"아닙니다. 쌍룡임다. 양쪽 두 마리씩 네 마리였슴다." 키득거리던 강의실에 일제히 폭소가 터져나왔다. 사실 웃을 대목은 아니지만 이미 형성된 공감대가 있어선지 대답하는 자도 질문하는 자도 듣고 있는 자들도 모두 개의치 않았다. 여섯 번 수감에 17년 옥살이. 제 나이 딱 절반을 감옥에서 보낸 그는, 내가 자연스레 "별이"라 부르면 당연스럽게 "네"하고 대답했다. 여섯 살에 아버지를 여의고 홀어머니와 살며 숱하게 배를 곯던 별이는 중학교 갈 무렵 '조직'에 엮여 제 말마따나 "징글징글하고도 숱하게 나쁜 짓"을 하고 소년원을 들락거렸다. 조직의 3인자까지 올라가 그 바닥에서 출세한 후 이어진 마지막 징역은 길고 혹독했다. 30명이나 되는 동생들 살리려 세 명이 사건을 뒤집어쓴 다음 둘마저 내보내고 홀로 7년을 견뎠다 했다. 그야말로 조직의 쓴맛을 볼대로 다 본 다음, 바늘로 심은 황룡을 바늘로 다시 파내는 고통을 견디며 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸는 청년이다.

현실은 상상보다 훨씬 더 앞서갑니다. 방구석에서 인터넷 들여다보며 이런 저런 상상을 하는 것보다 사람의 사연을 직접 만나보는 것이 훨씬 더 강력하고 특별합니다. 사람들의 삶은 이미 충분한 이야기가 되어있거든요. 미술치료사도 겸하고 있는 이 작가는 상상하거나 취재하는 정도가 아니라 사연 덩어리들과 아예 함께 생활하다시피 했군요. 심장 수술이 잦았던 한 사람이 눕고 몸 크기로 그림을 그린 다음 참가자들이 그곳에 자신의 아픈 곳을 표시하고 치유를 기원하는 꽃과 나무를 그리고 분홍색으로 격려의 문구를 적어 넣는 장면은 참 감동적입니다. 감동은 아픔의 과정이 있어야 나오는 것 아니겠어요?
