La Nuova Roma (312-325) - Ep. 2 (1)

Salute e salve! Benvenuti alla storia d'Italia.

Dove eravamo rimasti? Costantino ha trionfato a Ponte Milvio e ha portato la sua religione al centro dello stato Romano. In questo episodio vedremo cosa farà Costantino con il supremo potere accumulato nelle sue mani. Ho diviso questo episodio in 3 parti, la prima parlerà di come Costantino finì per impadronirsi di tutto l'impero, per farlo dovrà sconfiggere il suo ultimo nemico, suo cognato Licinio e poi sistemare un po' di affari di famiglia. La seconda parte affronta l'arcana ma fondamentale svolta della storia cristiana che avviene sotto il regno di Costantino. Un nuovo impero cristiano avrà però bisogno di una nuova capitale e nella terza parte Costantino dimostrerà di avere in mente il luogo perfetto.

Episodio 2: la Nuova Roma

Costantino era oramai imperatore unico dell'occidente e suo cognato Licinio non tardò a liberarsi di Massimino Daia, il suo rivale ad oriente. Rimasero quindi solo loro due, cognati e rivali come i loro due illustri predecessori, Antonio e Ottaviano. E proprio come i due triumviri, Costantino e Licinio erano destinati a sfidarsi, solo…non subito. Ci vorranno anni perché il dramma si concluda.

Nel decennio circa che separa la battaglia di Ponte Milvio da quella di Crisopoli, della quale parleremo tra poco, Costantino e Licinio prima sembrarono mantenere una buona collaborazione, come nella stesura dell'editto di Milano, ma presto emersero differenze. Costantino aveva voluto ricreare il titolo di Cesare, forse perché voleva che il titolo passasse al suo primogenito Crispo. Eppure, il Cesare “proposto” da lui per l'oriente fu accusato da Costantino di essere in lega con Licinio per ucciderlo. Da allora le relazioni si raffreddarono molto, fino a quando si scaldarono un bel po', ma nel modo sbagliato, e sfociarono in guerra aperta. Licinio e Costantino si affrontarono in una guerra nel 316-317 dopo cristo, guerra nella quale Costantino vinse tutte le battaglie principali ma che Licinio riuscì a non perdere completamente grazie ad un errore tattico di Costantino, che si fece tagliare fuori dai rifornimenti e dalla sua base di operazioni in occidente. Nel trattato seguente Costantino ottenne le province europee di Licinio – meno la Tracia – e con esse le fondamentali legioni danubiane. Costantino fu inoltre riconosciuto come l'augusto “senior” e superiore tra i due mentre Licinio ottenne bè, di non avere la testa separata dal corpo. Ma Licinio era destinato alla fine a perdere tutto e l'accordo con il quale il suo potere fu diminuito penso che suggellò la faccenda, da quel momento in poi fu solo una questione di tempo.

Ma prima di arrivare allo scontro finale tra i nostri due cognati parliamo un po' della famiglia di Costantino. Sarà un po' tedioso, ma è importante, fidatevi, per il prosieguo della narrazione.

La madre di Costantino era ancora in vita, e lo rimase a lungo. Si tratta della celeberrima Elena, si proprio lei, Sant'Elena che fu la prima vera pellegrina in terra santa. Elena era di estrazione molto umile, pare figlia di un oste. Non è chiaro se fu mai la vera sposa di Costanzo Cloro, che finì per risposarsi con un'altra donna, Teodora. Quel che è certo è che Costantino – che vide spesso il padre come una figura lontana – amò profondamente sua madre che fu quasi sicuramente anche la fonte del suo Cristianesimo. Come detto, sarà proprio Elena a visitare in un celeberrimo pellegrinaggio la terra santa identificando – per quanto possibile a 300 anni di distanza – per la prima volta i siti del martirio e deposizione di Gesù. In una scena sempre commovente del ciclo di affreschi di Piero della Francesca ad Arezzo, dedicato alla leggenda della vera croce. Ricordate? Bè nel ciclo di affreschi è lei, ovviamente, a scoprire la vera croce, secondo la tradizione sepolta nella terra sotto un tempio pagano costruito sul sito della tomba di Gesù. Ovviamente non sappiamo davvero se fosse la croce originaria, ma comunque sia la Vera Croce, come fu conosciuta da allora in poi, divenne immediatamente un simbolo potentissimo dei cristiani. E da allora ebbe una storia piuttosto interessante, fate una ricerca su Google, non ve ne pentirete.

