Oggi è il giorno dei morti e si va al Camposanto a visitare la tomba dei poveri nonni e quella del povero zio Bartolommeo che morì due anni or sono, purtroppo, e che se fosse campato m'avrebbe regalato una bella bicicletta che m'aveva promesso tante volte... La mamma mi ha detto di vestirmi alla svelta, e che in questa circostanza solenne, se mi porterò bene, il babbo forse rifarà la pace con me.

Meno male! Finalmente la giustizia trionfa, e l'innocente non è più perseguitato da chi dovrebbe invece capir la ragione, senza dar sempre addosso al più piccino perché non si può difendere. Prima di andare a letto voglio registrare qui, nel mio caro giornalino, il fatto d'oggi che è stato quello di essere stato perdonato dal babbo; però c'è mancato poco che tutto andasse all'aria, e anche questa volta proprio per una sciocchezza. Oggi, dunque, prima d'uscir di casa, il babbo mi ha consegnato una corona di fiori e mi ha detto dandomi del voi, con quella voce grave che fa sempre quando è stato adirato con me e che, dopo un pezzo, si decide a ridiscorrere: - Speriamo che il pensiero dei poveri nostri nonni vi ispirino a diventar migliore di quel che siete...

Io, naturalmente, non ho fiatato, ben sapendo che in queste circostanze ai ragazzi è proibito di dir liberamente le loro ragioni: ho chinato la testa come si fa quando si diventa rossi, e ho guardato di sotto in su il babbo, che mi fissava con tanto di cipiglio.

Intanto la mamma ci ha chiamati, perché la carrozza che aveva mandato a prendere per Caterina era pronta, e ci siamo montati tutti, meno la Virginia che è rimasta in casa, perché doveva venire il dottore dall'avvocato Maralli che va sempre migliorando. Io ho detto alla mamma:

- Se permetti vado a cassetta, così ci state più comodi.

E così ho fatto, anche perché a cassetta mi diverto molto di più, specialmente quando si piglia la carrozza a ore, perché allora si va piano e il fiaccheraio mi lascia anche tener le guide.

- Che bella giornata! - ha detto l'Ada. - E quanta gente!...

Infatti quando siamo entrati nel Camposanto pareva d'essere al passeggio ed era un bel colpo d'occhio il vedere tutte quelle famiglie che formicolavano nei viali cariche di fiori variopinti per i loro poveri defunti. Abbiamo visitato le tombe dei poveri nonni e del povero zio, e pregato per loro come si fa tutti gli anni, e poi si è fatto il giro del Camposanto per vedere le nuove tombe.

A un certo punto ci siamo fermati a una tomba in costruzione e l'Ada ha detto: - Ecco la cappella della famiglia Rossi della quale discorre tanto la Bice...

- Che lusso! - ha osservato la mamma - quanto costerà?

- Tre o quattromila lire di certo! - ha risposto il babbo.

A un tratto mi son sentito pigliar per il goletto. Era il babbo tutto infuriato perché, a quanto pare, mi cercava da un pezzo con la mamma e l'Ada. - Proprio non c'è nulla di sacro per te! - mi ha detto con voce severa. - Anche qui, dove si viene per piangere, trovi il modo di far delle birichinate!...

- Vergogna! - ha soggiunto Ada dandosi una grande aria di superiorità - mettersi a fare il chiasso in Camposanto!...

Allora io mi son ribellato e le ho detto:

- Ho fatto il chiasso con Carluccio e Renzo perché son piccino e voglio bene ai miei amici anche nel Camposanto, mentre invece ci sono le ragazze grandi che vengono qui a dir male delle loro amiche!...

Il babbo ha fatto una mossa come per picchiarmi, ma l'Ada l'ha fermato e ho sentito che ha borbottato: - Lascialo stare, per carità... Sarebbe capace d'andare a ridirlo a Bice! Ecco come sono le sorelle maggiori! Esse difendono qualche volta i loro fratelli minori, ma sempre per interesse e contro il trionfo della verità e della giustizia!

Credevo che la bufera scoppiasse poi a casa, ma una grande novità che abbiamo trovato al nostro arrivo ha dissipato ogni malumore.

Virginia ci è venuta incontro, ridendo e piangendo nello stesso tempo, e ci ha raccontato che il dottore aveva trovato l'avvocato Maralli molto migliorato e che ormai poteva garantire non soltanto la prossima guarigione, ma anche che non avrebbe altrimenti perduto l'occhio che fino ad ora aveva creduto in pericolo. È impossibile ripetere la contentezza prodotta in noi da una sì grata e inaspettata notizia.

Io ho avuto molto piacere, anche perché tutto questo dimostra che in fondo quelle che chiamano le mie birbonate sono vere inezie, e che sarebbe ora di finirla con le esagerazioni e le persecuzioni!
