È quasi una settimana che non scrivo in questo mio caro giornalino. Sfido! Come avrei potuto farlo con la clavicola spostata e il braccio sinistro ingessato?

Ma oggi finalmente il dottore mi ha tolto l'apparecchio, e alla meglio posso descrivere qui, dove confido tutti i miei pensieri e tutti i casi della mia vita, la tremenda avventura che mi successe il 18 dicembre, data memorabile per me perché fu un vero miracolo che non segnasse l'ultimo giorno della mia vita. Quella mattina, dunque, appena Cecchino Bellucci venne a sedermi accanto in scuola, lo trattai di vigliacco perché era scappato in automobile per paura della lezione che gli avevo promesso.

Lui allora mi spiegò che in questi giorni essendo i suoi genitori a Napoli per la malattia di suo nonno, che sarebbe il babbo della sua mamma, era stato accolto in casa del suo zio Gaspero il quale lo mandava a prendere a scuola tutti i giorni con l'automobile per lo scioffèr, e che perciò non poteva trovarsi a solo a solo con me, almeno per un certo tempo. Dietro queste spiegazioni mi calmai, e ci mettemmo a discorrere dell'automobile che è una cosa che mi interessa assai; e il Bellucci mi spiegò tutto il meccanismo, dicendomi che lui lo conosce benissimo e ci sa andare anche solo e ci è andato più d'una volta, perché basta saper girare il manubrio e stare attenti alle voltate, anche un ragazzo lo sa manovrare. Io veramente ci credevo poco, perché mi pareva impossibile che lasciassero l'automobile nelle mani a un ragazzetto come Cecchino Bellucci. Il mal augurio si avverò anche troppo presto, e se non ci si ruppe proprio l'osso del collo, andaron rotte altre ossa non meno utili. Io ricordo appena che a un certo punto vidi dinanzi a me sorgere a un tratto dalla terra come un grande fantasma bianco che si riversasse sull'automobile... e poi più nulla. Dopo ho saputo che a una svoltata della strada eravamo andati contro una casa, che la violenza dell'urto era stata tale, che io e Cecchino avevamo fatto un volo per aria di una trentina di metri e che nella disgrazia avevamo avuto la fortuna di cascare dentro una macchia che ci servì come di una molla, attutendo il colpo della caduta, in modo che non fu - come poteva essere - mortale.