Ma torniamo a Costantino. Questi aveva avuto un figlio di primo letto, il Crispo di cui ho già parlato, da una donna umile che Costantino conobbe quando il nostro era ancora un signor nessuno. Ma con il padre divenuto Tetrarca Costantino aveva pensato bene di risposarsi con una delle figlie dell'augusto Massimiano – ricordate il telespalla bob di Diocleziano? Da lei aveva avuto 3 figli, destinati a diventare tutti e 3 imperatori: Costantino, Costanzo e Costante. No, non è una barzelletta. La sorellastra di Costantino – che ovviamente si chiama Costanza, perché non poteva chiamarsi altrimenti, aveva invece sposato Licinio, il cognato-rivale di Costantino. Chiaro? Bè io ci ho provato.

Negli anni di pace con Licinio, Costantino inviò il suo primogenito Crispo a tenere a bada la frontiera renana, sempre minacciata dai Franchi e dagli Alemanni. Crispo si distinse chiaramente, vincendo una serie di battaglie e dimostrandosi degno delle capacità marziali padre. Era chiaro che Crispo fosse destinato a succedere al padre. Inserite mentalmente una musica lugubre a questo punto, le cose non andranno proprio così.

Licinio nel frattempo decise di abbandonare l'editto di Milano di cui ho parlato la settimana scorsa, forse perché era giunto a considerare la chiesa cristiana come il braccio armato del potere di Costantino, e credo non a torto. Licinio si decise quindi a lanciare di nuovo un regime di persecuzione, uno degli ultimi che dovettero sopportare i Cristiani, prima di restituire il favore ai pagani.

Finalmente nel 324 dopo cristo, dopo anni di pace, Costantino si senti pronto a sfidare il suo rivale orientale. Usò come casus belli il comportamento di Licinio con i cristiani. Certamente una buona scusa per il politico Costantino che si allineava comunque con quella che doveva essere una buona ragione agli occhi del primo imperatore Cristiano.

Costantino marciò contro Licinio alla testa di un'immensa armata di romani e barbari, soprattutto i suoi amati franchi e lo stesso fece suo cognato: è prova di quanto fosse rinvigorito l'impero dai tempi della crisi del terzo secolo che entrambi poterono concentrarsi sulla guerra civile senza avere nessuna paura di un'invasione di Germani o Persiani. I Romani, chiaramente, erano tornati ad essere rispettati e temuti da entrambi. I due eserciti si incontrarono ad Adrianopoli in Tracia – moderna Bulgaria. Ricordatevi di Adrianopoli, non è certamente questa la battaglia più importante combattuta nelle sue vicinanze. Costantino aveva oramai adottato il suo Labarum – lo stendardo con il simbolo cristiano del Chi-Ro – e a quanto pare Licinio ne aveva un timore tra il reverenziale e il superstizioso. Forse fu solo fortuna, o forse Dio davvero era dalla parte di Costantino, ma Licinio fu sconfitto e si ritirò attraversando l'Ellesponto – gli attuali stretti dei Dardanelli – passando in Anatolia. Immagino che il suo calcolo fosse: ho di gran lunga la più grande flotta tra i due, quindi posso ritirarmi in oriente e impedire il passaggio alle legioni occidentali, questo mi darà il tempo di riorganizzarmi e magari passare alla controffensiva.

Povero illuso, Licinio non aveva fatto i conti con il genio militare del figlio di Costantino, Crispo. Questi comandò infatti la flotta Costantiniana negli stretti dei Dardanelli e – un po' come successo ai Greci a Salamina – sfruttò il poco spazio a suo vantaggio, visto che la più grande flotta di Licinio non aveva spazio per manovrare. La battaglia fu vinta da Crispo e poi il resto della flotta di Licinio, per buona misura, fu distrutta da una tempesta. Ecco, a questo punto forse anche io, al posto di Licinio, avrei iniziato a credere che ci fosse un qualche Dio a dare una chiara mano al suo cognato rivale.

Licinio fu sconfitto ancora a Crisopoli, in Asia Minore, e finalmente si arrese a Costantino che gli risparmiò la vita, salvo poi cambiare idea e giustiziare lui e la sua famiglia, compreso suo nipote Liciniano che era stato co-augusto con il padre Licinio. Tenere in vita degli imperatori passati era considerato allora come un'attività che nuoce gravemente alla salute dell'imperatore regnante.

