À quelques jours d'écart, on a tous les deux visité San Francisco… S.

: C'est… c'est ça! Et, tu étais là quand?

: J'étais là le… j'étais à San Francisco le week-end dernier… S.

: Oui.

: … de Vendredi à Samedi, pour le week-end de Pâques.

: Ah, bon. Et c'était la première fois, pour toi? H.

: Oui, oui.

C'était la première fois que je… j'allais à San Francisco. S.

: Et quelle… quelle impression est-ce que cela a fait sur toi?

: Ah… J'ai vraiment été très emballé par San Francisco. C'est vraiment une ville magnifique. En plus, il faisait un soleil magnifique. Oh, j'ai eu quelques coups de soleil en rentrant, ce qui n'est quand même pas évident, au mois de mars, d'avoir des coups de soleil mais… j'étais très content de ma visite. S.

: Où… est-ce que tu… es resté, là? Dans un hôtel?

: Oui, oui.

Dans un petit... dans ce qu'ils appellent un « hostel ». C'est une sorte d'auberge de jeunesse qui était situé près d'Union Square, c'est une petite placette où il y a une colonne au milieu. Très, très pittoresque, très sympathique. Un bon endroit pour s'asseoir et boire un verre avec quelques amis. S.

: Oui.

Est-ce que tu es allé… tu y es allé avec des amis?

: Oui.

Oui, j'y suis allé avec quatre amis Français. S.

: Et je… Oui, Union Square, c'est entouré de… de grands immeubles, enfin, « skyscrapers » etcetera. C'est… c'est le centre presque de… du Financial District, je crois, enfin… H.

: Oui c'est tout… c'est tout à côté du Financial District. Le Financial District qui est assez impressionnant. Il n'y a pas grand-chose à voir, mis à part de buildings gigantesques et… Il y a beaucoup de… construction là-bas, de… de chantiers et… il y en… il y a des i… j'ai l'impression qu'ils construisent des… gratte-ciels encore plus grands que ce qu'ils avaient déjà comme… comme si jamais ça ne suffisait pas. J'imagine que… il doit y avoir une bonne raison mais c'est assez impressionnant de voir ces... ces immeubles. Je ne suis jamais allé à New-York. J'imagine qu'à New-York c'est encore plus impressionnant mais là, déjà, c'était très impressionnant. S.

: Et ce que j'ai… j'ai aussi trouvé assez impressionnant, c'est… c'est les anciens immeubles. C'est-à-dire, pas les… gratte-ciels qui… qui, enfin, qui ont été construits les… les dernières années, mais les… les bâtiments qui datent de… les années trente, par exemple. H.

: Oui, il y a énormément de… de bâtiments un peu anciens très pittoresques. Il y a… bien, il y a les classiques maisons victoriennes.

: Oui, ça c'est autre chose, enfin, oui… H.

: C'est… mais c'est vrai qu'il y a aussi d'autre… d'autres bâtiments. Bien, j'ai l'impression que la… que soixante-dix pourcents de la ville est composé comme ça de petites maisons, de petites maisonnettes qui ont deux ou trois étages. S.

: Oui, je crois que… c'est un peu la réussite de San Francisco. Ils ont concentré les… les gratte-ciels dans… dans une section, là, de la ville et, à part ça, il n'y a que des… des immeubles, enfin, des… des bâtiments de… de trois, quatre étages et ils sont tous joints l'un à l'autre, pas comme ici. H.

: Oui.

Oui, oui.

Oui, puis c'est… en plus, avec le… avec San Francisco qui monte et qui descend, ça donne un côté vraiment très pittoresque. Il a des… des endroits vraiment, vraiment particuliers et que… à mon avis, on ne peut trouver qu'à San Francisco. S.

: Oui.

: C'est très, très joli comme ville. S.

: Je suis allé à Seattle aussi.

: Ah, oui!

: Mais, par rapport à Seattle et Vancouver, je trouve que, oui, San Francisco est plus européenne dans le sens où il y une vie de quartier qui est beaucoup plus présente. Il y a des… plein de petits quartiers qui… qui s'étendent sur quelques rues où on voit les commerçants… les commerçants s'agiter qui… qui sont très pittoresques. Et il y a aussi énormément de restaurants un peu partout, c'est… c'est vraiment… ça ressemble… ça me rappelle un petit peu… un petit peu l'Europe. Mais, surtout, ce qui me rappelle l'Europe c'est qu'il y a énormément de culture à San Francisco. Cho… il y en a net… il y en a nettement moins de choses à voir, par exemple, à Vancouver et Seattle. Il y a quelques musées, évidemment mais, globalement, il y a beaucoup moins de choses à voir que dans des villes comme Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux. Même… même si c'est… ça a tendance à se développer. C'est quand même très loin d'être à la… les… les villes nord-américaines, je pense, sont… niveau culture, sont encore loin d'être à la hauteur des villes européennes. Ce qui est normal; ils ont beaucoup moins d'histoire. Par contre, San Francisco, il y a énormément de musées. Il y a apparemment énormément de choses à voir, de choses à faire là-bas.

