日 の 光 が とっぷり と 隠れて しまって 、往来 の 灯 ばかり が 足もと の たより と なる ころ 、葉子 は 熱病 患者 の ように 濁りきった 頭 を もてあまして 、車 に 揺られる たびごとに 眉 を 痛々しく しかめ ながら 、釘店 に 帰って 来た 。 ・・

玄関 に は いろいろの 足駄 や 靴 が ならべて あった が 、流行 を 作ろう 、少なくとも 流行 に 遅れ まい と いう はなやかな 心 を 誇る らしい 履物 と いって は 一つ も 見当たらなかった 。 自分 の 草履 を 始末 し ながら 、葉子 は すぐに 二階 の 客間 の 模様 を 想像 して 、自分 の ため に 親戚 や 知人 が 寄って 別れ を 惜しむ という その 席 に 顔 を 出す のが 、自分自身 を ばかに しきった こと の ように しか 思わ れなかった 。 こんな くらい なら 定子 の 所 に でも いる ほうが よほど ましだった 。 こんな 事 の ある はずだった のを どうして また 忘れて いた もの だろう 。 どこ に いる の も いやだ 。 木部 の 家 を 出て 、二度と は 帰る まい と 決心 した 時 の ような 心持ち で 、拾い かけた 草履 を たたき に 戻そう と した その 途端 に 、・・
