L'ambiente familiare in cui crebbe Bruce era stimolante e relativamente privilegiato, ma questo veniva largamente reso vano dalla condizione di Hong Kong stessa, città enorme e caotica che nel dopoguerra attraversò periodi molto bui. L'immigrazione di larghe masse di popolazione che tentavano di sfuggire alla Cina comunista e l'instaurarsi di una violenta criminalità animata da gang rivali facevano di Hong Kong un posto molto pericoloso. Sebbene i presupposti di Bruce lasciavano presagire un'educazione raffinata, la natura violenta del ragazzo venne alimentata dall'ambiente circostante, e in breve Bruce divenne un giovane attaccabrighe.

Pare che il ragazzino fosse estremamente propenso a far parte di alcune delle numerose bande di adolescenti che mettevano a ferro e fuoco Hong Kong. Lui stesso, in una intervista, dichiarò che allora “non perdevo occasione per attaccar briga”. Combatteva con catene e penne che nascondevano lame, e pare che non di rado l'avesse vinta nonostante la giovanissima età.

La carriera d'incallito criminale verso cui si stava ingloriosamente avviando venne per fortuna sventata dal padre, che comprese come l'unico modo per ricondurre il figlio all'ordine fosse quello di incanalare tanta violenza in un'attività disciplinata.

Lo studio delle arti marziali, vera arte nazionale in Cina, segnò la svolta per Bruce e gettò nuove fondamenta per la sua vita futura: luminosa, anzi accecante. Questo è vero anche se, come vedremo, nella concezione personalissima che ebbe Bruce Lee del kung fu, la tradizione cede il passo alla necessità e all'urgenza di una difesa efficace, del tutto priva di orpelli e consuetudini. Le nozioni che apprese da quel momento vennero da lui presto profondamente rielaborate, a partire da un bisogno nato evidentemente tra i maleodoranti vicoli della sua città. La sua personalissima declinazione del kung fu sarebbe stata infatti quella di un'arte marziale da strada, perfetta per l'autodifesa, e quasi “forgiata” dal pericolo di un'esistenza a contatto con criminali spietati.

Inizialmente fu il padre stesso a impartirgli le prime nozioni dell'arte che egli stesso praticava, non il kung fu bensì il tai chi chuan. Il tai chi (come è comunemente detto) è quell'arte che oggi in Occidente conosciamo soprattutto come elegante forma di movimento corporeo, un insieme armonioso di figure che a volte vediamo eseguire da atleti solitari o da piccoli gruppi di persone nei parchi delle nostre città. Non di rado i praticanti hanno i capelli bianchi e, in chi ignora del tutto questa tradizione, si insinua il rischioso dubbio di bollare il tai chi chuan come un esercizio specifico per la terza età. Niente di più falso. Questo fraintendimento dipende dal fatto che nelle forme moderne del tai chi, l'accento è stato posto erroneamente sul rilassamento e sulla coreografia, supportata magari da suggestive immagini mentali di impronta new age, mentre l'aspetto marziale viene sistematicamente trascurato. Il tai chi chuan è in realtà una vera e propria filosofia di vita e, nella sua accezione più completa, anche un'arte marziale tremendamente efficace. È oggi profondamente incompreso in Occidente, e del tutto snaturato, dal momento che viene sistematicamente privato della sua essenza marziale.

Una conoscenza meticolosa dell'organismo umano che sia in grado di disattivare i punti vitali dell'avversario (mandando letteralmente in tilt il suo corpo) è forse l'attributo principale del tai chi chuan. Il fatto che poi questi punti vitali vengano contestualmente attivati nell'organismo di chi lo pratica è un fatto semplicemente e naturalmente complementare, secondo le ben note leggi dello yin e dello yang.