: Oui.

C'est intéressant. J'ai… j'ai acheté un livre sur l'histoire de… de San Francisco qui n'a pas tellement d'histoire, finalement, parce que c'est une ville qui date… Bon. Les Espagnols, ils étaient là mais ils n'étaient pas très nombreux, quelques centaines de soldats, puis… ensuite, les Mexicains étaient là pour vingt… vingt et quelques années puis, ils avaient des… des « Ranches », enfin… Et puis, tout de suite, les Américains sont venus, après la guerre entre les Etats-Unis et le Mexique et, là, ensuite, il y a eu la ruée sur… vers l'or. Comment ça se dit, en Français?

: Oui, la ruée vers l'or, c'est ça. S.

: La ruée vers l'or. Et puis là, les… comment dirais-je, les développeurs là, les… les gens qui ont développé, donc…

: Les pionniers…

: … l'immobilier là… Non, non. Mais je veux dire les gens qui ont… qui rachetaient le terrain qui appartenait d'abord aux Mexicains qui avaient, donc, des… des latifundia, des « ranches » avec… avec des… des domestiques Indiens etcetera, ils ont racheté ces terrains-là et puis ils ont tout fait pour gagner le maximum d'argent. Donc ils ont… ils ont divisé ces… ces terrains dans les, enfin, en… comment dirais-je, en… lopins…

: En parcelles?

: … en parcelles le plus étroit possible.

: Ah, oui…

: Et c'est pour ça qu'on voit tellement de maisons, mais alors, construites sur des… H.

: Oui, un espace un peu confiné…

: …espaces très, très étroits. C'est… H.

: Ah, je ne savais pas…

: C'est ça qui a, enfin, décidé le style de la ville. C'est intéressant, ça. H.

: Ah, oui, ça c'est intéressant. Je ne savais pas ça.

: Et puis c'est une ville où, pendant très longtemps, il n'y avait que des marins, des gens qui sont venus chercher de l'or. Il y a avait donc… les gens ne faisaient que…il n'y avait que de la prostitution, l'alcool, le… le jeu, etcetera… C'était une ville, comment dirais-je, sauvage. Pendant très longtemps. Et puis, finalement, il y a des gens qui ont… se sont… enfin, ils ont gagné beaucoup d'argent et puis c'est de là qu'est venu, donc je crois, la culture; le mécénat, etcetera, tout ce qu'on a vu à Vancouver… pardon, à San Francisco avec… avec les universités qu'il y a autour, etcetera. H.

: Oui, oui.

C'est vrai que… il y a… il y a… J'ai entendu dire que, oui, San Francisco, la population était assez… assez riche là-bas. Il y a énormément de… d'entreprises de haute technologie qui ont… qui ont démarré là-bas. Il y a Google, je crois, qui est installée là-bas. Il y a énormément de… d'entreprises qui sont très, très prospères qui sont à San Francisco. Et je crois aussi qu'il y a beaucoup d'entreprises qui s'installent là-bas pour attirer… pour attirer des… comment dire, des… des gens… des futurs… des futurs employés parce que la ville est extrêmement plaisante. Ça fait partie un petit peu d'une stratégie… Si on s'installe à San Francisco comme c'est une ville qui a une réputation assez… aux Etats-Unis, en tous cas, très, très positive. Beaucoup de gens viennent s'installer là-bas et c'est… S.

: C'est intéressant parce que c'est comme… c'est un peu comme la ville de Boston, par exemple, et d'autres où il y a beaucoup d'universités. Donc… mais il y a beaucoup de nouvelles vagues qui ont commencé à San Francisco. On a eu, d'abord, les Beatniks dans les années cinquante, on a eu les Hippies dans les années soixante… Et si on pense à San Francisco, il faut penser à toute la région. Donc, on a, jusqu'à San Jose, qui est le centre de… de Silicon Valley, comment… je ne sais pas comment on dit en France… H.

: Si, on dit aussi Silicon Valley.

: Silicon Valley. Un peu au Nord, on a la région des vins, donc, il y a pas mal de choses pour attirer le monde.

: Oui, oui.