Ma vorrei chiudere questa sezione cercando di chiudere quanto possibile il cerchio dell'allegra famiglia di Costantino, a partire da cosa accadde a Crispo, l'erede apparente del primo imperatore cristiano di Roma. Crispo, come abbiamo visto, aveva la stoffa per succedere a Costantino mentre lo stesso non si può dire a quel tempo dei suoi fratellastri – che ricordiamo si chiamavano Costantino, Costanzo e Costante, e lo ricordiamo perché ci piacciono gli scioglilingua.

Ma qualcuno di voi si chiederà, forse: tutto questo mi sembra strano, non ricordo nessun imperatore Crispo. Il fatto è che Costantino, nel 326 dopo Cristo, per ragioni mai spiegate, fece imprigionare e rapidamente condannò a morte suo figlio. Quel che è ancora più inspiegabile è che di lì a poco Costantino fece anche condannare la moglie Fausta, matrigna di Crispo. Fausta ebbe una fine particolarmente truculenta, fu murata viva in una sauna che fu portata a temperatura letale. Entrambi ebbero una damnatio memoriae, ovvero nessun atto pubblico da lì in poi – e per quanto possibile retroattivamente – porta i loro nomi. Cosa che sembra voler dire che Costantino non li perdonò mai.

Ma di quale colpa imperdonabile e tremenda si erano macchiati figlio e matrigna? Qualcuno crede di un tentativo di assassinio di Costantino, ma semmai gli interessi di entrambi divergevano a riguardo, visto che Fausta avrebbe avuto interesse ad avere Crispo assassinato, per passare il trono ad uno dei suoi figli. Un altro sospetto è che si trattasse di un amore adultero. Questa versione – pur non verificabile in alcun modo – mi pare più probabile, per quanto sospetta visto che ha tutti i tratti del gossip che gli antichi amavano trasmettere. La verità non la sapremo mai, quel che è certo è che è interessante notare come il primo imperatore Cristiano di Roma si sia macchiato di due delitti talmente atroci.

Facciamo ora un passo indietro, torniamo ai tempi poco dopo l'editto di Milano, quando Costantino era solo augusto dell'occidente. Dobbiamo infatti capire l'evoluzione del suo rapporto con la chiesa.

Chiesa che, di fatto, ancora non esisteva: esistevano le chiese, le varie chiese perseguitate che si erano sviluppate nei secoli delle intermittenti persecuzioni pagane. Queste chiese non erano unite nella dottrina e c'erano molte versioni, paradossalmente, dell'unica fede. Fino a quando il Cristianesimo era una religione monoteistica perseguitata le differenze tra i vari credo locali era una preoccupazione relativamente minore, ma una volta che la Cristianità fu portata alla luce, anzi alla preminenza grazie al chiaro sostegno imperiale, iniziarono le dispute. Possiamo anche dire che da allora non sono ancora terminate.

La prima riguardò i Donatisti, una fazione che giudicava inaccettabile avere vescovi e altri membri del clero che si fossero macchiati di tradimento – o di collaborazionismo con le autorità pagane – durante le grandi persecuzioni tetrarchiche. Ovviamente la questione era anche una questione di potere: i vescovi stavano rapidamente diventando delle autorità politiche nel sistema imperiale, decidere chi fosse legittimo o meno era anche una decisione politica.

Furono i Donatisti a chiamare in causa l'imperatore, per dirimere la questione. Pare che si tratti del primo caso in cui l'autorità imperiale fu chiamata a intervenire su faccende ecclesiastiche. Per fortuna che da allora in poi Impero e Chiesa andarono sempre d'amore e d'accordo, come testimonia un millennio abbondante di litigi e perfino guerre tra i due.

Costantino affidò la questione al vescovo di Roma Milziade, che condannò i Donatisti. Ma questi non demorsero e fecero ancora appello a Costantino.

Ora dobbiamo capire che per Costantino la questione era vitale: a lui non interessava probabilmente in alcun modo se i Donatisti avessero ragione oppure no, Costantino aveva una visione politica della fede Cristiana: l'Impero Romano era uno, dio era uno, la fede doveva essere una, unica e unitaria. A decidere cosa fosse accettabile o meno, secondo la visione Costantiniana e direi tipicamente legalistico-romana, doveva essere una procedura legale, una sorta di processo civile. Alla fine della quale tutti, come in un tribunale, si sarebbero adeguati alla decisione. È una visione estremamente romana di una fede monoteistica, immersa nella cultura legale del diritto romano e nella cultura politico-religiosa di Roma, totalmente aliena al dogmatismo delle religioni monoteistiche. Costantino provò per tutta la vita a trovare una forma di compromesso, un credo unico che fosse accettabile a tutti o quasi i vescovi dell'impero.