Bruce ebbe modo di studiare seriamente le arti marziali solo a partire dai 13 anni di età, quando cominciò a praticare il wing chun. Si tratta di una forma di kung fu estremamente efficace, una delle sue varianti più aggressive. Il principio fondamentale del wing chun – che tanto influenzerà l'approccio di Bruce allo sviluppo di un'arte personale – è quello della massima economia. Il corpo viene concettualmente attraversato da una linea verticale, che lo divide simmetricamente, e lungo questa linea si concentrano le maggiori attenzioni degli attacchi. Un altro principio fondamentale è quello della linea retta, cioè del percorso che il pugno o il calcio devono compiere per colpire l'avversario: non esistono infatti colpi curvilinei, semplicemente perché essi fanno perdere tempo ed energia. La gran parte degli attacchi sono portati con le mani, mentre i calci sono per lo più bassi, per una tecnica generale molto concreta e priva di orpelli spettacolari.

L'insegnante di Bruce fu Yip Man, un maestro molto famoso che gli diede lezioni dal 1954 fino all'aprile 1959, mese in cui Bruce andò via da Hong Kong. L'abnegazione di Bruce era già allora leggendaria: si esercitò moltissimo, più di qualunque altro allievo. Si racconta anche che una volta, pur di ricevere una lezione personale dal maestro Yip, sviò tutti gli altri compagni di corso, facendosi trovare sulla scala di accesso al dojo e dichiarando candidamente che la lezione era stata annullata.

Grazie a Yip Man, Bruce conobbe la disciplina e lo studio meticoloso, supportato anche da quell'eterno “sparring partner” che fu l'uomo di legno, il più fido compagno di allenamento di tutta una vita, di cui progetterà egli stesso numerose varianti.

Tuttavia, nonostante i grandi progressi, Bruce dovette conoscere anche la discriminazione proprio nella classe di Yip Man. Il fatto che nelle sue vene scorresse anche sangue non cinese – come abbiamo detto da parte di madre – lo fece infatti considerare come uno straniero e un impuro da molti dei suoi compagni di allenamento. Essi, secondo tradizione, ritenevano sacrilego insegnare i segreti delle arti marziali cinesi a chi non fosse un cinese puro. Questo causò a Bruce anche non poche difficoltà nel trovare sparring partner in carne e ossa che fossero alla sua altezza. Una questione che, come vedremo, si riproporrà nella sua vita molti anni più tardi e dall'altra parte dell'oceano.

Nel frattempo Bruce pensava anche alla sua educazione. Poco, ma ci pensava. Non pare che sui banchi di scuola fosse particolarmente brillante, stando almeno ai risultati ottenuti al La Salle College, che abbandonò in favore del più conciliante St. Francis Xavier's College, dove, tra le altre cose, ebbe modo di entrare in contatto con la boxe occidentale.

La boxe gli diede anche qualche successo, al punto che nel 1957 conquistò il titolo di campione della scuola. Bruce nutrì una profonda passione per “la nobile arte” per tutta la vita, recandosi agli incontri di boxe negli Stati Uniti (con l'amico Taky Kimura) e studiandone le tecniche, con una vera ossessione per pugni e gioco di gambe.

Per tenersi in forma, l'adolescente Bruce non si limitava a picchiare duro. Prova ne sia il fatto che nel 1958 ottenne il titolo di Crown Colony Cha Cha Champion, ossia di campione di cha cha cha, un riconoscimento di cui andò fiero per tutta la vita e di cui si vantò in molte conversazioni. Bruce riteneva infatti il ballo una delle espressioni più genuine della sua sensualità, un aspetto che non riuscì a esprimere nei suoi film forse per mancanza di tempo o di opportunità.

Bruce era perfettamente consapevole della propria bellezza e sensualità, ed era anche un dongiovanni piuttosto impenitente. Si sentiva portatore di una forte carica erotica, che in qualche modo esprimeva nel cha cha cha.

D'altro canto, il ballo e le arti marziali non sono affatto incompatibili. Molti maestri, anzi, hanno sempre sostenuto che i migliori combattenti erano stati prima dei dotati ballerini.

Qualcosa si agitava dentro di lui. Era una specie di maledizione, proprio come il padre aveva presentito molti anni addietro? Di certo, era qualcosa che non riusciva in alcun modo a trattenere.