: Sauf que… Il parait que, pendant l'Été là, il fait plus beau à Vancouver qu'à San Francisco. Parce que, ici, à Vancouver, l'Été est très ensoleillé alors qu'à San Francisco on dit que… il y a le brouillard qui s'installe au mois de, je ne sais pas, Juillet, et que là-bas, c'est entre Septembre et Novembre que… qu'il fait le plus beau. H.

: Oui, oui, c'est… J'avais entendu la même chose, c'est possible. On n'y est pas… on n'est pas sur… peut-être qu'on reviendra à San Francisco pour vérifier. S.

: Oui.

: Qui sait? Mais, oui, j'avais aussi entendu ça. J'avais aussi entendu dire que c'était… qu'au niveau du climat c'était extrêmement tempéré. Il n'y a pas de… les températures descendent… taquinent vaguement le zéro mais desc… ne montent pas au dessus de vingt-cinq. S.

: Oui.

: Donc, c'est vrai que c'est… c'est une ville, à mon avis, où il fait très, très bon vivre. On n'a pas beaucoup trop d'extrêmes. S.

: Mais, il parait qu'il y a un courrant, donc, dans l'océan qui… donc… qui… comment dirais-je… qui tempère un peu le climat et il est… J'ai des amis qui viennent de San Francisco qui me disent qu'ils ne peuvent pas se baigner dans l'océan là, alors qu'ici ils le font. Alors, ici, l'Été, je me baigne dans l'océan, il fait di… ce n'est pas… ce n'est pas la Méditerranée mais, enfin… c'est dix-sept à dix-neuf… H.

: C'est supportable. S.

: … c'est supportable, et là-bas, il fait encore plus froid. Enfin, l'eau. Parce qu'il y a des courants, il y a les différents courants dans le Pacifique. Donc, parait-il, enfin, je ne sais pas…

: Oui, oui.

C'est… ce n'est pas impossible. Et aussi, pour parler… pour revenir sur l'histoire de San Francisco, j'avais entendu dire que la ville, aussi, s'était beaucoup développée grâce à sa situation géographique un peu unique qui était… qui la rendait très facile à… qui rendait la baie très facile à défendre. Près du Lion Gates Bridge, il y a, comment ça s'appelle… S.

: Golden Gate!

: … du Golden Gate Bridge, pardon. Il y a le… un endroit qui s'appelle Fort Point qui est un petit fort qui, justement, gardait la baie. Et il y avait deux autres points intéressants dont Alcatraz et, apparemment, pour des envahisseurs, essayer d'attaquer la baie de San Francisco c'était un véritable suicide car c'était extrêmement dur de pénétrer dans la baie. Il fallait passer entre le feu de deux forts et, derrière, si on arrivait à passer, il y avait encore Alcatraz qui accueillait à coups de canons et que… Justement, ça a fait que c'est devenu une base très importante notamment dans... pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale apparemment c'était la seule… un endroit…pendant la guerre… Deuxième Guerre Mondiale! Pendant la guerre de Sécession , c'était un endroit… un endroit vraiment clé. Et je crois que le port de San Francisco ne s'est jamais fait attaqué parce qu'il aurait fallu des flottille absolument gigantesques pour venir à bout de ses défenses. S.

: C'est intéressant, je… puisque j'ai lu ce livre sur l'histoire de San Francisco, il parait que, et les Espagnols et les Anglais ont mis beaucoup de temps à découvrir, justement, la baie de San Francisco. Ils ont découvert la baie de Monterrey. D'abord, il y a Francis Drake qui l'a découvert, puis il y a l'Espagnol dont je ne rappelle plus le nom. Alors… Mais c'est beaucoup moins protégé que la baie à San Francisco. Et puis, ce n'est pas très, très ouvert la… la bouche là pour… Donc, les ge… avec les… les bateaux, là, ils passaient vers le Sud, vers le Nord, ils ne voyaient pas, donc, pendant très longtemps ça n'a pas été découvert. Enfin, bien sur, il y avait des autochtones qui vivaient là et qui l'avaient bien découvert mais, enfin. Les européens, ils ont mis pas mal de temps à découvrir cet… ce port naturel fantastique.

: Oui, c'est vrai que la situation géographique est assez exceptionnelle. Puis, quand on regarde, par exemple, le Golden Gate qui est très, très…

: Qui est splendide d'ailleurs. H.

: Qui est absolument magnifique. Il y a… il y a… il est quand même… Malgré tout, il n'est pas si immense que ça. Je comprends qu'on… ils soient passés à côté parce que c'est vrai que c'est… ce n'est pas si grand que ça. Si jamais ils ont pu faire passer le pont, c'est que la baie… l'ouverture de la baie n'est quand même pas si immense. Il y a un autre pont d'ailleurs, à San Francisco, juste à côté, que j'ai trouvé… Je ne me souviens plus du nom… S.

