L'intesa fu facile. Eleonora, la mattina dopo, parlò maternamente a Gerlando: lo lasciò padrone di tutto, libero di fare quel che gli sarebbe piaciuto, come se tra loro non ci fosse alcun vincolo. Per sé domandò solo d'esser lasciata lì, da canto, in quella cameretta, insieme con la vecchia serva di casa, che l'aveva vista nascere. Gerlando, che a notte inoltrata s'era tratto dal balcone tutto indurito dall'umido a dormire sul divano della sala da pranzo, ora, così sorpreso nel sonno, con una gran voglia di stropicciarsi gli occhi coi pugni, aprendo la bocca per lo sforzo d'aggrottar le ciglia, perché voleva mostrare non tanto di capire, quanto d'esser convinto, disse a tutto di sì, di sì, col capo. Ma il padre e la madre, quando seppero di quel patto, montarono su tutte le furie, e invano Gerlando si provò a far intender loro che gli conveniva così, che anzi ne era più che contento.

Per quietare in certo qual modo il padre, dovette promettere formalmente che, ai primi d'ottobre, sarebbe ritornato a scuola. Ma, per ripicco, la madre gl'impose di scegliersi la camera più bella per dormire, la camera più bella per studiare, la camera più bella per mangiare… tutte le camere più belle! - E comanda tu, a bacchetta, sai! Se no, vengo io a farti ubbidire e rispettare.

Giurò infine che non avrebbe mai più rivolto la parola a quella smorfiosa che le disprezzava così il figlio, un così bel pezzo di giovanotto, che colei non era neanco degna di guardare.

Da quel giorno stesso, Gerlando si mise a studiare, a riprendere la preparazione interrotta per gli esami di riparazione. Era già tardi, veramente: aveva appena ventiquattro giorni innanzi a sé; ma, chi sa! mettendoci un po' d'impegno, forse sarebbe riuscito a prendere finalmente quella licenza tecnica, per cui si torturava da tre anni. Scosso lo sbalordimento angoscioso dei primi giorni, Eleonora, per consiglio della vecchia serva, si diede a preparare il corredino per il nascituro.

Non ci aveva pensato, e ne pianse.

Gesa, la vecchia serva, la ajutò, la guidò in quel lavoro, per cui era inesperta: le diede la misura per le prime camicine, per le prime cuffiette… Ah, la sorte le serbava questa consolazione, e lei non ci aveva ancora pensato; avrebbe avuto un piccino, una piccina a cui attendere, a cui consacrarsi tutta! Ma Dio doveva farle la grazia di mandarle un maschietto. Era già vecchia, sarebbe morta presto, e come avrebbe lasciato a quel padre una femminuccia, a cui lei avrebbe ispirato i suoi pensieri, i suoi sentimenti? Un maschietto avrebbe sofferto meno di quella condizione d'esistenza, in cui fra poco la mala sorte lo avrebbe messo. Angosciata da questi pensieri, stanca del lavoro, per distrarsi, prendeva in mano uno di quei libri che l'altra volta s'era fatti spedire dal fratello, e si metteva a leggere. Ogni tanto, accennando col capo, domandava alla serva:

- Che fa?

Gesa si stringeva nelle spalle, sporgeva il labbro, poi rispondeva:

- Uhm! Sta con la testa sul libro. Dorme? Pensa? Chi sa!

Pensava, Gerlando: pensava che, tirate le somme, non era molto allegra la sua vita.

Ecco qua: aveva il podere, ed era come se non lo avesse; la moglie, e come se non l'avesse; in guerra coi parenti; arrabbiato con se stesso, che non riusciva a ritener nulla, nulla, nulla di quanto studiava. E in quell'ozio smanioso, intanto, si sentiva dentro come un fermento d'acri desiderii; fra gli altri, quello della moglie, perché gli s'era negata. Non era più desiderabile, è vero, quella donna. Ma… che patto era quello? Egli era il marito, e doveva dirlo lui, se mai.

Si alzava; usciva dalla stanza; passava innanzi all'uscio della camera di lei; ma subito, intravedendola, sentiva cadersi ogni proposito di ribellione. Sbuffava e, tanto per non riconoscere che sul punto gliene mancava l'animo, diceva a se stesso che non ne valeva la pena. Uno di quei giorni, finalmente tornò dalla città sconfitto, bocciato, bocciato ancora una volta agli esami di licenza tecnica. E ora basta! basta davvero! Non voleva più saperne! Prese libri, quaderni, disegni, squadre, astucci, matite e li portò giù, innanzi alla villa per farne un falò. Il padre accorse per impedirglielo; ma Gerlando, imbestialito, si ribellò:

- Lasciatemi fare! Sono il padrone!

Sopravvenne la madre; accorsero anche alcuni contadini che lavoravano nella campagna. Una fumicaja prima rada, poi a mano a mano più densa si sprigionò, tra le grida degli astanti, da quel mucchio di carte; poi un bagliore; poi crepitò la fiamma e si levò. Alle grida, si fecero al balcone Eleonora e la serva.

