenea, își strînse haina la piept, își înfundă picioarele în moliciunea ninsoarei și o luă înainte pe trotuarele pustii. El mergea alăturat de case, în umbra lor culcată peste uliță, și trecea cîteodată ca o iasmă prin fășiile de lumină împăiejenată ale felinarelor. Dar Dereanu nu mai făcea doi pașii fără să alunece. El se tîra mai mult decît umbla. Se tîra ca un cîine orbit de moarte, dar tot credincios stăpînului, și se apropia de banca ce fusese cuibul lui de visuri de odinioară, — atunci cînd luna albea aproape ștearsă în stînga turnului Colței...
