"Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca" di Vamba, 14 febbraio

Ho appena il tempo di segnare qui in stile telegrafico gli avvenimenti di ieri. Nel critico momento che attraversiamo se questo mio giornalino cadesse nelle grinfie della Direttrice sarebbe una rovina per tutti... Perciò l'ho levato dalla mia valigia e lo tengo legato sul petto con uno spago e vorrei vedere chi avesse l'ardire di venirmelo a cercare! Ecco dunque quel che è successo in queste ventiquattr'ore. Ieri fin dalla prima mattina in tutto il collegio ci fu un gran movimento e un gran chiacchierare sottovoce, ed anche un estraneo avrebbe capito subito che qualcosa di straordinario doveva essere avvenuto.

Si era sparsa la notizia della fuga di Tito Barozzo e mentre tutti i collegiali commentavano il fatto e andavano a caccia di particolari, i bidelli e gli inservienti dell'Istituto andavano e venivano con certe facce smunte come se avessero perso un terno al lotto e davano in giro certe occhiate torve che parevan proprio poliziotti alla ricerca di qualche bandito. Intanto si diceva che la Direzione aveva diramato telegrammi a destra e a sinistra, avvisando le autorità di tutti i paesi vicini, dando i connotati del fuggiasco, mentre era aperta una severissima inchiesta per stabilire se nella fuga il Barozzo aveva avuto dei complici tra i suoi compagni o nel personale addetto al collegio.

C'era in giro anche la notizia che la Direttrice, appena scoperto il fatto si era ammalata d'un'eruzione nella pelle ed era dovuta tornare a letto e che il Direttore per correre qua e là a dare ordini aveva battuto un occhio in uno spigolo e poi aveva preso una gran flussione sicché aveva la testa tutta rinfagottata in una gran ciarpa di seta nera e aveva un occhio anche più nero... Io e i miei compagni della Società segreta sapevamo il motivo di queste eruzioni e di queste flussioni, ma stavamo naturalmente zitti e cheti, limitandoci a scambiare degli sguardi che valevano cento discorsi.

A colazione apparve in refettorio il signor Stanislao e non so come si facesse tutti quanti a non scoppiare in una clamorosa e sonora risata. Si sentiva bensì qua e là qualcuno che malgrado tutti gli sforzi sghignazzava, e si vedeva dovunque un grande affaccendarsi a pulirsi la bocca col tovagliolo per nascondere alla meglio l'ilarità che aveva invaso tutti... Com'era ridicolo, povero signor Stanislao, con quella ciarpona nera avvoltolata intorno alla zucca completamente pulita (noi della Società si sapeva che ormai non poteva più coprirsela con la parrucca ch'era stata buttata in un luogo tale che anche se l'avesse ritrovata, non se la sarebbe rimessa di certo!) e con quell'occhio grosso, languido e lacrimoso come un uovo al tegamino poco cotto... - Pare un becchino turco! - disse piano Maurizio Del Ponte alludendo a quel turbante nero che gli copriva la testa.

Più tardi si seppe che a uno a uno i collegiali erano chiamati in Direzione per subire un interrogatorio.

- Che t'hanno domandato? - chiesi a uno che incontrai nel corridoio grande mentre usciva di Direzione.

- Nulla - mi rispose.

Verso sera ne acchiappai un altro:

- Che t'ha detto il Direttore? - Nulla. Capii allora perfettamente che il signor Stanislao doveva avere nel suoi interrogatori intimiditi i ragazzi in un modo addirittura feroce con chi sa quali minacce se avessero rivelato una parola.

In questa idea mi confermò più tardi Mario Michelozzi, il quale passandomi accanto, mi disse rapidamente:

- All'erta! Calpurnio ha mangiato la foglia! Ma in camerata mi aspettava la terribile rivelazione della nostra completa rovina...

- Sei stato in Direzione? - sussurrai a Gigino Balestra mentre mi passava dinanzi.

- No, - rispose.

Come mai erano stati interrogati tutti i collegiali più piccoli e noi due no?

Questa esclusione mi dava molto da pensare e andai a letto deciso di non avventurarmi nel mio osservatorio, temendo di una vigilanza speciale notturna.

Non so quanto tempo stetti così sveglio, riflettendo sui casi della giornata, architettando deduzioni su deduzioni; ma la tentazione di salire sull'armadietto mi si riaffacciava sempre, ostinata, a traverso a tutte le mie riflessioni, finché da ultimo mi vinse e mi fece abbandonare ogni saggio consiglio di prudenza. Mi assicurai prima se tutti i miei compagni dormivano, ficcai lo sguardo in tutti gli angoli della camerata per vedere se c'era qualche spia messa a vigilare, e alzatomi pian piano salii sul comodino ed entrai nell'armadietto... Oh, sorpresa!... La parete in fondo era murata; murata come era prima ch'io levassi con tanto paziente lavoro il mattone, aprendomi così vasto e interessante campo di osservazione sulla vita privata dei signori Direttori del collegio Pierpaoli! Non so come riuscii a trattenere un grido.

Sgusciai giù dall'armadietto sul comodino e di lì sotto ì lenzuoli... e in mezzo alle ipotesi più strane e fantastiche che mi ballavano vertiginosamente nel cervello, una dominava sulle altre, e ritornava alla mia mente, tenace, implacabile, mostrandomi tutte le probabilità delle quali era armata... - È andata così: - diceva con una terribile sicurezza l'ipotesi trionfatrice di tutte le altre - il signor Stanislao ha sentito ridere te e Gigino Balestra dietro il quadro di Pierpaolo Pierpaoli, e gli è entrato da quel momento un vago sospetto che è andato via via crescendo; e siccome gli ci voleva poco a sincerarsi, stamattina ha preso una scala, l'ha appoggiata alla parete, è salito fino al quadro, l'ha alzato, ha guardato sotto di esso, ha scoperto il finestrino che avevi fatto e... e l'ha fatto murare, dopo essersi assicurato - questo s'intende - dove rispondeva questo finestrino e avere scoperto così che esso corrispondeva proprio nell'armadietto di Giannino Stoppani, detto dai suoi nemici Gian Burrasca ! Ahimé! L'ipotesi, giornalino mio caro, mi pare proprio che colga nel segno e mi aspetto qualche cosa di grosso... Chi sa, dopo queste righe che butto giù alla meglio in questa terribile nottata insonne, quando potrò ancora confidare i miei pensieri e i casi della mia vita alle tue pagine?