Gerlando, livido e gonfio come un tacchino, scagliava alle fiamme, scamiciato, furibondo, gli ultimi libri che teneva sotto il braccio, gli strumenti della sua lunga inutile tortura.

Eleonora si tenne a stento di ridere, a quello spettacolo, e si ritrasse in fretta dal balcone. Ma la suocera se ne accorse e disse al figlio:

- Ci prova gusto, sai? la signora; la fai ridere.

- Piangerà! - gridò allora Gerlando, minaccioso, levando il capo verso il balcone.

Eleonora intese la minaccia e impallidí: comprese che la stanca e mesta quiete, di cui aveva goduto finora, era finita per lei. Nient'altro che un momento di tregua le aveva concesso la sorte. Ma che poteva voler da lei quel bruto? Ella era già esausta: un altro colpo, anche lieve, l'avrebbe atterrata. Poco dopo, si vide innanzi Gerlando, fosco e ansante.

- Si cangia vita da oggi! - le annunziò. - Mi son seccato. Mi metto a fare il contadino, come mio padre; e dunque tu smetterai di far la signora costà. Via, via tutta codesta biancheria! Chi nascerà sarà contadino anche lui, e dunque senza tanti lisci e tante gale. Licenzia la serva: farai tu da mangiare e baderai alla casa, come fa mia madre. Inteso?

Eleonora si levò, pallida e vibrante di sdegno:

- Tua madre è tua madre, - gli disse, guardandolo fieramente negli occhi. - Io sono io, e non posso diventare con te, villano, villana.

- Mia moglie sei! - gridò allora Gerlando, appressandosi violento e afferrandola per un braccio. - E farai ciò che voglio io; qua comando io, capisci?

Poi si volse alla vecchia serva e le indicò l'uscio: - Via! Voi andate subito via! Non voglio serve per la casa!

- Vengo con te, Gesa! - gridò Eleonora cercando di svincolare il braccio che egli le teneva ancora afferrato.

Ma Gerlando non glielo lasciò; glielo strinse più forte; la costrinse a sedere.

- No! Qua! Tu rimani qua, alla catena, con me! Io per te mi son prese le beffe: ora basta! Vieni via, esci da codesto tuo covo. Non voglio star più solo a piangere la mia pena. Fuori!

Fuori!

E la spinse fuori della camera.

- E che hai tu pianto finora? - gli disse lei con le lagrime a gli occhi. - Che ho preteso, io da te?

- Che hai preteso? Di non aver molestie, di non aver contatto con me, quasi che io fossi… che non meritassi confidenza da te, matrona! E m'hai fatto servire a tavola da una salariata, mentre toccava a te a servirmi, di tutto punto, come fanno le mogli. - Ma che n'hai da fare tu, di me? - gli domandò, avvilita, Eleonora. - Ti servirò, se vuoi, con le mie mani, d'ora in poi. Va bene?

Ruppe, così dicendo, in singhiozzi, poi sentí mancarsi le gambe e s'abbandonò. Gerlando, smarrito, confuso, la sostenne insieme con Gesa, e tutt'e due la adagiarono su una seggiola. Verso sera, improvvisamente, fu presa dalle doglie. Gerlando, pentito, spaventato, corse a chiamar la madre: un garzone fu spedito in città per una levatrice; mentre il mezzadro, vedendo già in pericolo il podere, se la nuora abortiva, bistrattava il figlio:

- Bestione, bestione, che hai fatto? E se ti muore, adesso? Se non hai più figli? Sei in mezzo a una strada! Che farai? Hai lasciato la scuola e non sai neppur tenere la zappa in mano. Sei rovinato!

- Che me ne importa? - gridò Gerlando. - Purché non abbia nulla lei!

Sopravvenne la madre, con le braccia per aria:

- Un medico! Ci vuole subito un medico! La vedo male!

- Che ha? - domandò Gerlando, allibito.

Ma il padre lo spinse fuori:

- Corri! Corri!

Per via, Gerlando, tutto tremante, s'avvilì, si mise a piangere, sforzandosi tuttavia di correre. A mezza strada s'imbatté nella levatrice che veniva in vettura col garzone. - Caccia! caccia! - gridò. - Vado pel medico, muore!

Inciampò, stramazzò; tutto impolverato, riprese a correre, disperatamente, addentandosi la mano che s'era scorticata. Quando tornò col medico alla villa, Eleonora stava per morire, dissanguata.

- Assassino! assassino! - nicchiava Gesa, attendendo alla padrona. - Lui è stato! Ha osato di metterle le mani addosso.

Eleonora però negava col capo. Si sentiva a mano a mano, col sangue, mancar la vita, a mano a mano le forze raffievolendo scemare; era già fredda… Ebbene: non si doleva di morire; era pur dolce così la morte, un gran sollievo, dopo le atroci sofferenze. E, col volto come di cera, guardando il soffitto, aspettava che gli occhi le si chiudessero da sé, pian piano, per sempre. Già non distingueva più nulla. Come in sogno rivide il vecchio medico che le aveva fatto da testimonio; e gli sorrise.