: Bay Bridge.

Et, pour comparer au Golden Gate, j'ai trouvé que le Bay Bridge, de nuit, était beaucoup plus beau. Parce qu'il est beaucoup plus illuminé. Le Golden Gate n'est pas… il y a quelques… quelques lampes, quelques petites ampoules rouge positionnées sur le pont mais il n'y a pas grand-chose. Par contre, je trouve que le Bay Bridge est beaucoup plus joli de nuit.

: Ça me rappelle. J'ai vu un catamaran Français… H.

: Ah?

: … dans la baie de San Francisco. Et… et j'étais, mais alors, très surpris de voir la vitesse que ça… que ça… à laquelle ça marche, enfin, ça… H.

: Ah oui, c'est… S.

: Comment dirais-je?

: Ça file sur…

: Ça file! Mais c'est vite. C'est comme un… il y avait des… des petits bateaux à moteur qui… qui n'arrivaient pas à suivre. C'était impressionnant. C'était l'équipe, je ne sais pas quoi… Je ne sais pas. Enfin, il y avait le drapeau Français, puis il y avait… J'ai pris une photo. H.

: Oui, oui, oui. Parce que j'ai vu… quand j'y avais été, oui, il y avait beaucoup de voiliers et de gens qui font de la voile dans la baie. C'est… c'est assez… assez impressionnant. S.

: Oui.

: Je pense que ça doit être un endroit privilégié parce que, effectivement, c'est un peu protégé et… S.

: Et puis il y a… il y a…

: Il y a énormément de marinas.

: Et puis il y a tout le port là, co… enfin, commerçant enfin, tous… tous les chantiers là des… pour les containers etcetera… C'est… c'est énorme. Donc, il y a de tout. Il y a de la culture, il y a bien sur le commerce, il y a…

: Business…

: … business, surtout le…

: Industries…

: … les secteurs de… comment dirais-je, les secteur de…

: De pointe, oui.

: … de pointe, etcetera… Donc, c'est une ville très intéressante avec aussi ce… ce côté moins… comment dirais-je… moins joyeux. Il y a quand même pas mal de… de gens sans abris.

: Oui, moi aussi, ça m'a choqué… S.

: Je ne sais pas si c'est plus par tête d'habitant qu'à Vancouver mais c'était tout autour de mon hôtel. Enfin, les gens, ils ne sont pas méchants mais… ce n'est pas, disons, ça… H.

: Oui, oui.

Il y a des… des en… Bien, j'avais entendu dire, oui, qu'il y avait quelques quartiers à éviter, bien, notamment du côté de Market Street, c'est ça? S.

: Oui, c'est là où était mon hôtel. H.

: C'est… Et… Oui bien, j'imagine aussi que c'est dû au fait que le climat… le climat est plus doux. Par exemple, à Vancouver, il y a énormément de sans… de sans-abris. Dû… c'est dû au fait que le reste du Canada est très froid et que donc, en Hiver, ils viennent tous se réfugier à Vancouver qui est beaucoup plus clément. Donc, je pense qu'il y a peut-être le même phénomène aussi à San Francisco. S.

: Oui.

: Et qui reviennent à la maison…

: … font du travail physique. Ils viennent passer le… enfin, leur congé, là, ils boivent… boivent tout… tout l'argent qu'ils ont gagné et puis après dix ans ils sont finis comme… enfin. Ça, par le passé, c'était la raison pour laquelle il y avait quand même pas mal de ce genre de personnes. Aujourd'hui, enfin, il y a la drogue, il y a les problèmes avec les autochtones. Là… à San Francisco, il y a quand même pas mal de… de noirs qui… qui font parti de… pas exclusivement mais, enfin, proportionnellement…

: Oui, j'ai entendu dire que dans les quartiers du… du Sud-Ouest, il y avait pas mal de… de gangs. S.

: Oui.

: Ils recommandaient, dans le guide touristique et qu'ils recommandaient de faire très attention de ne pas porter des vêtement rouges ou bleus trop voyants car ils… S.

: C'est quels quartiers? H.

: Je ne me souviens plus, c'était au Sud-Ouest. S.

: Ah, oui.

: Donc…

: Mais, globalement, c'est vrai que c'est une ville très sympathique, très diverse. S.

: C'est ça. C'est la diversité. Comme, je crois, de plus en plus dans chaque ville au monde, là, maintenant. On voit de plus en plus de diversité mais, pour moi, ç'a été… c'était, un mot là que je me disais souvent, c'est « spectaculaire ». H.

: Oui.

: San Francisco, c'est spectaculaire. H.
